Nokia Erdos: a shiny specter, or an OLED-equipped reality?
We're in no position to say that Nokia's so-called Erdos -- which was recently caught lookin' pretty in the video down in the read link -- is anything more than a fanatical mockup, but we're fully ready to be believers. To be frank, we've a hard time understanding why Nokia wouldn't showcase this gem at its recent Nokia World expo if it were indeed nearing release, but whatever the case, we've received a number of tips suggested that the OLED-packin' handset could be formally introduced as early as next month. Falling within the 8xxx series, this ultrathin, ultra-shiny slider boasts a stainless steel design, A-GPS, 3G support, a 2.4-inch QVGA (320 x 240) display, WiFi, USB, 5 megapixel camera (with video recording) and 8GB of internal storage. Feel free to have a look for yourself, but just in case this all proves to be nothing more than a figment of some guy's imagination, you should probably fall in love with the X6 as well. Video after the break.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

They should get Kevin Bacon to buy one
Great idea. They could play some music from "The Bacon Brothers" in the commercials. T_T
That's simply amazing!!!:))) I love NOKIA
Brilliant comment.
I wonder if there's a discount for people with low Erdos numbers?
I love that Nokia's not limiting WiFi to its N and E series.
Labled as Nokia 8800 XXXX in the end of the video. The design most certainly looks like a 8800 phone. Specs are plausible, and it's shown running S60v6. I say legit.
Technology finally caught up to premium price.
Expect it to cost $1000+ (more like $1500+) and land anywhere this or next year.
Me no want, buttons are too small.
Apple = fail. Why on earth doesn't it's top of the line smartphone not have an OLED screen? Seriously, i'm seriously considering selling my 3GS for a crapphone + zuneHD.
Really?
Is an OLED screen THAT important? The iPhone screen is probably one of the best I've seen on a phone, and despite OLEDs generally being better, they aren't that much of a leap.
you know you don't have to make the "with video recording" clarification anymore, do you?
Yeah, it should be the other way around (with STILL photos) - because one company has chosen to begin releasing products with only a video camera.
When will Symbian go away?
as far as i know the 8XXX series luxury phones usually aren't based on symbian, but on S40 so this one is probably too.
@ G
" Update: More details pouring in - the display is covered by glass, which remains silver when the screen is off and becomes transparent when the screen is turned on. And it runs on Symbian S60. "
When it doesn't have more market share than the next two or three operating systems combined.
Actually, S40 is Symbian, you know..
Nice
Xenon flash ? looks like that to me
Does it matter? Its super-premium. People buy it not because of camera but because of $1000+ price.
Rich man won't pay $1k for a piece of crap. So the features will not be compromised.
Kelvinyam: You know nothing about the world.
Says LED flash in the vid.

Cool
Looks like the real thing. Looks pretty sweet. Probably an excellent phone for those that haven't been fooled by the touch-screen hype. (I for one now sportng a HTC Hero, liking it, but sometimes really missing the hard buttons)
Agree with other commentators that Engadget really could drop the "with video" phrases, since it's only Apples iPhone that has been release without video recording so far, when it comes to high-end phones. Nokia phones always come with video, even the cheaper ones.
looks like a nice phone but slightly too oblong-ish to me
A beautifully crafted ad, bravo nokia! I think its a sexy phone, but i gotta pass.
The ergonomics of Nokia's 88XX series phones has and appears to continue to be excellent. They are the only mobile devices where the keypad is located in the centre of the phone - making it far more natural and comfortable to operate. (Try one in a shop and you'll experience this.)
Here's a page showing the (alleged) spec:
http://www.cellpassion.com/news/2009/09/12/-update-exclusive--nokia-erdos--the-8800-gets-more-bling---video-link--.aspx
Why don't they create a plastic version so mere mortals can afford one?
And improve the spec, so it is more like some of their OLDER models, such as the N95? IE, VGA video at 30FPS, not 15?
Why are we moving backwards people?
The 8000 series has never been about functions, it has always been about being shiny so you shouldn't be surprised if some commonplace functions (like VGA 30 FPS) are missing.
Spectre!
Stupid Amerenglish.
I'm sorry, I read that as,
"Nokia Erdos: a shiny sphincter, or an OLED-equipped reality?"
couldve been worse. and oled-equipped sphincter a reality.
couldve been worse. an oled-equipped sphincter a reality.
andres, mind repeating that? I didn't catch that.
I love my NOKIA 8800 Sirocco and this seems to be 5 times better than what I have. SOLD !!
I've owned a couple 8800 models and they were beautiful and elegant in their simplicity in both design and functionality. It never tried to be more than what it was; just a simple luxury phone.
The product could be real, but this video is not.
Folks,
Some intriguing observations...
- @ 0:24 "Precision engineering"... remarkable as an Eclipse 400!?
- @ 0:30 "Revolutionary rising keypad"... so it makes the overall thickness more consistent? Not too sure about the practicality. But if it's applied to any touchscreen glass, i.e. when we touch the complete flat surface, it'll magically "raise" like a dimple button - then I'd call revolutionary beyond the piezo sensor.
- @ 0:37 "Reflective, advanced scratch resistant"... but like many before, it'd be finger-print magnet.
- @ 0:57 "Fast download and upload with HSPA"... 10.2Mbps DL / 2Mbps UL like 6260 slide? Then prospective buyers in North America would be snubbed again with the majority 8800 series models. Well, I hope Nokia will consider one variant that works on 850/1900/AWS.
- @ 1:05 "5 Megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss optics, Dual LED flash"... looks more like a Xenon bulb but wouldn't it nice instead?
- @ 1:10 "Noise reduction microphone, Superior sound quality"... I really hope Nokia put some engineering inspirations from its Vertu side.
- @ 1:18 "Go silver OLED display for privacy"... would it mean the screen relatively dimmer, narrow viewing angle?
- @ 1:23 "Indication lighting for calls and missed events"... I'd be surprised if this model is running on S60 at all. If it's S60, then Nokia has "successfully" managed to make the UI experience more straight-forward, object-oriented like S40 then.
- @ 1:42 "Nokia 8800 XXXX, Outer perfection, Inner power"(?)... I like the dock. And, does it come with the matching Bluetooth handset?
- @ 1:50 "for internal use only"... a whole thing is far from launch?
Why has every flip or slider handset in Japan since last decade had a VGA or better display while even concept phones in 2009 show off 320x240? Are all these manufacturers that cheap?
It looks like a dildo.
I prefer function over price. The new N900 comes with a 3g phone. I have an N810 and use it much more than my computer or phone. To be smart and save money I am dropping my phone plan and buying a GO phone for emergencies. The N810 works great with Skype, tried Gizmo but it doesn't work as well. I have Google Voice for free SMS and Chat. However, I would buy a jail break G1 if I could buy from some other telecom company other then Verizon or T-Mobile.
Definitely real - I did some focus group testing for this thing ages ago - at least two years back I think. I was wondering what had happened to it - the prototype (wasn't working, wasn't much more than a shiny nugget) had a good, solid feel to it, incredibly desirable. But it's a little fashion phone as opposed to a rival to any smartphone.
"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Nokia Corporation," so I guess it was real.
