AT&T, Sprint, Verizon all signed up for WinMo 6.5 launches on October 6
Microsoft is saying that three of the US' big four carriers -- AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon, to be specific -- will be hitting the ground running with Windows Mobile 6.5 as part of its synchronized global launch on October 6. We've got to give Microsoft some credit on this one: launching a single device around the world on the same day is a feat in itself, but coordinating with countless manufacturers and carriers to get them to launch a bunch of different devices on the same day takes things to an entirely different level. Unfortunately, that's about all we know; hardware hasn't been unveiled, though we can safely guess that HTC will figure into the equation one way or another -- and we wouldn't be surprised to see something like LG's 20-key GW600 finally bow. What's everyone hoping to see out of these guys on day one?

Wake me up when Winmo7 is out... zzzzz....
Seriously. At present, WinMo is boooring!!
"wake me up, before Wi mo oh"
Yeah. With a slew of handset makers abandoning Windows Mobile, Microsoft is becoming
very desperate. WinMo is done regardless.
Isn't that Puzzles icon a KIRF of AVG's icon?
Troll much?

That's 6.5 running on my phone, (Titanium default in pic 1 and TF3D in pics 2 and 3).
UI wise, it blows the iPhone away. Far slicker in terms of aesthetics, and in terms of productivity, the WinMo homescreen (be it in Titanium or TF3D mode) once more shows just how lacking the iPhone and others are in terms of displaying meaningful information.
WM = a power user's OS.
iPhone OS = a toy with far too many limitations to even count
@WindowsFTW
Oh so it's catching up to Android :D
No troll here tho, looking forward to getting a 6.5 equipped phone for work, and keeping my G1 for personal.
Tho I may ditch the G1 for something else. Getting tired of it.
@WindowsFTW
WM = requires a power user to operate OS
FTFY
@windowsFTW Lol you just showed us you have at least 2 engadget accounts for down ranking people, how many more do you have Hamidxa? Your anecdotal proof of WM 6.5's superiorness is just as useless as the OS itself.
I agree with him. I want the Zune HD's OS on a phone, darn it!
Companies are dumping WinMo in droves for Android. Stick a fork in WinMo, it's done.
What kind of FUD is this 'manufacturers dumping Windows Mobile' meme? Unless HTC decides to ditch the OS, who really cares, because HTC is by far the number one maker of WinMo phones in sales (and arguably) in quality.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 is one of the devices. Samsung Omnia Pro and Omnia II are two other names that come to my mind.
I wonder if Palm will announce a new Treo Pro-like phone - or just an OS revision - or nothing.
ijit, Palm already announced a treo like phone. It is called the pixi.
Here's to hoping my Samsung Jack can gobble this WinMo6.5 up as soon as possible =)
Thud
I'm hoping to see something from Verizon that doesn't require an additional monthly payment to buy.
Since I know that's not going to happen, I hope to see something with a gorgeous and responsive OLED screen, non-sluggish operation and a slide out keyboard.
Yawn.
This is Exciting. Wimo 6.5 will easily be the 4th or 5th best mobile OS out. Congrats Microsoft!!
How many mobile OS out there? 4th or 5th means DEAD LAST! You meant
to say winmo is already dead?
/sarcasm
Wake me up when your iPhone multitasks.
And why is it that WinMo outsold:
- iPhone OS consistently, in 2007, 2008, and thus far in 2009
- WinMo also has outsold Android since its inception
http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=910112
You iTrolls really need to come out with something more original.
Hey jeff wake up.
@WindowsFTW yeah look at that growth winmo 7.8% iPhone 111% Seems odd doesnt it? Also, you are a total tool.
WindowsFTW, there's no info in there waying WinMo outsold iPhone in 2009. It only covers 2007 and 2008.
@Tsing Tao: It's harder to increase market growth when you're already in the lead... Learn some maths.
Tsing Tao
Last year I sold 2 apples, this year I sold 4 apples, my Y2Y growth was 100% (Apple)
Last year I sold 2000 oranges, this year I sold 2200 oranges, my Y2Y growth was 10% (Microsoft)
You are comparing apples to oranges and seem to have a very weak grasp of rudimentary mathematical constructs.
As pointed out, large growth rates are misleading in and of themselves, because if you already have a larger marketshare, then naturally your Y2Y growths will not be as large, as is the case for MS. MS's growth in the mobile phone sector also resembled an exponential curve at one point, but growth reaches a point where elasticity kicks in and the curve becomes more horizontal.
Open up a math book every once in a while...
@WindowsFTW That's funny, RIM's growth rate is pretty large and their market share is greater than winmo now. Maybe rim needs to open up this math book of yours too,
edu
Maybe you missed the part (multiple parts) where I have repeatedly acknowledged that fact.
Go ahead, click through my post history. :)
@WindowsFTW Your post history on WHICH of your 5 troll accounts?
@ windowsFTW
So If you have already acknowledged that RIM still has i high growth rate with it's large market share, why would you then say "if you already have a larger marketshare, then naturally your Y2Y growths will not be as large".
That is obviously not a true statement. Rim has proven that and you have acknowledged that.
How are you supposed to play Street Fighter 2 without the keyboard/pad? Would be interesting to see how this plays!
I'm wondering if that Street Fighter icon is photoshopped. It's hard enough to play on a controller. Unless they change the moves to jestures then it's impossible for a touch screen.
Umm...who said there's no keyboard on the device? Lots of Windows Mobile phones have keyboards you know, this isn't an iPhone.
You could pretty easily hold a Touch Pro2 in portrait mode or something and use the keyboard to play. Would not be optimal but would be about 100 times better than trying to play it without any keys.
Microsoft's WinMo team needs to take a few tips from their Zune team pronto.
Zune HD uses WinMo.
They teamed up about a year ago, it's taking time though.
PocketNow has some videos of recent builds, it's looking a lot less Win95 and a lot more.. XP. Still dated but with the recent changes to contacts, notification icons etc it's definitely showing improvement.
Not really sure who is running the WinMo show within MS but they really need to reconsider how they are going about things.
An update is long overdue to the point that people (ignorant they may be) assume WinMo is dead and OEMs are abandoning it.
They are releasing 6.5 but the version they are releasing has been on XDA since before summer. WinMo 6.5.1 looks more exciting but we are not getting that officially anytime soon.
Get 6.5.1 on the streets, have 7 available in the first half of next year like Balmer promised, and get your Apps and SDK in shape for all devices running 6.5 and 7 and that includes Zune HD.
Isn't WM 6.5 going to be the Windows ME of mobile OSes given that we've pretty much seen what it can do on XDA Dev ROMs and everyone's just waiting for WM7?
@why not the LS2LS7 that's kinda my point...streamline that shit!
Just want the HTC Leo out on Orange UK on October 6 please. Thank you. That is all.
They better drop it hear in the US...
*here*
Is it me, or does the puzzles logo look EXACTLY like the AVG logo?

