iTunes 9 breaking AirTunes connections?
Apple breaking support for third-party devices in iTunes may not have been all that unexpected, but you'd think it'd have support for its own products lined up before pushing a major update out the door -- especially something that it had already broken with the last major iTunes update. AirTunes users apparently aren't that lucky, however, as reports are now cropping up that iTunes 9 is breaking connections with the home audio streaming service left and right -- although at least a few people seem to be reporting only intermittent problems. No word from Apple itself just yet but, if the last go 'round is any indication, it should have a fix for the problem sooner or later. In the meantime, feel free to relay your tales of AirTunes woe in the comments.

Nothing here, everything still works a-ok
Same here. Just used it yesterday to entertain some guests, and it worked great.
Works here, smooth as a cat.
There was an AirPort Express update released a little while ago that probably improves compatibility with iTunes 9.
Both of my machines, a g5 on 10.5 and a MacBook Pro on 10.6 are working.
Some quick patch will probably be added that helps the peopl ---- HOLD UP!!!! BEYONCE HAD ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS EVER!!!!!
first time since 10.5.2 that mine has had reliable streaming beyond an hour. Snow Leopard and it9 FIXED my streaming.
are people with problems still on 10.5? 10.5 was craptastic on wireless, and would drop airtunes all the time.
WinXP, iTunes 9, connected straight to an n-wifi airport express (albeit on g class wifi) and all working fine. Not a problem so far.
Well I have problems with home sharing. It will cause my desktop to loose its IP for some reason :-/
Works fine here too.
Same here, works for me.
Yep, no problems with my AirPort Express and AirTunes here. Still been streaming to my Altec Lansing im600 speakers just fine.
iTunes 9 wreaks havoc with streaming to my apple tv and airtunes. Had to revert to plder version. I do like iTunes9 new look though, small things do indeed add up.
Nothing a $10 software update won't fix.
That's funny!
Funny indeed!
the noob thinks upgrades will only be $10...
Think different, think $20...
When has Apple charged for an upgrade to a base install application?
@duh
Looks like someone needs to go check the word "humor" in the dictionary...
Still working flawlessly for me. Airport Express on 5GHz band.
Never used airtunes and hadn't planned to. I hope cars and more A/V equiptment supports A2DP in the future.
Not a fan of A2DP as I've never been able to find anything based upon any version of Bluetooth that preserves the quality of the audio -- would love to find something that does.
I am using an Airport Express (802.11n 5Ghz mode) with optical adapter and it sounds great. Also, I am only using iTunes 9 with Snow Leopard 10.6.1, but so far I haven't experienced any issues.
I haven't noticed any problems with my Airtunes yet. I used my iPhone remote app with my APE and Hi-Fi and it worked fine yesterday.
i use airtunes since nearly 2 years, and it works very well for me... even with itunes 9. no problems at all.
Why the hell is m4rkus Highly Ranked?? I think it really sheds light on the itard mentality. No offense m4rkus, I'm glad you've not had any problems but it's just a fact, not some keen insight or clever double entendre.
I've got a very regular digestive track, never constipated. Do I get highly ranked now?? Maybe it has something to do with blind obedience instead? Weirdos.
Well I see your point there, but matter of fact is that it works for me. Thats all I said, thats how it is for me. No general message intended. :)
Maybe people voted positively bc airtunes works for them as well?
Ever since I installed snow leopard, my airport express hasn't worked with anything. Can't print wirelessly..can't play iTunes..
Fix this soon Apple!!
Which gen Airport Express do you have?
Have you reset and reconfigured the APEx from start?
windows isnt compatible with much of what apple types out at first... give it a week or two then go back to winamp
The only thing that is consistently making me rage at iTunes 9 is the change to the green minimise/maximise button.
Before, it would conveniently switch between the mini-player and the normal player. Now it expands the window to not-even fullscreen, and you're resorted to using a menu item or holding option while pressing the green button, and I only found out about THAT shortcut after googling to see if others shared my rage.
I am disappoint.
