We know that Palm's hard at work implementing desperately needed
payment infrastructure for its
App Catalog, and we might now be getting some of the first glances of what it -- and the non-beta App Catalog as a whole -- will look like. Major new features include the aforementioned support for credit card payments, some sort of tag cloud that appears to show up when searching, and integrated app management, while many other screens have been gently tweaked from the early release
Pre owners are using today. Last we'd heard, Palm had been targeting mid-September for e-commerce to make its grand debut, which is like... now, so we're thinking we won't be waiting long to see this out and about.
[Thanks, Mitchell R.]
A lot nicer.
Yeah, its actually usable now with in-app application-manangement...
Looks a lot prettier too.
When a friend told me, I just had to take some screenshots and let engadget know :)
WebOS's UI is just gorgeous! ...and this is coming from an iPhone owner since day 1.
it really is, it just needs some better hardware. and fast.
Ya, I was hearing that people were wishing for a Tegra pre, but that ship has sailed when the Pre was released. Maybe the second Pre will make use of better hardware...*shrugs*
Lovely interface...im also a iPhoner and love it.
It's great to see someone else putting in a great effort on usability and presentation.
Oddly my fat fingers love the iPhone screenboard and hate physical keyboards, but thats just me.
Competition will make then all better and better, bring it on.
whats wrong with the pre's hardware? it has a pretty hefty CPU http://www.precentral.net/palm-pres-processor-fast
I think maybe they're talking about the keyboard/screen/camera? Because in no way is the OMAP3 poor hardware.
And I mean it's the same as the 3GS, too, and that's not bad right?
Tegra is actually a SLOWER CPU than the A8 in the Pre. The Tegra is an amazing GPU, but considering webOS currently is without GPU support for even the chip it has, it'd be useless in the Pre (and it's my opinion that it is better off sticking to dedicated media devices rather than smartphones - I'd rather the increased CPU speed for my smartphone needs rather than increased GPU which mostly only helps with games and media).
But I'd bet 1.2 comes this week, maybe even as soon as later today. I've got no inside info but it seems like they needed to get the App Catalog ready first.
I'm wishing for a landscape keyboard, something like the likness of the HTC touch Pro 2 and i'll be all in
"I'm wishing for a landscape keyboard"
You can get one via homebrew but it's not assured to work. http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/On_Screen_Keyboard . Development is moving quickly though.
i was talking more on the hardware not software side ed :)...a landscape keyboard slider running WebOS.
the Pre camera is good for a cell phone and better then the iphone 3gs especially in low light cause it has a flash. my two cents. And the keyboard isn't my favorite but you get used to it and it works good
@ whoever made the comment earlier
The Pre DOES need a hardware update -- the specs are fine, but the actual industrial design needs some work. There are some quality control issues.
My Pre is fantastic. WebOS is a dream. I actually love the form factor and the vertical slider... I think its a very natural way to use the device.
But it has some design quirks that are distracting (and in many cases, unacceptable). Like some batteries being too small for the compartment, causing the phone to randomly turn off. And the top half separating too much from the bottom half, causing too much "give" vertically and horizontally ("Oreo" effect).
Other than that, I think the phone is a complete winner, but those problems definitely need to be solved by 2nd gen.
I wish I wasn't forced into getting the "Everything Plan" if I wanted to buy the Palm Pre!
You don't have to get the everything plan, you just have to get an everything data plan, and those start at 70/month. If you get a Pre, you're going to want unlimited data and text.
What's so wrong about the Everything plan? It's like the cheapest compare to other competitors, and it's unlimited minutes and data...
yea really, you basically just said, "man i don't want a great deal on my monthly bill!"
There is nothing wrong with the "Everything Plan" and in fact, industry wide it is a good deal. But I am under a family plan and I already have unlimited text and data usage and if I want the Pre I still have to "upgrade" to the "Everything Plan" when in reality, it doesn't offer me anything more that I would need that I already have and I pay significantly less than $70 a month.
I just pray that the HTC Hero does not get shackled by the "Everything Plan".
Get an EPRP family plan, google to find out how.
It is $110 for two lines, unlimited data, text, any mobile, nights and weekends and 1500 anytime minutes. It blows everything else out of the water.
One bonus with Sprint's current plans. You have unlimited minutes when you call ANY cell phone on ANY carrior, as long as your phone is connected to a Sprint tower. When you are roaming it only counts agenst your minuts.
I checked, and 90% of the 450 minutes are spent calling other cellphones! So I suspect that the next full cycle with this free upgrade, I will probably use less than an hour of my minuts.
@ DR
I am satisfied with my plan for the most part except that I have to upgrade to a plan that I don't need to get the phone that I want. Does the plan you are referring to allow me to purchase and use the Palm Pre on it?
