HTC Leo caught on video demonstrating its multitouch display

There's been plenty of rumor and speculation regarding the HTC Leo as of late, all serving to pique our interest. If talk of a Snapdragon CPU and an updated TouchFlow 3D UI are not, in fact, greatly exaggerated, it looks like we might have a killer phone on our hands here. And now, to fill in the picture a bit, the kids at PocketPT have helped us to a demonstration of the device's multitouch capabilities. Exciting, no? Make sure you check out the video below, which shows the Leo flipping through photo albums and zooming in / out of stills and video the with style and ease befitting a 1GHz processor. You'll be glad you did.

Give it Android, HTC!
Wheres the Zune HD review?
here:
http://www.wmexperts.com/hands-zune-hd-part-1
1. I don't give a f*** about ur comments about multitouch.. what do u use multitouch for?? zooming in on Google Maps?? what else?
2. No.. we don't want Android on this. Thank you.
3. Get another place to dispute your MMS issues.
Looking forward the HTC Leo.. seriously it has a lot of potential!!
@beckham
1. Whatever you think about multitouch, it's a nice to have thing. Try it out sometime.
2. Speak for yourself. It appears that coolbho and I, at the very least, do want Android on this thing.
3. You might be right on that ;).
Why does it need Android? WinMo 6.5 is already great.
Multi-touch is the most overhyped tech in the past few years. One finger zooming is easy enough.
I agree that multi-touch is a nice feature to have included but if the hardware/software cost is more than $5 I wouldn't want it.
Pika2000 & others...
WM does support capactive and multi-touch and pretty much anything else you want... you just need to add the driver for it.
I really can't believe the stupidity of some people that say WM can't do this or that. Add the hardware and the driver... and its supported. Thats what so good about WM.
Its like saying Windows 7 doesn't support a mouse. Well obviously it does but it just needs to add a mouse driver and ta da! :-)
Fun fact:
Did you know that over 85% of the people that piss on Windows Mobile have never tried/owned it before?
Real Fact:
Over 90% of Windows users have never tried or owned Mac.
I too want to see the ZuneHD Review. So, whenever you can get around to it, Engadget. kthx :)
The Leo is one nice looking piece of hardware. My TP2 is jealous of it's screen
@Real Fact: umm.. nobody was talking about apple (this time), so...
@coolbho and maddy: I love me some Android, and I love me some WM. WM6.5 looks awesome, but so does the Hero (more due to HTC's "sense" UI than Android itself though). Having a choice of OS independent of the handset would be an interesting idea...
@MegaJapan: What gets me about this is that I actually had a TMO rep tell me they preferred Android to WM because they "didn't want to work so hard to use their phone."
WTH? It will take a bit to use all of a smartphone's features regardless of the platform - If that's 'work' for you and not fun then a smartphone's not for you, get a featurephone.
oh, and btw the zoom slider on the TP2 works just as well as any multitouch pinch and zoom does. Though I guess it is cooler to make that gesture? Where multitouch really wins is on things with larger screens, like the Microsoft Surface (and the Leo?).
/rant
@Mega-Japan - want to buy my phone since you love WinMo so much? ... cheap!
Yeah, waiting for the Zune HD review too :-) Perhaps the Zune HD is that good they got distracted playing with it and forgot to write the review.
Gizmodo reckon the web browser is sweet, would like to see a video of it in action.
Oh and, yay for multi-touch and Snapdragon.
2 1/2 years after the iPhone showed how multitouch works, other manufacturers finally catch up. Worth a "breaking news"...
If i was not mistaken, I think it was mainly because of patent/licensing issue.
I just hope this thing suppose US 3G band.
Thank you for reminding us that it will take 10 years for other manufacturers to catch up with Apple's and some of their users' smugness.
7 years after almost every phone manufacturer showed how MMS works, Apple finally... wait nevermind, MMS still doesn't work on the iPhone.
ahh-booo-yahhhh
Yes Man
screw multitouch! i'll take the circular gesture in HTC's album or the press and slide technique on the Omnia 2 any day. why would i want to use two hands when i could use one???
This is news because Winmo 6.5 and older do not support capacitive nor multi-touch natively. Kudos to HTC for doing this, although since it's not a native support by the OS, other apps probably won't benefit from it.
MMS does work on the iPhone... It might not work in the US (because of ATT) but elsewhere it works just fine. but I agree it should have been there first day.
wait, the news was not about the iPhone...WTF, why does everything always have to come back to the iPhone... and why am I even commenting about a comment on the iPhone... sigh
Pika2000,
That's where you would be WRONG my friend ;-)
"Much has been said about the new HTC LEO and if this is really Display Capacitive or not, a fact that can demystify Pocketpt through the video that you leave.
LEO The HTC screen is capacitive, it is possible to zoom with "two fingers" in the images, videos, the browser (Opera), the mail and even other programs. For example a GPS software, Zoom does the whole program (not the map) decreasing or increasing inclusive bars Top and bottom.
For those who had doubts about the ability of Windows Mobile 6.5 support "MultiTouch" I think they are beginning to be completely undone, and the LEO is still support for what is currently called the "WM7 Chassis"
So, there you have it.
Straight from the source of this video via Google Translator.
With a bunch of handset makers jumping ship from Windows Mobile, it is fair to say
Windows Mobile has become MS DOS of the past. Sure, MS will try to catch up
but the Windows Mobile install base is shrinking much faster than anyone can
imagine.
What took so long for MS to copy multi-touch? What's wrong with their
copy machine?
Actually check your timelines... Sure Apple were the first mobile device to have multi-touch, by the big ass table... I mean Surface predates it (2001), although Surface and iPhone were both 'out' in 2007. Also, Apple actually did a Microsoft and just bought a company to get the multi-touch tech (Fingerworks, 2005).
Do Apple innovate? Yes. Do they also over hyper things they didn't really do for themselves? Yes. Oh, and both of these points are actually true for any successful company. Apple just have an overblown 2 hour press conference to release a new mp3 player, service pack and oh, an updated larger mp3 player. Everyone else makes do with a press release.
Windows Mobile is finally starting to get the hardware it needs!
Finally! People will finally realize that WM is not slow and its the crap hardware it has been put on.
You're killing me. ;) IE browser with Tegra still couldn't match Safari on iPod Touch.
Your argument is bogus. Windows Mobile has already demised I'm afraid.
Support*
I was about to get the Touch Pro 2, now this comes out. How long do i have to wait?
Forever. Chances are this won't make it to the states.
Unless you live in Europe of course.
Oh hell yeah, capacitive...
nope, i think it's resistive:
http://pocketnow.com/rumor/the-leo-may-not-have-a-capacitive-screen-after-all
We'll have to wait and see what the end product will have...
I'm hoping for capacitive tho...
It's a capacitive screen. Multitouch is not possible on a resistive screen.
@Jeremy W:
get some knowledge posting...please!
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/stantums-mind-blowing-multitouch-interface-on-video/
Oh hell yeah it's capacitive!

