Sony's PS3 Slim gets the ColorWare treatment

You know, sometimes it's just fun to go to ColorWare's site and see just how ugly we can make our favorite consumer electronics. It was while trying to find just the right shade of puce for that Cisco 7900 Series desk phone when someone pointed out that the company is now offering custom-colored Sony PS3 Slims. Color the logo, the top, the base, and up to four controllers. They'll sell you a console outright for $449, or send yours in and they'll ugly it up for $149 (controllers cost extra).

I don't get your point... Are you saying that the only people who buy PS3's are guy or guy guys? I Know my wife would love her own Pink PS3. Not to mention $150 for a professional paint job really isn't that much. I sense a hint of jelousy in your contact because you can't afford it, so it's gay??

Isn't that the color scheme they always come up with for colorware pictures?
I guess they're ridiculing the fact that ColorWare even offers those garish colors. But I think the reason they do is so they can supply matching electronics for car projects on Pimp My Ride.

When could you ever only custom order a car in black?
My 1977 is red and custom ordered, 1935 was a custom order navy blue, and 1937 custom ordered in creme.
I'll take my more expensive cars since I like their engine size and styling thank you.
On the note of the article, I think colorware does a great job. I had two ipods colored from them before for myself and one as a gift. The finish is pretty nice. I couldn't justify the $150 for the PS3 color as a student with no income but if I made enough money, I would get it done.
@iClap: I would drop cash to see the world through your eyes for a day. I am betting it would be like a mashup of 'Through the Looking Glass' and a Happy Meal.

Rainbow Candy Colors are way better than Black, White, and Silver.
It will perfectly blend with your HD Set.
Here's the thing. The PS3 is black because most of the shit in your entertainment center, including the TV itself, will likely be black or dark shades of gray, maybe silver at the lightest. There's no point in having vibrantly colored or garish, multicolored, cheap-looking console sticking out like a sore thumb.
ColorWare is amazing if you don't choose the crap colors on purpose.
It makes the PS3 all the more playful!
Wow, that thing is hideous. I guess if you have the extra money laying around and an itch to make the little console stand out more in your entertainment center, go for it. I just hope you also have an inkling of artistic ability to go with your heavy wallet.
personally think it's pretty sweet looking, but I'd rather buy games and another controller.

The paint is scratch proof.
Why does it matter if it's scratch proof? My consoles haven't moved around since i bought them.
For the cost of a proper painting setup, the time involved with dismantling and taping your system, the risk involved with taking apart your system, and the learning curve of doing a nice paint job, it's well worth the cost. If you think you're going to get suitable results from a rattle can, have fun. This is far beyond that though.

And the area where the buttons are below the Blu-ray slot (right of the slot in this pic). You could call this the "deck" or perhaps the "tongue" area. It looks like it is silvered in this pic.

are you serious? what about uncharted, motostorm, resistance, kill zone, little big planet, wipeout hd, gran turismo, and not to mention all the third party titles like modern warefare and everything else the xbox has.
also anyone who pays $150 just to have a colored ps3 is wasting money. i dont care if you have the money to waste, if you do...use it for something good. a ps3 just sits in your living room the public wont see it anyway, its not like a cell phone.

Or you can buy the skin for the ps3 and controller for $20 at decalgirl.com , which I did last week (got the carbon fiber skin, and they have tons of other cool skins to choose from)
it looks nice to add different colors i would paint it white or silver :). mmm its too bad they only paint solid colors and don't put like graphics.
Until controllers have matching sticks and buttons, coloured ones will never be anything but ugly. However, I think a livening-up could potentially be a good thing for the PS3 Slim itself.

Colorware has come out with some damn good creations. I thought about getting my G1 done with them. They're so damn expensive though, but if you got it why not? They're only providing a service for those who want it, there shouldn't be so much hate for them.