Hold alt/option key while you click the green plus sign...
YES! I'm so pissed about this, never before have I dealt with such a blatant bug. I hope they fix this soon.
I'm pretty sure it's not a bug. They're making it consistent with the rest of the OS and apps.
You could always become a fan of keyboard shortcuts and use Command-Shift-M...
this is my one bitch with itunes 9...i always keep mu itunes minimized, now i have to go into the "view" menu and select from the drop down menu...no big deal but a lame change.
@kinless
Whether or not it's a consistency thing, for this particular application it didn't make sense. It has been like this for YEARS. And I'm a designer, so I use shortcuts constantly, but hitting a three-key combo (and an awkward one at that, but maybe because I'm left-handed) compared to one click is just plain annoying. Learn to not assume so much just for the pure satisfaction of bashing someone.
@Dave B
I fail to see where he bashed you.
@Vidikron
Yeah, I see your point, guess I'm just really sensitive today... ;) Just used to reading things on here with a sarcastic voice in my head.
@Dave B
You're forgiven. Just this once. :) I don't make a habit of bashing people. That's not nice.
Anyway I'm one of those fools on the other side of the fence who got irritated because my Mac OS muscle memory kept trying to max iTunes real estate and I'd get the mini player instead. The other 95% of iTunes users are irritated because they've been used to the old way for so long. If it was made consistent from the get-go there'd be no complaints.
I'll agree with you on the keyboard shortcut however. Whether you're left- or right-handed, the combination is a little awkward without using two hands.
(Hmm, I better call out "That's what she said" before someone else does.)
Heh.
I'm GLAD for this change. I never, ever use the mini player. I just discovered like a week ago you can option-click the maximize button to get it to actually maximize, then iTunes 9 came out and fixed it for me.
You can still get your mini player with option-click... or the mini player shortcut!
I never understood why iTunes was allowed to behave differently. The maximize button SHOULD ALWAYS MAXIMIZE THE WINDOW, not unexpectedly turn the player into some gimpy little mini thing.
Since iTunes9 I've lost connection once. Never happened pre-iTunes9.
For me: Airtunes works for 30-45 minutes then craps out and I get an 'Unknown Error 15006' in iTunes. The only way to get iTunes to recognize my AX again is to reboot the AX. Unreal CF this iTunes 9 is turning out to be...
The only issue I've run into is audio cutting out a few seconds into a given track. But this had been going on since iTunes 8. One thing that worked for me was setting a specified channel for the Airport express (channel 1 in my case). By default I think it is set to automatic, and setting it to channel 1 got rid of all the cuts and drop outs. Songs play fine now.
btw, iTunes 9 is working perfectly these first few days for me - no crashing, it's FAST, and yes I do like the interface tweaks (for the most part). I am running a mid 09 mbp + SL so that might have something to do with it.
ive had no problems at all..running snow leopard and itunes 9......
Actually the opposite, was shoddy before, but since the update, it has been working better than ever.
BOSE SPEAKERS!!!
No wonder...
Working fine here with Gigabit Airport Extreme base and 2 Airport Express + 1 Apple TV on 5Ghz 802.11n network. Music in sync and sounds great just as before.
Keeps cutting out when streaming from Vista PC, everythings ok when streaming from Snow Leopard Mac...
Wow - People actually use airtunes?
My use is pretty simple. I just hooked up an iPod speaker setup via its aux-in to my AX so I can stream music to the bathroom, can listen in the shower. Maybe if I had decent speakers in my living room I'd use it there too.
I use the hell out of AirTunes. What's wrong with AirTunes? I have music streaming from my bedroom to my living room and kitchen. I hope to have every room hooked up one day. Bathroom, back porch, everything. It streams Apple Lossless and to my golden ears, it sounds great.
@ UnixSystemsEngineer
Aww, bathroom music. Engadget readers never seem to amaze me.
No problems here, MAC OS X 10.6.1 - iTunes 9, Last Gen Airport Express. 2 Separate MAC systems tested on and both Streams flawlessly ....
