Sony Walkman S740 spied in Japan
Sony has a new Walkman S-series device in the chute as demonstrated by this S740 model seen hanging out at the Sony Dealer Convention in Japan. Hard data is scarce but visually we can see a slightly tweaked industrial design with beefier earbuds and a lack of stereo speakers -- at least on the front. Otherwise, we're told that these will ship in 8GB and 16GB capacities.
Update: Looks like a few more images have leaked out -- it must be true, right? Thanks, Glenn!

why would it need stereo speakers?
+1 for the original design
It doesn't need stereo speakers because it's such a great gaming machine.
Speakers are a nice addition for spoken word (podcasts, audiobooks).
They call it a Walkman because you'll walk away and buy a Zune HD.
LOL. That's really funny. :D
great. just when i thought the tide had turned on engadget's hordes of apple trolls, we've come across ZuneHD trolls, trolling about a product that hasn't even come out yet, and doesn't compete in the same market segment.
Chill man, that was actually a funny call. I really DID Laughoutloud!
You know why they call the XBOX 360 the 360? Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away!
(Don't correct me!)
Hey, that was lulzy!
That's not necessary. I am looking at getting the Zune HD, but Sony players are also very good with excellent sound and clear bright screens. There's room for more than one player.
Plus another article already said no worldwide Zune HD(geez MSFT!), Sony players are worldwide as far as I know. This one may be for Japan only though if it has a TV tuner like someone else mentioned, but they could release an international version.
It seems Sony got the memo regarding shiny.
What a waste of screen real estate.
Because you have to be a spy to go to a convention. I would understand these being considered spy shots if they were taken from a secret facility located 45 stories underground in a location that Sony executives do not even speak of among themselves and that is kept in the middle of some ice and snow-filled desert in the north pole and that has genetically-modified standing sharks with lasers around every corner and a load of angry Nazis preserved from the second world war but going to a convention with several tens of thousands of other over weight and non-deodorant using gadget blog writers is not very spy-like. Internet fail. And you know what's the worse part? These just look like the Nano's that Apple released two days ago with a Sony-style face lift and extra bloated firmware with more useless features than the last.
My $300 Sony Walkman cell phone broke in 3 months.
I have a Sony Ericcson (walkman) 810i that I got for less than $100 from ATT in 2005 or 2006. It's still going strong in spite of a great deal of dropping. The back is scratched up from when I accidentally stepped on it on concrete, but the screen is somehow perfect even though it lives in my pocket with my keys.
It does everything I want a cell phone to do, and it's incredibly rugged. I got it because it seemed like the then current version of the Sony Ericcson t610, a phone that was made of metal and as reliable as if it were hewn from solid granite. That thing I got in 2003, for free, from T-Mobile. It was amazingly reliable for years. It still works, though I don't need it. It's in my glove box, with a solar charger, just in case.
I break everything I touch, and yet these Sony Ericcsons have been pretty darn rugged. Most cell phone brands probably make really rugged stuff, except that one with the huge glass screen.
LOL, I can't spell 'Ericsson'
warranty?
Though, I will give Sony the credit that it took them only two days to backward engineer the Nano and be able to make ads for it in only two days time. And yes, I did wake up on the wrong side of the bed today.
wow, they look really ugly compared to the iPod Nano that was released yesterday. The walkman doesn't even have a video camera.
'even'?
Nanos didn't 'even' have video cameras a couple of days ago. I don't like this product... it's something you should already have in your cell phone (as well as your grainy camera), but that's an ad hoc argument if I've ever heard one.
LMAO ikurt has officially been labelled a moron
This walkman looks like it came with a free fake diamond "grill" from the ghetto island counter in the mall.
though it may have that stupid grill thing, it will probably have megabass and all those features none of the other phones have.
Regardless of whether you like the design or not, if you're an audiophile then check these out. I've got last year's version and the sound quality is streets ahead of most other players, including ye olde Nano (although I can't speak for the one released a couple of days ago).
if those earbuds are like the MDR-XB40X, they suck, BIG TIME
compared to what? What audio device comes with better headphones? I honestly don't think there is one, but perhaps I'm wrong. None of the major ones even come close in this department.
Of course, if this is important to you, you already have great headphones, so perhaps you don't want to pay for Sony throwing these in?
saw these in the sony centre building in Tokyo they had TV tuners you could record programs and play them was pretty awesome if these are same devices I saw would of bought one if they worked in UK and they also had a psp tv tuner which would attach to the usb port on the 3000
that is one piece of sexy i want!
I want one
Sony should have been first with all this mp3 players
* fixed storage is primitive
* non-removable storage is primitive
* non-removable batteries are primitive
* non-gaplessness is primitive (if this doesn't do gapless, that is)
* wired remotes with LCD screens: those were the days. Not having to whip out the unit to control basic things while you go about your day walking, cycling, sitting...
MiniDisc, I still love you despite SonicStage and aging 1GB storage sizes.
It looks good but let's wait until the 32g/64g versions are released!
Too bad Sony REFUSES to make any media software for their mp3 players and SE phones!
Sonic Stage is still used in Japan and uses Sony's proprietary ATRAC file format! Both items are virtually "dead" outside of Japan! If Sony can create GOOD media software (similar to iTunes for iPods) for the device, then it'll have a really good chance of selling (well).
Also, the players are only available in Japan and only in Japanese, though some online Japanese stores I've contacted will export them but at a hefty price incl. shipping, mainly due to the high value of the Yen!
