Haiku Alpha 1 available now: BeOS lovers of the world rejoice

A mere eight years in the making, the Haiku Project has announced the release of Haiku R1/Alpha 1, the first official development release of the low footprint open source OS formerly known as OpenBeOS. Since it's an alpha release, you'll be expected to do your part identifying bugs and reporting glitches and the like -- but here's hoping that they at least got Firefox to run in relative stability this time 'round. We know you're too damned giddy at the prospect of installing this thing on your netbook for any more of our prattle, so why don't you just hit the read link and get started, then?

Ah, this is really beautiful. Definitely brings a tear to my eye as an old BeOS developer dabbler. I've still got a BeBox that one of the guys and Be sent me back in the day.
sounds too much like OpenBS.
haikus are pretty
but sometimes they don't make sense
refrigerator
Well this is random.
I actually liked BeOS back in the day, but it was a bit too buggy back then to stick with (at least with the hardware I had)
I remember times back in the days when the OS/2 and the BEOS, the boss of the internet, and the windows95 and the SGI and the apple 7s or 8s, these were a time of many OSes but most people still used the windows. others used the other ones when they wanted to think diffrent, but most of them went away to the wayside. me im a type of people that likes to use the most supported device out there, that way it can last the longest and be the most used, is it the safest? maybe not, but i don't really see any major dangers at the same time more or less then using something else, but for awhile i tried to use the other guys stuff and in the end I just got more and more and more mad that the things i once did with ease couldn't be done so easy anymore, but lets see what happens with the beoses and see if they can take the next generation of computational computing needs to the level of that the human mind, my mind, your mind, we all share the minds of a species, don't you think?
Wow. Your handle couldn't be more fitting. Just... wow.
Ok, give us your best Engadget related haiku... GO:

Our new Haiku overlords.
Can it run Crysis?
Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don't make sense
Refrigerator
it would be fun if like Dell would pick this up and began to fiddle with it in secrecy before unleashing their own OS on to the world... oh well
I saw this incredible demo video of BeOS, produced like 15 years ago.

Still blows me away. That's some amazing multitasking for a machine running Pentium II's (around min 16).
And people are excited by Windows 7's "speed".
Speed never excited me much. Sure, while it's all zoom and buzz it seems fun but it's dirty and the come down is yuck.
I was impressed by Windows 7 ability to run more than 3 applications at once on netbook hardware personally...
That is really impressing.
Especially the fact that it plays two videos (which from what you can see in google video have at least ok quality) and tv at the same time. If you look at windows and osx now this is still really impressive.
If i had a PC around that i wouldnt need all the time, i would totally give haiku a trial!
Used to enjoy running BeOS on my PC and Mac hardware, shame I had no apps though.
Netbooks, that's an interesting use for the tech. Still need apps though.
Yeah, I booted BeOS for a few days on a system I had back in the late 90s. It was one of those "cool! .... okay, now what do I do with it?" moments.
I am not sure the world needs another same-same OS. If you are going to develop a new operating system, how about redefining the way we use OSes? Create a new paradigm.
This will run great on the new Hello Kitty nettop I just ordered. Thanks Engadet!!!!!!

World's worst background music ever... WTF was the point of that video?
it could have been interesting if they released it 10 years ago. too late to worth bothering.
Yes, if they'd released it 2 years before starting it, it certainly would have been impressive.
Finally, I can test out the "Batmobile" of operating systems on my own hardware....

They have a long road ahead of them to prove that they aren't vaporware. Why should I care about this opposed to Ubuntu, Xubuntu or Chrome OS? All three of those run well on low end systems especially notebooks
Epic fail
I remember running a BeOS theme with Kaleidoscope on OS 9 :)
No thanks engadget im doing just fine with windows 7 and OSX snow leper
Dude, you're so going down...
down town?
It's way too Mac OS-y to my tastes...
OS 9 maybe
Earlier than that actually... :)
Ah, BeOS... What could have been...
Yeah, I can imagine all my VFX/CGI apps running on BeOS more effectively and faster. But mainly MULTITHREADED!
You wouldn't believe... :/
...a few years too late here. They shoulda just made beos opensource after palm bought them out, obviously they didnt do shit with the code.
I definately liked Beos when it was towards its end.
The look of these OS screams 1995, overhaul the gui--this makes xfce look like it came from the future.
I loved BeOS in late 90s but now the gui is outdated. In the Windows 98 years it was exceptional, I used R5 until 2001 when I finally dropped for lack of cd burning and divx support.
This was news... two days ago.
