A note about last week's Engadget Podcast

A lot of our faithful listeners have inquired as to the status of last week's podcast. We regret to inform everyone that we lost the audio just after we were done recording. To be more exact, the Mac Pro at AOL's studio which was recording our rare (and magical) in-person podcast decided to upchuck the boogie and destroy our precious tracks. What that means is we will be skipping that show (it is already the following week) -- though in the next few days we'll bring you the first-ever Engadget Show as well as a proper podcast. Sorry everyone, and thanks for understanding!

you know the funny thing is I wanted to record the show while listening to the Ustream but found it unnecessary cause I thought you would post it up the next day anyway...
As a listener of that podcast, I feel extremely privileged to have listened to a piece of Engadget history that will never be recovered. *sniff*
So I suppose there is a redundancy recording setup for this week and the ones to follow... This would never have happened to Leo Laporte! I kid of course. I am sorry you guys lost your recording, hopefully this thread will find you an avid stream recorder.
i too feel privileged
get testdisc, it can recover data off any drive no matter how many times you format it. I use it all the time when helping friends out. It WILL recover the podcast. I got it off hack a day's site....
It has happened to Leo Laporte. But he is hard core, he re records the whole thing...
Only on a Mac?
... and suddenly it went, like, bleeeee-bleee-bleee-blip and then, like, half of my podcast was gone! It was a very good podcast!
Macs just work.
That's because it's a great gaming machine.
Awww shucks..... we forgive you Josh!!
I can't believe you would stand me up like this...
Obviously a lie, macs cannot crash or fail in any way.
And the "zomfg fap fap fap Macs sux0rz!!!" starts in 3, 2...
oh wait, too late...
'Cause we all know the same thing wouldn't happen if it was a windows laptop that blue screened right?
Actually Mark, it wouldn't. But that's just because people are so used to that by now.
Hmmm, no headaches with a Mac ?
So what is the wish for today? "I wish I had a PC running Windows 7!"
So much for Macs being free of viruses and crashes. Well at least free of crashes, I should sue Apple for false advertising. They lead me to believe regardless of what I did on the internet I would never get a virus regardless of how many times I put in my password for no apparent reason when ever something asked. Also that nothing would ever crash or get a spinning pinwheel of death.
I guess I'm ready to compromise.....
I wonder if they will still be using a mac pro for next week pod cast. That will be a show on it's own.
Shield your eyes Mac fans. This blasphemy cannot be true. (Sorry, I couldn't resist)
Clearly you should have recorded the audio with a linux machine.
Perhaps the most prestigious gadget group who speaks english, and you lose an electronic recording
you MORONS
Take it easy buddy, a little strong no?
Can you fault him? I think he stated the situation rather well.
You lie! Mac fans demand an apology in the next podcast.
I'm pretty sure the guys will have a word or two to say on the next podcast; they'll apologise in their inimitable dead-pan borderline sarcastic way that we love so dearly!
WoofWoof, I just donated lots of +'s to your campaign.
No viruses, way back machine, overpriced, yeah that worked well.
I demand that you do the entire podcast all over again, with the exact same lines. You can skip the brain-wrenching mono-music at the beginning and end and Nilay's ''rock & roll'' catchphrase.
Skip the chiptunes? Hell no.
Lols
You must have been using a Windows PC. Macs don't crash.
You'd think with all those CDs sent back to AOL they'd have enough storage medium to back up!
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. Macs have a delete button too. Excuses, Excuses.
PEBAK
I hate you
AOL and Apple ???? no wonder
I think you need to be more specific about who we should blame--
the users of the Mac Pros, the applications on the Mac Pros, the operating system on the Mac Pros, or the physical Mac Pros.
Understand? Can't say I do.
Redundancy, redundancy, redundancy. Never trust just one computer. You guys should know that.
Just do another podcast tonight. thanks
Luckly I was listening live!
So, I guess you weren't using ProTools? As those audio files are created as they are recorded. So, you wouldn't lose them. That's the beauty of PT. Check into it, next time. :)
I can see it now, Steve Jobs delivering a press release on the Mac that Crashed.
Dear Apple users,
This is a sad day for Mac and Apple; the first crash on a Mac has just occurred. I can assure you that this is an isolated event, and in no way will this happen to another machine. You won't believe that because I'm an honest man, you'll believe it because I am Steve Jobs, lord of the Macs and all its users. You will buy whatever I release (including the newly price-dropped Apple TV you neglected to buy), and defend all of the letdowns we have caused you, namely the fiasco we call the "It's only rock and roll" event which was on the day the Beatles were remastered on iTunes, and our iPod touch was supposed to have a Camera, but some people decided to delay both of them. Hell, even Yoko Ono Lennon said the Beatles were coming to iTunes, but nooo, somebody at EMI had to delay it.
So, with that said, buy more iPods, use iTunes more, and remember, a Mac will never crash again. EVER!!!
Sincerely,
St192eve jokdf39bsr
Fatal System Error
It sucks that I missed the podcast (especially after last week's Apple and Android events), but I forgive you.
Too bad nobody else bothered to save the show from Ustream.
Hmm does this explain mobiles inconsistent schedule? No podcast for them last week either.
yeah- the mac pro did it... maybe a palm fan-boy accidentally hit command-delete on it too.
Next time throw an mp3/iphone or some other recording device on the table for rough backup.
Damn sloppy.
I can't help but feel the live ustream recording was the cause of this. Had you just stuck to the regular schedule and not tried to do a live podcast to the .01 % of your audience then we wouldn't be in this position. As it stands, we are now out of sync with you. You must now record a 2 hour podcast. Don't worry about time, we love listening to you guys regardless of what you talk about.
BTW, there are reports coming in that there was no Mac crash. In fact it wasn't even recording. This story about the Mac crashing was just a facade to cover up the embarrassment of not pressing the record button.
steve must not have got enough unicorn tears in the recording mac.
I'm just at a loss to how this could happen. You are a TECHNOLOGY BLOG that has been podcasting since the begging, in addition to having a real budget, unlike some other blogs. Why not have not only redundancy in recording, but just make sure SOMEONE records the U-Stream feed ICE.
I'm above taking cheap shots at Macs..... no, wait, I'm not. This is friggin' funny.
Lens cap was on the mic.
"backup often"
I wish the podcasts would get "chatted" over a little later in the evening. I would love to participate whilst drinking Zima's of course, but unfortunately I have a 9-5 that prevents me from "chatting"
that's unlucky. what a crappy week to lose the podcast. i guess there's something to be said about analog recordings...
Last weeks podcast was suppose to be the juiciest one ever, at least in my opinion! Yall don't know how much i've anticipated this podcast? I'm surprised that none of the people that listened to it live did not record it! I'm still hoping someone's gonna come out and say: OOh OOHH i recordedededed it!!!
Thank you for this, Josh. The previous posting was like, "Oh, whoops, see you next week!" but all we really needed was a decent explanation. Keep up the good work.

