Wii getting $50 price drop this month? One Toys R Us ad seems to think so
Of all the fakeables in consumer electronics, the weekly newspaper ad has to be one of the easiest marks. Still, this one looks pretty legit, and if it's real it means either we're getting a much overdue Wii price cut on September 27th, or someone on the Toys R Us ad team has been severely misinformed. If it's not true and we have to wait another holiday season for the Wii to break the $200 mark, we're not getting Nintendo that Snuggie we promised it for Christmas -- everybody knows only good little boys, girls and multinational game companies get presents.

I'm wondering if the Wii might be too close to it's market saturation to enjoy the high sales it has had up to now without a $100 price cut. I don't know many people that want one that haven't gotten one yet since it's always been fairly affordable.
I remember when I got the N64 for $129.99 retail. Plus they had that awesome commercial with the guy working at some decrepit taco place, and then quitting as soon as he got his paycheck for $129.99. I was convinced they filmed it at Burrito Express in Pasadena, Ca. But it wasn't.
What about dropping the price of the remotes? $40 for the remote + $20 for the nun chuck + $20 for the MotionPlus = expensive.
Shh, that's how they print their money.
$50 price cut isn't anything....they need to just give them away for free because the wii is damn near worthless.
worthless as your comment ...
Give me back my avatar you thief! Never saw you on here before, don't make me steal your lunch money punk
As the owner of all three console systems, having purchased the Wii first, I agree that it is now overpriced. Our Wii has become the forgotten soldier, mainly because it's graphics are so limited and it doesn't do anything else other than games and being used by my wife for the Wiifit board. At least our PS3 gets a lot of use as another Blu-ray player and the 360's access to Netflix is great. Nintendo needs to either drop the price $100 to $149 or at $199 include at least 2 contollers and nunchucks, WiiSports Resort and another game.
why the hell would Nintendo drop the price $50? As long as these babies are selling like hotcakes and as long as people keep paying $250 for this piece of crap, then Nintendo will keep selling it at that. How much does it cost for Nintendo to make one of these, $50?
If you have been to Target, Toys R Us, Best Buy, or Walmart recently, you'll notice Wii's on the shelf, usually 10 to 15 of them at a store. Supply has begun to overwhelm demand.
Just wait for christmas...
I think the PS3 will be the hottest selling console this christmas.
Can I have a snuggie for Christmas, Engadget?
Even though I was an early adopter, I have been really disappointed in the Wii, and Nintendo's do-nothing attitude about title-lineage and core-gamer titles. I don't know how to quantify that, but I am somewhere between a core-gamer and a casual-player. The Wii has nothing to offer me but a gimmick, and very few titles that encourage me to purchase and play on the Wii itself, I spend almost all of my time now on the Xbox 360 or PS3.
There's also a sorry lack of many titles in the Wii downloadable-content section after all this time, it seems half complete -- and with the exception of a few gems, the utter crap thats available in wiiware and such is a pretty big let-down compared to what was promised.
Even though I've always been a die-hard nintendo fan, somehow, it seems like it was a waste of money to buy the wii when it was new, and to some degree, its still a waste of money even now, after the $50 price drop. Looking at the innards, I also wonder now about the $200+ price tag the unit has coasted on all this time (speaking as an engineer). They pushed the Wii out there with an almost mac-esque model for sale. All glitz, no real guts; relying entirely on hype. It's sort of sickening.
If you are disappointed in the Wii just Homebrew, you won't be disappointed.
Nintendo took a gamble with the "waggle" so to speak and it payed off. In fact it paid off so much that Sony and Microsoft are in fact chasing the same cash cow with their own take on motion play.
And I still wont buy one :)
Wow I've never seen so much wii haters lol. I feel bad for the guys who let their wii collect dust. The wii has alot of great games for the hardcore gamer. No more heroes, fire emblem, tales of symphonia, metroid prime, the conduit, come to mind. I also own a 360 and enjoy it. But I play my wii honestly the most. I would be willing to put money that half the posters here don't own a wii.
It's a fake. The only mention of "Nintendo" occurs at the bottom right corner. The Wiimote is an old press kit photo and is inconsistently lit.The Wiimote has no glove.Comparing with this weeks, the "12.99 value" on the right seems to be ut of place as the leading line.My last point is that, since whoever made this had nothing to base the word "cut" on, he failed to realize that with words that use variable casing (aside the first letter), ALL constansts use CAPS, unlike the "t" in "cut". A good rule of thum is that if part of a line is going to use variable casing, the rest will follow. The only exception I could find is the word "ALL" which is either a lead vowel, or a key word.
Can't wait for the day they just drop the whole .99 cents thing. I will gladly pay an extra penny so i can have it read $200.
And, Pat... You got WAY too much time on your hands there...
It'd be great if the Wii gets a price cut, but it's too late for me really, I already found a much better deal. Chances are most people interested in the console already have it, but here's a link to where I found it in case anyone wants to check it out: http://www.computersncs.com/rd_p?skipRedirect=1&p=191613&t=9544&a=18857-Wii&gift=22694
Trying to find things that don't fit the pattern... totally worth it. Some of the stuff doesn't hold up, but the lowercase t is so out of place. And "come see R huge Nintendo games" on the bottom right - genius.
Have you ever seen a toys r us ad before? They kinda use wacky font...
I took note of this weeks and spent some time trying find a pattern in the typeface and then comparing to what we have of this one. Seeing how its 's only a week or two, I won't be surprised either way. Find a recent ad and find an occurence where a consonant suddenly becomes lowercase.