Not sure if it's my english or Engadget's. I always thought "pique" meant to cause anger/resentment. So how have the rumors piqued your interest Flatley? Of course, engadget has less than a stellar record with the language...
pique (pk)
n.
A state of vexation caused by a perceived slight or indignity; a feeling of wounded pride.
tr.v. piqued, piqu·ing, piques
1. To cause to feel resentment or indignation.
2. To provoke; arouse: The portrait piqued her curiosity.
Pique is a French word that means sting. Or stolen (piquer)
HELL YES!
This is basically the perfect sized device, for me. GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE!!!!!!
I'm not keen on WM, but I'd give it a try, with a hardware set like this.
its about time they made an awsome WM phone
So are many Engadget commenters still going to deny that iPhone has actually made an impact on the industry or is it still cool to vote down every comment that says iPhone even when it's valid?
Won't hold my breath.
I don't think anyone(well, most) would say that. For my part at least, all I've said is that it's ridiculous to claim that everyone else is copying Apple, as many people have been claiming on any article about Windows Mobile/Palm/Zune/whatever else isn't made by Apple.
I don't think jonathan ever meant that everybody is trying to copy Apple. All he means is that Apple did show the world a revolutionary new and very easy way to interact with mobile phones. And I don't think anybody can deny that.
If you do, just think about 5 years of WinMo "innovation" before iPhone's release and just extrapolate it for 3 more years and think about the scenario had Apple never released the iPhone.
@slamEvil the same question can be applied to why people would want to use a stylus but many still do...it's just what works for you.
well, not to bring up an argument, but no. it's not about working for me vs. someone else. try doing this multitouch pinching motion with one hand...it doesn't work i don't care who you are. and by "on hand" i mean holding the phone in your hand and zooming, not setting it on the counter.
@slamEVIL: I just tried it on my zune hd. It's admittedly difficult but possible. hold the player/phone with your pinky, ring, and middle finger and use your index finger and thumb to zoom in/out. Not something I'd ever actually use but it does work.
Yes but you're assuming that everyone is bothered the way you are. There's double tap for the one handed solution.