Nowhere here does it say 'destroying audio'. I
'm disappointed. If I had known it did, I would have bought a Mac.
Could anyone give us an overview of what they talked about in the Lost Podcast? For those who couldn't hear the Ustream thingie?
I think we can all safely guess what is was like anyway:
Paul stumbled and mumbled through his bits, doing his best to avoid being coherent at any point.
Josh followed up every funny line someone else said by repeating it word for word as if it was his own joke, perhaps sometimes making a slight addition to it so as to take the credit/ All the while he is fuming that someone else managed to say something funny.
Nilay laughed uproariously at almost everything Josh said but still managed to come out of it sounding the most knowledgeable. At some point in proceedings he mentions that he used to be a lawyer.
you did that well :)
But could you just post the chip tune along with a recorded sincere apology so i have something to listen to?
Come on! no redundancy while recording? and you claim to be geeks into tech?... sure you won't let it happen again and prepare with proper redundancy, right?
Please list the topics you talked about with links to the posts like you do on every podcast, so we can know what it was about
The Engadget Show.... geesh you guys are getting so full of yourselves. But, seeing as how you can't even record a podcast and the density of gadget info in the podcasts has been steadily declining as of late (with your thirst for fame) - I think this is my cue to leave the podcast. Heck, gizmodo gives easier/better access to gadget info - I wish they'd do a podcast.
Well, its the 17th, and still no podcast and no Engadget Show. As a weekly fan of the podcast this is fairly disappointing. Also, I'm definitely NOT a fan of doing the UStream on friday while I'm working, which basically means I have to wait until the weekend to listen to it, at which point I'm busy doing weekend things, which I will refrain from mentioning.
Can't it just go back to the way it was? Those were such good time...
