Original Game Boy repurposed as external hard drive
Okay, so maybe this here mod isn't nearly as extreme as shoving an entire PC into the case of a classic Game Boy, but it's still pretty fantastic in its own right. Completed at some point during the dog days of summer, the 80GB Game Boy had its innards stripped and replaced with parts that enable a 2.5-inch 80GB SATA HDD to operate beautifully as a standard USB hard drive. The display you see here is (unfortunately) an illusion, as it's simply a professional-looking still insert that merely gives the impression of it paying Game Boy titles while offloading spreadsheets. Now, if someone could figure out how to make it pull double duty...

Seriously engadget, the real story here is the number of typos in the post.
At least somebody is playing attention...
Err, what typos?
typo: "the 80GB Game Boy had its innards stripped"
I didn't know they had those back then...
I think replacing the 80Gb drive from the old game boy with an 80Gb drive is lame. Sure it was a sealed unit so they needed a few small tools... and?
I mean they didn't mod anything except the cardboard screen and why do that to the 80Gb game boy just cause you swapped drives, what happened, they smash the screen so they are showing off their cardboard insert skills
sheesh I thought this was a gadget site not a scrap booker site
awesome
or maybe the left pic shows the unmodded gameboy?
ok *cough* ...with a cable stuck into it...
A week late...
http://gizmodo.com/5353616/gutted-classic-game-boy-made-into-80gb-hard-drive
...and seven dollars short xD
'Cos no one saves the day,
It's no one else's fault,
If you're a day late or dollar short,
Feelings that we thought,
Dreams we never caught,
Just a day late or dollar short.
So if I take my Startech enclosure with an old 80 GB HDD inside and shove it into something odd or unique I will get my crapgadget on the site?
see how many 3.5" HDDs you can get into an NES and you'll probably get your own post.
Who cares??!!
Ooooh, a tough guy...
Way to instigate and get off topic. Seriously this isn't engadget worthy. Who gives a hoot about some 40 year old virgin's gameboy mod.
* ducks in a corner and cries *
@superdick
Because Engadget posts something that you don't think is relevant you have to attack the person who made the mod?
yeah a hard drive that could be used as a gameboy while you wait for your files to be transfered would be coool
I'm not usually one to ask this, but really Darren, what's the point of this?
The point is "OMG THE GAMEBOY WAS A REALLY COOL PIECE OF EQUIPMENT NOW WE CAN PUT OTHER THINGS INSIDE!!!1!!!!11!! OMG A HARD DRIVE THOSE USED TO BE SO BIG AND HUGE NOW WE CAN PUT THEM IN GAMEBOYS WHICH DONT HAVE ANY STORAGE"
I thought someone put a computer (mini) inside a Game Boy case before, like 2 years ago. How is this (about the external hard drive) more impressive then that (mini computer in a Game Boy case)?

What do you know.. You guys had a post about it 2 years ago.. =P
i had no idea even though they included a link to that story in the article. OMG
Read it on Gizmodo last week boys, does anyone proof read your writing ?
Do you proofread yours?
@Rakar - Major4Play isn't writing an article on a widely read tech blog....
Awesome.
Wow, must be a slow Apple....er I mean news day.
what about the innerds of a SP placed inside the gameboy classic? There could theoretically be room for a SSD.
No no no all wrong. Add a 1.8' drive (or two) AND one of those controllers so you can use the screen to show stuff. (e.g temps, transfer speed, amount copied, etc) That would be awesome!
Just another $ITEM inside $ITEM2 story. Nothing to see here.
I'm pretty sure you just described porn, and I hear that's popular
ruined a gameboy IMO
If they had the original articles you would find out it was a BROKEN gameboy
http://hackaday.com/2009/09/04/80-gig-drive-inside-a-game-boy/
and actually if you look more into it, it's a fairly unique mod
http://hackaday.com/2009/09/08/update-game-boy-hdd-the-guts/
I think this would have been an interesting article had they used a small solid state drive (flash stick) and loaded it with .rom files. Enclosed it in the case where a game cartridge would go. And wrote a script that would allow you to select a game using the game boys controls and display.
Using a Game Boy as an external hard drive is hardly news, although original... it is far from useful!

The Game Boy's only purpose is to be a Game Boy.
We shed more than a few tears here in our offices whenever we hear about our own children losing their path in life at the hands of silly humans, in this case, one with a storage fetish.

What a waste of a perfectly good GameBoy.
u could probably make it do double duty by puting a 1.8 inch hdd and a gameboy advance sp in an original, and still have left over space to mod the harddrive onto the gameboy to store roms
or a gameboy micro even?
Question: If you guys all find this article to be unfit for your time... Why have you spent the time to comment and bicker about it? Is it possible to read an article, nod your head and move on? And who care who cares who reported it first? Engadget is the only Tech blog I read I wouldn't have seen this otherwise.
Over 2 months old, nice to see that engadget is up on the absolute latest news.
