Maybe it's a byproduct of the phosphorescent Disney babysitter that raised us, but it's near impossible to look at Sony's Walkman players and not think whimsically of Mickey Mouse. An unfortunate emotional response to otherwise very serious competitors for your portable audio dollar. Joining the S-series are the new S640 and
S740 Walkmen officially unveiled today in Japan. Both feature 2-inch LCDs, 720x480 TV-out, and the same quality MDR-EX300SL earbuds shipping with the
better-speced A840. The S740 (8GB/16GB/32GB) brings noise cancellation while the S640 (8GB/16GB) saddles your brain with ambient noise filtration. Shipping later this month in prices ranging from ¥16,000 (about $155) to ¥25,000 (about $277). The promotional video after the break featuring an overly expressive teenager is, however, free.

Disney.. or No Disney.. they actually look quite awesome...
They look absolutely brilliant. It is wicked to see these priced the same as the Nano, making the ultra high specked a840 more reasonable at its price. Personally i would be happier to pay the premium for the 2.8 inch ultra thin device with 64GB... TV-Out in both is brilliant. Of course their are some limits:
"For movies, the usual AVC (H2.64), MPEG-4 and WMV are allowed.".. (perhaps this is extended for the a840, i am not sure)
Other excellent features from the read links include:
- About 42 hours music. The video is approximately 10 hours of continuous play
- PS3 connection, you can transfer your videos/music over.
and quite possibly this:
- また、9型液晶を搭載しながら価格を抑えたというモデルや (but don't quote me on it being groundbreaking)
I wonder how long before the Disney IP nazis go after this one...
Wouldn't it be a shame if this guys inbox got full of notifications of relies.
"think whimsically of Mickey Mouse"... Mmmm I think it looks more like a pig's face...
Pigs are cute.
I think the black, white and the champagne versions look great.
32GB, Video out, Noise cancelling...
I love Sony Walkman!
And I love those nice japanese Women :-)
Tripping on the finish line? SE seems to have forgotten the not only 14-18 y/olds buy mobiles and that everyone else is content with a silvery grey one.
Give us 30 something people with money and a taste for glamour something to play with as well, we're the ones paying for the whole schabang anyway. Champagne, graphite grey, something like that...
Or we'll all buy iPhones!
just through you may want to know we are not talking about Sony Ericsson here, nor are we even talking about phones.
SE Satio/Aino/Xperia/T700 are the best regardless.
Not only did you not read the article, you didn't even look at the picture properly....
OMG, you're totally right. This is what happens when you read blogs before the first cup of coffee in the morning (I'm on CET).
Sorry!
You, sir, are a moron. Look at the photo.
You, sir, are equally a moron. Read my last comment.
But on the topic of SE- the classiest SE phones I've seen are the Japan-only ones. Want something professional-looking? A black SO906i does the job perfectly. Want classy looks and Walkman features? The older, cheaper SO905i is better suited to that.
Yo Sony.. I'm really happy for you - I'll let you finish - but the iPod Touch is one of the greatest game machines of all time!
well they do look good! even Mini Mouse edition
No ones telling u to do anything yo! stick to ur crap, but keep the comments relevant to the post!
Hello from Tokyo! I am so buying it - small size, 32GB, stellar SQ, FM, easy UI and for once, they're not overpriced. The only thing is, those Mickey buttons are a bit uneasy, compared to the previous S ones - I tried them yesterday in Currys and didn't like them at all
plus, those colours are a tad too flashy - I'm getting a plain black one
Why asian girls are so hot?!
Looks more like a pigs face then the Mickey Mouse head. (proportionaly speaking of course :-) )
Japanese advertising makes me feel dirty.
Don't worry, all feelings of dirtyness are negated if you weep uncontrollably while rubbing yourself raw... wait, where was I going with this?
Not everyone likes mickey mouse.
I think these Walkmans offer a neat alternative design to iPod nanos - although I'm still sticking with my Nano - this seems like a good product
Disney lawsuit in 3..2..1... do these new Sony walkmen have decent software for managing music, video, netcasts, etc.? I haven't used a Sony portable since my minidisc players I loved the MD format!). But when Sony added mp3 for minidisc, their software was horrible.
Apple finally has a nice management interface in iTunes. It finally works well on Windows machines. If Sony has something comparable, I might be interested.
This is Japan only units. They use Sonicstage 5 and drag-n-drop.
Oh Toodles!
These walkman's look very decent, GJ Sony!
WOW! The advertisement shows that the mp3 player can literally encode the songs from the CD's DIRECTLY into the player! That's a first for any mp3 player!
Too bad it's currently only for the Japanese market (though some Japanese online stores will export them but the price is high due primarily to the high Yen valuation and shipping costs) and it's only in Japanese!
Japanese versions still uses Sonic Stage (i.e. ATRAC format only in Japan) or drag n drop.
You'll need to find and/or buy 3rd party media software to rip music, edit files and/or create playlists!
Sony makes good hardware but historically makes TERRIBLE software, if any! It can't make software to save itself!
Too bad since the new players look great, even if it has NO truly usable software and has the mickey mouse-type ear buttons.
I'd still consider buying this primarily for the 32g/64g capacity versions esp. the speaker versions!
