Video: Microsoft's Windows 7 ad punishes Kylie with Swedish "rock"
There's nothing we like better than putting on Europe's The Final Countdown and listening to it over and over and yes, over again. The 80's "rock" anthem is so damn catchy and just happens to be the theme music behind Microsoft's (first?) Windows 7 television commercial. The bit brings back Kylie who has cast aside Vista and other childish things for Microsoft's latest OS. It's "snappy and re-pon-ki-ser," says the 5 year old. Aww, shucks. Let the cute wash over you in the videos (new and old) after the break.
Windows 7
Vista
Windows 7
Vista

"Snappy and responsive".... LOL. Sure, it runs fairly well on lower spec hardware compared to Vista, but if you want snappiness, just get an SSD.
...and I'm sure HP and the likes will make sure to turn down that "snappiness and responsiveness" a notch by installing as much as "value added" software on their new PCs.
Wait, so if I get an SSD I don't have to get an OS? The SSD just magically runs all the programs? What?
Yeah SSD rocks indeed!';)
@Amrosorma: Are you saying that I can just buy Windows 7 in a box without any computer, and it will magically run by itself? :P
Actually, pika, I'm not sure anyone knows what the hell you're trying to say.
Clearly the low rankings come from people who've never used SSD's.
Let the 1.8" 160Gb Atom crowd feater in their ignorance...
@ monteb: No, the low rankings come from people who know the difference between an OS and a storage device.
ITS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!
oh jeeze...that girl is adorable. Just like Boo from monsters inc.
you could get an ssd,
or you could buy 3 500gb 16mb cache 7200rpm sata 2 hard drives and put them in raid0 like i did ;) (64mb/s transfer)
The second one was an excellent dose of reality to combat the nonsense in mac vs pc. The first one was cringe worthy.
The second one isn't bad, but I almost died laughing at the first one. I don't know what I would do if I saw it on tv. I probably would die laughing. But at least then I would expire in a jovial state... common M$ you can do it.
lolcats in microsoft ads...wow
Anyway, they were both awesome.
You realize the second one was for vista
I first saw the ad on TV. I wasn't paying attention to it until I head Europe blasting from my speakers. Then I rewound the DVR...
I have a ton of nieces and nephews, the first commercial moves just like a kids mind works: abrupt and all over the place.
I thought it was brilliant!
@chrise524: Spelling Microsoft with a dollar sign for the "s". How very original of you.
Of course Europe has a new album out - that like windows 7 builds on tradition, but updates it for 2009!
Check it out at

OMG
She is a 5yrs. who read Gizmodo, CNET, Maximum PC, ZDNet !!
not Engadget? wtf
@ irdepesca
she's already smarter than us.
maybe shes smarter than you...
She doesn't read those sites, she just saw them when she hacked into her dad's computer. So her dad was running Windows 7, reading reviews, and cutting out the good bits.
...for some reason.
I´m a comp..... pc, and i´m four and a half. Awesome cute funny.
I love that first ad... the best one I've seen come out of Microsoft. I guess it is easier to make good ads when you know people like the product.
racists, depicting asian kids as low IQ
Oversensitive much?
just so you know, it wasn't mean to sound like that. it sounded waaay better in my head.
BTW, its a stupid ad.
The stereotype of asians being bad with computers must be overcome!
YOU'RE A STUPID AD!
lol oversensitive? I think he's just bad at trolling seeing as how 4 and a half year olds generally are not 31337 h4x0rs
Rock or not, Final Countdown is a lot better than most American hip hop songs. And btw, Europe are much less uglyer than Jay-Z.
By definition, the world's worst rock song, is better than the world's best rap "song".
GOB used it, so therefore it must rock.(Arrested Development FTW)
ITS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!
At first I was going to rank your comment negatively for bad grammar, until I remembered Europe is the name of the band, and realized you were saying the band is less ugly than Jay-Z, not the continent ^_^
Rock or not, Final Countdown is a lot better than most American hip hop songs. And btw, Europe are much less ugly than Jay-Z.
awesomeness! this new one is a great response in the Mac vs PC series of ads. Europe may make it even better, anyone remember the windows 98 rock tune at their first launch screen? Think of Final Countdown on login...
(cue Gob Bluth)
She would have included Engadget but it is way too pro Mac
/Or too Mac Pro
BING!
But its readers aren't! All hail microsoft.
And Gizmodo is the exemplification of all neutrality and unbiased-ness.
super-cute child exploitation
I say we get INTERPOL on their asses.
Only as annoying as Mac commercials.
At least in these commercials, they show how their OS is good, and not how the other guy sucks.
No, there's 100% less smug here.
IMO the ad would be better if she didn't say I'm a PC and I'm 4 1/2.
The irony is if a PC were 4 1/2 years old, it wouldn't be able to run vista. (Nor would a mac more than 4 years old be able to run Snow Leopard)
The "I'm a PC" line in a direct attack at the "I'm a Mac" ads. Proudly stating that she is a "PC" and not just the fat, stupid, stereotype that the Mac ads portray PC people as.
The "4 1/2" is saying that if a kid can use a PC then everyone should be able to and that it's not as complicated as Mac people would have you believe.
Therefore, that simple little line is the most powerful statement in the ad and what the whole series of ads is centred around.
@Muddy,
Yeah I can see where you're coming from, but I just think a little girl uploading and sending a photo is sweet - seems 'natural' and unscripted, but then in the end when she said the tag line it kinda spoils the 'innocence' (like some adult/ad director told her to say that), if I can put it that way.
It'd be better if she said something like "I'm 4 1/2 and I can use a PC" or something along that line. But the "I'm a PC" tag line is used in current MS ads :P oh well.
what a crock
Sony Vaio FW41 ftw!!!!
