New iPod touch gets a speed test, zips right on by

The new generation of the iPod touch, we've been told, is roughly 50 percent faster than the previous iteration. Well, the fine folks over at the iPhone Blog have done a bit of information collecting on just that topic -- to see if Apple's latest is actually that much faster. Macworld did testing which showed a reduction in boot times from 31 to 19 seconds, web page loading (using the New York Times) went from 34 to 15 seconds, while app launching saw time reductions across the board. So -- in essence -- yes, the newest iPod touch is about 50 percent faster than the previous model in terms of performance. Nothing we didn't expect after the 3GS... Anythings else interesting?
lol Hardly 3rd genration stuff. ¬_¬
It beats the heck out of Tegra based IE browser. Is that what you want to hear?
Is that interesting enough?
@ Olay
you and a whole lot of other trolls need to get this through your heads: NOBODY cares about the processor in a PMP.
WALKMAN FTW.
Engadget users love to read specs. It's NOBODY in the real world that cares about that sort of crap. Nothing like running up to a salesperson asking for the PMP with the 1GHz Snapdragon or ARM Cortex-8 processor. Nothing but blank stares will follow and not a soul will be impressed by your knowledge.
Yeah, the Zune HD. Sorry had to do it.
Still it´s missing a little circle on it´s shinny back.
How does this compare to iPhone 3GS... is it the same?
That's what I was wondering. Is the performance identical to the 3GS?
It should be an insignificantly small amount faster actually, as the processor is a couple (unpublicized) models ahead numerically. So like... 10mhz faster or something stupid :p
The CPU is labeled as slightly newer model number but it and the GPU are likely the same speed as the 3GS. The old Touch with the same CPU and GPU as the 3G was faster. Besides having the clock speed turned up higher the Touch has less software to run since it’s not a phone. It should beat any iPhone to date in performance.
Well, if all my 2g accessories work with it, I may be tempted (looks like it is the same case)
Speaking as someone who bought the 64 gig the moment I could (Within 5 minutes of the store coming back up during the event) I can tell you that the 2g accessories seem to work fine, the form factor isn't any different, nor does it seem to complain about the connectors.
It's replacing my old 5th gen video, and I inherited old accessories from my sister whom has a 16g.
I'd determined from the first time I saw the 8gig original that when the size surpassed what I already had, I'd get one, so bam.
I could care less...
You cared enough to post.
Yeah, no Oled no deal. Get with the times Apple....
Well.... you cared enough to post a comment.
*sigh*

I still respect him for his opinion
I am over this apple craze
(this message was sent using a zune HD)
You do CARE if you're a gamer! Even if you are not, all apps (e.g Safari, Mail, Social apps, etc.)
on iPod Touch will run much faster.
@Argot
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/09/14/from_oled_to_tegra_five_myths_of_the_zune_hd.html
I haven't handled a ZuneHD yet, but look forward to giving it a run through. So far, though...that OLED isn't living up to all the expectations (solely from what I've read online and a couple of friends that picked one up...and some who returned it...)
All these replies and no one pointed out that the term is “I couldn’t care less.”
Argot, your link is full of fanboy excrement.
Actually, you "couldn't" care less. If you could care less, then you still have a ways to go until you are out of care.
I could care.. more?
@Tropf: You're linking to an appleinsider article about the zune hd? Hmm, I bet that's not biased at all. Try the wikipedia article on OLED. By the way, from using my 32GB and using it in blaring sunlight, problems with glare and such are no worse than on an LCD. The screen itself seems to not be very reflective, meaning you don't end up losing anything. The only problem is glare from the glass, which is an equal problem on the iPod Touch/any other player with a glass screen. When you're not in intense sunlight(can still be well lit, just not holding it so it's reflecting the sun straight into your eyes) it looks infinitely better than any player I've ever seen.
Perhaps he genuinely means that he COULD care less, rather than the more usual "couldn't care less". After all, if he "couldn't care less" he would not have posted at all would he?
Guz: Now, frankly that's the one that bothers me: why do people say I could care less when they really mean, I couldn't care less!? (from Psych, season 3)
English is a foreign language to me and frankly, I never understood that saying. I mean, that's the _opposite_ of what the person actually wants to say! If the sentence was too long, there would be words in it that would be less important (and longer). But the word "not" is the key word of the whole phrase, since it negates the sentence and therefore determines its meaning. The mysteries of life...
That AppleInsider article is pure vitriol and should not be taken serious by anyone comparing these products.
The writer goes out of their way to try and slam the Zune HD, spewing a lot of bullshit that is, atleast in part, patently false.
The part about Windows CE being a joke in the "industry" and saying of Windows Mobile: " Given its dismal performance in the market over the last decade, that reputation is well earned." is pretty fscking hilarious given there are far more WinMo phones sold than iPhones (AND THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS, RIGHT APPLITES? Better doesn't matter, just "Market Share" AMIRITE?!?!)
Disclaimer:
I would never own a WinMo phone for personal use, and will be trading in my G1 for an iPhone soon.
Just wanted to make that known lmao
He said he COULD care less. Not that he couldn't care less. Those people didn't actually care enough to post.
So, he could care less, obviously. If he couldn't care less, he wouldn't be posting.
On the other hand, I couldn't care less about this iPod Touch, but I couldn't care more about twisted semantics angry posts.
I prefer pie to cake
The cake is a pie!
No, Godzilla breathed fire... at&t breathes lies about how much better its 3g is than everyone elses
Sent from my iPhone
I compared a 3rd gen 32 gb ipod touch, next to my 32 gb iphone 3gs and the touch was definitely a bit faster when loading applications.
Lies!
no lies, side by side it loaded apps faster, but not by much
so thats your solution to multitasking huh? lol
having more than 1 iphone is not very practical for the rest of us
But! Does your shiny iPod touch come with AT&T's stellar service and awesome 2 year contract? HA! I didn't think so...
lol.. jk.. this is disappointing to hear considering I just picked up a 3GS.
@Mr Blue
You're supposed to be SELLING the iPhone. Not making folks want to walk away, LMAO.
Just say it's with a 'carrier', ATT will just make folks scream and run like Godzilla.
Next year iphone HD, ipod touch HD? Camera and 720p HD output
I think it would be good to get HD video output. Not all users require a fancy media center PC or Mac to occasionally watch movies or listen to music from TV and A/V receiver in their digital living room. This is also a good tip for those traveling frequently and staying at hotels or temporarily staying out of town:

iPhone 3GHDs??
@Engadgetier
That might imply they are capable of straightening hair...they've got the heat part sorted
@DR House
Haven't you heard? Cameras are a bag of hurt.

Nice avatar
When N97 and 5800 get firmware updates that add better kinetic scrolling, faster clock speed on processors, and more friendly UI, they go un-noticed by Engadget.
I'm starting to thing Apple pays you for this stuff.....
They gave the n900 some decent enough coverage through. I'm pretty confident I will get one of those over the new Touch, but I'll have to wait a while after they both come out to be sure.
Some people just can not be satisfied. I'm FAR from liking Apple. But they did a WHOLE coverage on Android/Motorola, Palm Pixe, Zune HD, Hero...other things besides Apple products.
It seems some people only pay attention to the things they want to complain about.
Basic human nature.
