Stateside PS3 sales up 300% following Slim introduction

Boy, it sure likes Sony did something right slimmin' down (and slightly cripplin') that new PS3 of theirs. And sure, considering that the British picked up PlayStation 3 purchases a whopping 999%, maybe a Stateside retail bump of a "mere" 300% (for the first week after the price cut) is small potatoes. Or maybe we're just growing jaded. If this isn't great, good news enough for Sony, check it: as of August, according to a survey by GamePlan Insights, five of consumers' top 10 most-wanted games are on PS3 (including Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War III, Assassin's Creed 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2). For more exciting facts, figures, and details, check out the PR after the break.

PlayStation 3 Only Does 'Everything'
On September 1, the new 120GB PlayStation 3 hit retail stores, an incredible entertainment value for consumers at the new price point of $299. Our top retailers have reported a 300% lift in PS3 hardware sales and an increase of 140% in total hardware revenue across the PlayStation portfolio when comparing the first week of September to the week before the $299 price adjustment. Concurrently, the launch of a new PS3 marketing campaign, "It Only Does Everything," will continue to drive consumer education and awareness to the expansive PS3 benefits and features throughout the holiday season.
The launch of PSPgo on October 1 will continue to fuel consumer appetite for entertainment content and those eager to take the PlayStation experience on the go. PSP owners will have access to a tremendous library of movies, TV shows, comics, and exclusive games, such as LittleBigPlanet PSP, SOCOM: U.S Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, Final Fantasy Dissidia, Madden NFL 10 and many more.
And the best is yet to come. According to the August OTX industry survey of the launches that gamers want to buy most, 5 of the top 10 titles were on the PS3, including God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- more than any other console. SCEA is gearing up for one of the best content line ups in its history with some of the most anticipated releases launching in October with UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves and Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. With more than 25 exclusive titles slated through the holiday and into early next year, these games are just the tip of the iceberg.
No other entertainment device is better positioned for this holiday.