You beat me to it... :( Oh well. SONY VAIOS pretty much kick ass!
Get that girl a mac, or i will call child services! :-P
get your head out of your ass, or ill call the child services
audio is so badly edited in first ad. sample with "happy words" used twice :)
kid's not a voice actress but still..
This is probably the best Windows ad I've ever seen! I love how it starts off very cute and I think "Whatever, another kid ad". Then the little girl totally rocks my freakin' face! :)
best...reply...ever
Those ads somehow reminded me of a more innocent and cute version of this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2-UuIEOcss#movie_player
I hate these ads. The worst bit is, they'll just regurgitate this crap for a European audience except they'll change the kid for some wee brat with a whiny English accent.
This could very well have been an ad for a diaper. Not sure about the ''responsive'' part, but ''smooth'', ''polished''? C'mon Microsoft, get some screenshots in there, show the customers some features, sheesh. Now it just look like vaporware. Or vaporwear. And nobody wants a vaporwear diaper.
lmao wow Microsoft is the just to funny them ads is cute real talk i'll watch them lmao
Wow! Microsoft is even going after it's smallest demographic groups of users! Pedophiles and soccer moms!
Wow!
The last thing that would cross my mind is pedophiles.
So yeah, you have some issues. #1 stay away from kids.
Microsoft's demographic is more like "everyone."
Yeah, we all know that pedophiles use Linux.
#1 She doesn't have any camera issues.
#2 The website for the camera says:
"Drivers for Mac and Linux not available at this time"
Things I like about the ad:
Good use of "cute" with the kid and the colors. Kylie should be a regular.
Nice curveball with the music, may be seen as to sharp of a contrast to some.
"More happy is coming" is a good tagline. "happy words means happy pictures" also was a nice fit.
I doubt this is part of an overall campaign, i saw some "concept" ads on Neowin that have a whole different look going, so this just may be a preliminary spot to really get the quotes from various sources out there.
That is hands-down the creepiest goddamn ad I've ever seen.
It might be creepy to some people but to the rest of us that have emotions it's very nice ^_^
Yea, she'd be much 'happier'.
Why would you waste all that page space to show us your a moron?
Lol, I think they finally have a commercial that rivals that stupid mac shit. Very nice microsoft. NOW all I have to wonder is how the hell Macintosh will make fun of a 4 year old :'''( it brings a tear to my eyes
why is the mouse black in the first one ? it is win7 or mac ?
2 words my friend powerpoint presentation -.- Stupid slide shows.....
"My name is Kylee and I found all of these strange pictures on my daddy's PC. I'm going to make a slide show of them and show mommy!"
"Drivers for Mac and Linux not available at this time"
because on the mac, they arent needed. the os is smart enough to see an external drive plug in, and see that it contains photos. macs dont need the ~wonderful~ value added software that the bs camera companies make you install in windows.
but i can see why youre frustrated.
hahahah!
well it looks like you have it all figured out then...
Normally I'm not a big fan of ad placements with kids, but this kid is adorable and funny. The second ad is gold.
Microdot: Same for Windows.
You douche.
no no, have you forgotten, ever since apple invented PNP it has been exclusive to their Macs.
Wow these are the first microsoft ads I didnt throw up at. The little cute child probably helps... you know when a company sucks ass when it has to resort to child labour...
Daaaaawwwwwwwww...!!!
ProfessorKaos @ Sep 11th 2009 9:40AM
"Why would you waste all that page space to show us your a moron?"
And what do you think YOU'RE doing?
PedOS... Mmmm children.
LOL have you noticed how the agency and production company added their small "advertisement" in the first frame?
http://www.tweetphoto.com/m9rgakxq
I'm not going to buy an OS patronized by a 5 years-old girl, how cute she may be.
The message is clear : W7 is a toy for kids, not a tool for teens, gamers and adults.
the first clip is the worst MS ad I have ever ever seen
the second is much better, but how those ads would make me use a pc rather than my mac?
Windows 7 is a pile of shit!
whoa, I never saw that coming...
this cracked me up... and i'm (right now) Team PC... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QgecuatemQ
i'm actually hyped for Win7, i've never bought anything major for a PC before...
She was more cuter in the first Ad.
Some of you people are just heartless, though that was to be expected. This is the best combination of cute overload and epic music I've ever seen!
I just had someone ask me what the commercial was about when they heard the final countdown. So, +1 for MS.
Dad has all these words on his computer. Dad walks in .."WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO MY PRESENTATION?!?!"
I'm just sooo tired of all these Apple fan boys low ranking all these Windows users. As a long time Windows developer, I'm just sick and tired of seeing 'Highest Ranked' on everything but Microsoft related products. Its like the world is brainwashed into thinking that Microsoft has done some unsavory things like:
Misrepresent Vista hardware requirements resulting in a class action lawsuit because of Areo's poor performance and weaker hardware (can you say FATWARE?)
Acquiring third party code like Sybase SQL and Caligari and then shutting said company down or failing to complete their merger agreements and leaving similar companies high and dry
Violating license agreements and purposing releasing and incompatible Java virtual machine, to inhabit and cripple developer platforms and force favoring and incomplete and proprietary, bloated, .NET platform
Threatening OEMs with expensive licensing hikes unless they play nice and distribute Windows pre-installed on all products.
And all I see is 'highest rank' on anything Apple... its no wonder that Apple Fan boy was coined here. When will Windows user's ever, ever, get a 'highest rank' mark on engadget?
Are there any, I mean, at least ONE Microsoft fan boy readers on engadget? Its hard enough that their editors or sooo anti-microsoft by Never posting a Microsoft related product....
Where are those Microsoft fan boys?
I'm a Microsoft fanboy.
wow... you are really really really rare around here.
Microsoft was trying too hard to fit as many demographies it could into the commercial.
