Video: SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash card does 600x, the hokey pokey
Naw, it ain't the quickest CompactFlash card our eyes have ever seen, but it's certainly up there. SanDisk's new Extreme Pro CF line packs an impressive 600x rating, which is twice that of the Extreme IV CompactFlash card that it shipped right around this time last year. Available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavors, this unit promises 90MB/sec read and write performance, guaranteed operation at extreme temperatures and a thumbs-up from Chase Jarvis. Also introduced is the 8/16/32GB SanDisk Extreme, which features 60MB/sec of read and write performance (400x) while going a little easier on the wallet. Both families should be available any day now, with the Extreme gang ranging from $130 to $375 and the Extreme Pro crew starting at $300 and stopping at around $800. Oh, and if you're scouting an ExpressCard reader to handle the new speeds, the Extreme Pro ExpressCard Adapter will splash down next month for $49.99. Enthralling demo is after the break.

Wow these make traditional SSDs look affordable. Granted you can't cram one in a camera but $800 for 64GB, that's crazy talk.
lmao you could copy a gig in 11 seconds. thats filling it up in
This will greatly increase pigeon bandwidth.
it took me 5 seconds to realize what u mean, but then i loled xD
That was truly hilarious! thanks. Watching Valiant with my son this weekend helped, too.
Pigeons? Nah, a 3G network radio-controlled helicopter (with onboard cameras to see where you're going) with a 640gb notebook hard drive or two would get the job done WAY faster.
But I could always use one of those cards to make a 64gb iPod mini (I currently have a 32gb CF card in mine)
Pretec made 666x last year
What? Only available in Extreme Pro-editions? Pff, ill just wait for the Super Pro-edition...
Transcend has this 600x since August...
But only 8Gb and 16Gb...
Are cameras capable of this speed?
The newer DSLRs can take anywhere of 5 frames and up per second. Imagine a Nikon D3x taking that many frames, in RAW. You're talking 40 (or more) megabytes PER FRAME. Card speed has a long way to go still. Right now all DSLRs rely on buffer for longer bursts.
Can the current DSLRs keep up with the speed of this CF card ?
Simple answer is no. They may be able to dump their buffer quicker to these cards to improve performance slightly, but to truly utilize this new speed, the manufactures will need to revise at least their firmware, if not the camera mechanisms themselves.
This is going to be GREAT news to those RED camera users, and those who record HD, 2K and 4K video onto CF cards. There are so few CF cards that are rated to support RED's requirements, that this may just get approval out of the box.
This + 7D ... yes.
There's no way I would touch something that expensive. SanDisk has a higher failure rate than most solid state drive companies.
Yes, but the failure rate just hit at least 90 MB/S!
Which is why kids the CF card is still around...