Good news. I'll wait on my Smartphone purchase until I see how 6.5 lands. I especially to see the HTC Touch Pro 2 with WinMo 6.5 before deciding.
Versions are already available via XDA-Developers. Bought my Touch Diamond 2 and upgraded it the next day to WinMo 6.5 and I have to say its impressive, especially with TouchFlo 3D 2.5 - far better than 6.1.
No T-Mobile? Drats.
Good to finally see it being opened. Hopefully there's a lot of good apps available.
How about the Diamond 2 on Sprint
You guys really need to pick a different screenshot to show WinMo 6.5 - this is the second time you've used this. This is a screenshot of the marketplace, which is not even 6.5-specific - and it's a web page, not an OS screen.
I'm running WinMo 6.5 right now and it looks significantly better than this, just from a visual perspective. This is like showing a screenshot of the MS Office web site and saying it's Windows 7.
Expect nothing more from Engadget.
This is how WM looks:

Wow really a toy huh? Thats odd since i use it to admin many many computers. You are such a ridiculous tool, its just amazing. So did you switch to WindowsFTW cause your other account got banned for being such a d bag?
the GW600 is relevant to my interests
I just upgraded to an early 6.5 beta rom and I must say, its far ahead of 6.1. Everything in 6.1 is looks dated. 6.5 looks great and the new home screen works well. My AT&T contract expires this month, so I am waiting for Oct 6 to see what 6.5 brings to the table :D
Agreed.
6.5 is downright beautiful, at least the latest build is.
Titanium has replaced TF3D as my homescreen too, it's that good:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f15/Hamidxa/20090901_101029_0001_111g.jpg
It's practically like a Zune / Zune HD in terms of looks, at least on the Titanium homescreen menu...now they just need to adopt this look consistently throughout the OS.
AT&T contract expires in Oct? You must be a fellow Tilt user.
What am I hoping to see on day one?
Some love from T-Mobile, that's what.
Come on TMO, you were the first to have the TP2, so... what gives with WM 6.5?
The beautiful thing about WinMo is that you don't have to go through official channels to obtain anything.
Just head over to XDA-developers, grab yourself any ROM you want, flash it, and voila, you have WM 6.5, or even 6.5.1 if you so desire.
Maybe both people that are excited about this can write a review.
Probably going to go with a Crackberry in April when I can renew. As much as I like using Winmo phones (xv6800 6.1 ATM), I can' t justify upgrading to another facelift. I'll evaluate 7 when it comes out, and 'maybe' move back to Winmo in 2012 when I eligible to upgrade again.
Windows Mobile is an anachronism. The OS belongs to 2002. I feel sorry for anyone who buys it in 2009.
I feel sorry for someone who can "review" a product that (1) they freely admit they don't use; (2) isn't even out yet; and (3) feels the need to try and feel superior by commenting about it.
I would like to be surprised with the announcement of a Tegra based phone....preferably the HTC Superstar.....
Looks like I'm headed to a corp store to see if they'll let me upgrade early to a TP2/Tilt2. Do Premier customers still get upgrades every 6 months?
WVGA TF3D 2.5/2.6 + WinMo 6.5....do want, even if it is the same crappy 528 MHz Qualcomm in there.
How is it that blackberry keeps getting away with NEVER EVER updating their UI one bit and everyone calls each new blackberry revolutionary, while WinMo is chastized even when they update their UI evry few years, and have a variety of phone manufacturers who consistently come up with new UIs to sit on top of winmo? Answer me that!!!
is Verizon holding back the HTC TOUCH PRO 2 in stores (available only via online order) because it is putting WinMo 6.5 on them??