Whoppee... Your friend must have a 3 games library for his xbox and he enjoys playing alone. I cant imagine rebuilding my 100+ game library (and accessories) and forfeiting my gamer tags and online buddies just so i can have a "reliable" console. BTW i'm on my 2nd xbox set and it's far cheaper to pay microsoft $140 (although my xbox repairs are FOC) than to change my setup.
Lol at people bein butt hurt the PS3 is doing well. Anyone who says the ps3 doesn't have a game catalouge doesn't know what they're talking about. That argument was valid two years ago but not now. Ps3 exclusives > 360 exclusives IMO. the 360 has an overrated game catalouge.....still has some great games but not as many as people try to lead you to believe.
It's no surprise the ps3 saw an increase in sales. Many people wanted a ps3 but couldn't afford it. Now that it's cheaper and has alot of exclusives coming this year many are going to finally make that purchase without hesitation.
Microsoft needs to drop the price on the 360 another $100 to compete. The feature-performance price ratio just isn't there anymore. The games are the only thing going for it right now.
This is great news. I'm so happy to see the PSN community grow and more PS3's sold. I sadly bought my backward-compatible 80GB PS3 for $500, never thinking price cuts would be done. And after the Xbox 360 Elite price cut, I'm hoping to grab one of those. Maybe I'll trade in my Wii...
How did Sony "slightly cripple" the PS3 with the introduction of the slim version? I'm not looking to start a fight, I'm legitimately curious because I must have missed that article.
I know that backwards compatibility hasn't been in the picture for a while now, I just want to know what exactly makes it different than the previous model in the interest of assisting with a friend's potential purchasing decision.
The ability to install Linux maybe?
I'll buy the PS3 (again)... when GT5 comes out.
Ummm, I thought Modern Warfare 2 was exclusive to XBOX360 and PC......so why was it included on the list?
Because you were wrong? Just a guess
Microsoft's had a couple of years to do a proper redesign of the XB360. They had the opportunity to put an HD-DVD player in it to compete with BR. They could've put Sony to bed for good with an aggressive stance. Instead, they've been basically sitting back and coasting on Sony's incompetence up until now.
The problem with that strategy is when your opponent wakes up, you need to be ready for it.
that is what happens when you finally price the ps3 at a reasonable price...
modern warfare 2 is on ps3 and xbox360
I am also glad that its selling better, simply b/c this helps ensure that it will be around for the future generations, and more competition is more better.
If there's a Rez sequel or another Sly Cooper in the works, I might be interested. The new Katamari has piqued my interest, but one game won't do it. Not interested in sports games and as far as FPS's go, I'm of the opinion that if you've played one you've played 'em all.
I haven't payed much attention to the PS3 thusfar because of the ridiculous price. The PS2 had a great variety of games. What's out there for the PS3 outside of the aforementioned sports and FPS games and RPG/hack & slash (i.e. anything where numbers float off of enemies as you attack)?
we told ya so sony heh. failures
I definitely want one of these and I found a place to get it and an opportunity to save a great deal of money...
I just found something incredible! If any of you live in an area where there is the new Clear 4G WiMax Internet service, purchase your Clear Pick2 from this company and you will receive your new PS3 120GB Slim for only $99 plus $15 shipping. Their web site is http://www.clearnevada.com
I know ten of my friends who have done business with these people and they all have great things to say about them.
I just ordered mine from them...what a great deal!!!
Well, there goes the free PSN... Don't believe me? Wait and see... (I hope I am wrong on that) But i am glad to see sales picking up. It is a great system with a powerful graphics processor. Hopefully this will entice more 3rd party companies to make games for it and not just multi-system games either. Time will tell...
Ok first am i a sony fanboy? I don't consider myself one but yes i do own a PS3 and i look at things strictly from VALUE (WORD OF THE DAY) stand point. i will admit i have never played a 360 game and most likely won't not because I'm a hater but because the games i want to play are on PS3. Simple things first as many have pointed out the economy is in the tank and people are holding onto and counting their pennies worldwide not just in the states. I myself now 35 years old look at value more then ever and to honest when i was in my teens i didn't care about the cost of a system or games i asked and received but fast forward to adulthood and i have to pay for this addiction. So looking at what i get for MY hard earned dollar the PS3 was the obvious choice. many have commented that the Wii is ahead based on price and yes there is some truth to that but i sadly have to admit it is a pretty damn fun system to play as long as you aren't looking to be blown away by graphics or team online play. I had one for a week but sold it why cuz it not my cup of tea. No jab at Wii owner but i grew up and i PS3 has more games for my age. I have been in Target or Best Buy and seen parent buys Wii based on one core fact...PRICE. All parents are as informed as those of us that are here and are parents. Some parents see PRICE and a VIDEOGAME system and could care less which system it was. So yes Wii is where is most due to price but like i said it pretty damn fun. On to the 360 i will admit i don't keep up with 360 news much but i will say i even heard of the RROD because my friend husband 360 has died TWICE since having it. My PS3 has died...NEVER. Now i know there have been been dead PS3s out there but you would be more hard pressed to find one compared to 360. Also as i spoke about in the beginning i look at VALUE now yes the PS3 has been the more expensive in appearance but overall is the price leader compared to 360 is the PS3. Some will point out that you don't really need WiFi but i say my PS3 in my bedroom and i my computer setup in another room with the router. I'm not running a cable from 3 rooms over. On to bluetooth... I enjoy the fact that i can use the earpiece that came with my phone and thus not have to purchase additional equipment so money saved! Now the Playstation Network... It's FREE!!! Remember this is about VALUE so FREE is good. I'm going to skipped the whole media server thing although the PS3 can do it from another room as i mentioned out of the box due to the WiFi. Finally the last thing from me is Blu-Ray... We all know that games are getting larger. Developers outgrew cartridge moved onto CD outgrew that moved onto DVD...see the pattern here? Sony has outgrown DVD and moved onto Blu-Ray...Uncharted 2 anyone? So you think it won't be long before other developers outgrow DVD? People are buying HDTVs left and right and they want quality. They promo video for GT5 looks amazing on the Sony 65in W Series TV in SonyStyle in Pentagon City (shameless plug) But joking aside it does and games like that will continue to push the envelope and push games out of the limits of DVD. I predict 360 to show it age in the next 3 - 4 years just due to the medium that 360 games are on. For those that own HDTVs and PS3s isnt it nice to see your movies in full 1080P that you paid your hard earned money for and not have to buy another piece of equipment! So to review Wii selling best due to low price, 360 is great if you have lot of EXTRA money after buy it to add the headset, Live subscription, WiFi, and if you have a HDTV and dont watch movies yet in HD a Blu-Ray player. If the 360 did all the PS3 does and cost less i would easily had gotten that so it not about loyalty; thats when i was young and everything had to be Sega (Master System and Genesis). Right now it's about what will give me my moneys worth and i will say i want Sony succeed cuz i've bet on losers b4 (Sega CD, 32x,Atari 7800, 3DO) and i want to enjoy my investment as other PS3 owners do. So to Sony thank you for lowering the price and getting aggressive (a year late in my opinion) cuz you still have a long road ahead. (Any typos i'm sorry for its 6 in the morning)
I like that 3 of the 5 "top 10 most wanted" titles Sony mentions in their press release are multiplatform - so unless you really want God of War III (PS3 exclusive because it's produced by a Sony-owned studio) or Gran Turismo 5 (produced by Polyphony, also owned by Sony), most of those "most wanted" games will be on the 360 also. Thanks for the tip, Sony.