UCF KNIGHTS!
Haha, it seems like no one knows who they are. Some one has to represent!
Go Knights!
living in tower 4 right now, sophomore year. sucks we have such a horrible football team...
Yes, just go through the EPRP site and you get the Everything Data Family 1600 plan.
What a huge turnaround for Palm. Man, I've seen so many pics of the WebOS and used it a few times. Frankly the most gorgeous OS out there. Not to start a flame-war, but I truly do not see how the iPhone OS can be so praised. It might be fluid, but I cannot stand not having multi-tasking, or a completely tied-down device, and you can obviously tell I use WINMO. Still, I cannot wait for the HTC Hero. Seems 2010 will be a fun year in tech and phones. Sorry for going off topic, jsut my two cents.
Hey, many of us are on the same page as you. Though I'm moving from WinMo to Android (Sprint Hero) & maybe the Pre as a secondary phone.
One of the best parts of the iPhone is the single hardware button (aside from volume and power). I've tried to switch over to the myTouch 3G but after 2 years of one button goodness the myTouch had to go back. webOS though is one pretty OS though.
It is one gorgeous OS though. Just fix some of the battery issues and bring it to some other carriers!
Why did the number is ratings/reviews go down on the new?
Hahahaahah, nice observation!
Most likely Engadget found the new App Catalog picture on the internet ten hours after it was taken, and then took a picture of the current App Catalog on their own Pre for a comparison, during which time it got another 14 ratings.
Yea, one of the WebOS Internals guys was showing it off on IRC. Those appear to be his screenshots.
There Everything plan is cheaper than AT$T's barely anything plan. Anyway yes WebOS UI is Awsome and the hardware in my opinion is pretty damn good. It could be better but it will serve its purpose until a new Pre is released. Come on WebOS 1.2 Hurry up and come out!!!
Over at precentral.net people are clammering, crying, praying, hoping, (enter verb here) for the new WebOS 1.2. I hope they add video recording to it, if not, oh well, i'm still pretty happy with it.
You must have lucked out. My Pre was wiggly and loose and had the annoying backlight leak. So did the offered replacement. I really like the Pixi though. I wish it had wifi but its still looks very tempting.
THere almost certainly won't be video recording in 1.2. It fixes a ton of stuff though and should be a great update.
Nuce touch going with a google voice app to show updated app catalog.
Well, if we take all 50 apps and divide it by the number of people who bought the Pre (about 3) then that gives us about 17 apps per person, give or take :P
Lol Pre already has much more than 50 apps and over half a million phones sold. Somebody is upset they are stuck in an AT&T contract.
Not sure I follow...for 70 bucks with the iphone, you don't get any included text messaging, unlike the Sprint plan. How are those equal? In order to get a plan equal to the Everything Data 450 on Sprint with AT&T, you'd need 40 for the 450 minutes, 30 for the iPhone data plan, 20 for unlimited texting, and then just to make the plans match up, 10 for the AT&T Navigator. That seems like more than 70 for the same features you get with the Sprint plan - 30 bucks a month more. Sure, lets take out the GPS and its still 20 bucks a month more (even though its included in the Sprint plan.) I'm getting these prices directly from the AT&T site.
For the record, the Pre actually is up to 70 apps now.
and for the record the at&t contract is not $70 and cant even come close to sprints contract. douche.
The other thing that needs mentioning is that now on Sprint for that $70 per month you now get unlimited calling to any mobile number, which for many (at least most people I know) is effectively unlimited calling.
So for $70 on Sprint you get nearly unlimited calling, unlimited data, unlimited texting, unlimited GPS.
For $70 on AT&T you get 450 minutes and unlimited data.
Sprint is only $60 a month if you sign up with EPRP, and that gets you 500 anytime minutes and unlimited mobile calling, as well as unlimited texting and GPS.
ATT doesn't even come close to that. It would cost at least $90 to get a somewhat similar plan, which is 50% more and comes out to $720 more than what you would pay with Sprint over the life of the contract.
@DR it's actually even cheaper if you get the Everything Data 450 plan and instead get a corporate discount... like if you get a Citigroup discount, that's 27% off, which makes the plan $51.09 before taxes.
Not that I'm suggesting claiming discounts you aren't entitled to, just something to look into.
There's actually like 68-70 apps in the app catalog. It just seems like they've stopped the tracking at 50 and probably will fix that when it comes out of beta. IMO
The new App Catalog fixes that, it's 70.
What the Pre should of been was a Iphone looking 3.5 screen with a Landscape keyboard. That would of been one sick hardware. The portrait keyboard killed the Pre.
Maybe for you. To me the lack of a hardware keyboard kills the iPhone. Different people have different needs.
