Windows 7 has inspired an expected new model bonanza among PC manufacturers, and ASUS is no exception. Just for starters the new UL80 (pictured running Windows Vista) and
N61Vg offer up some "mainstream" prices and performance up against that Win 7 hotness. The UL80 makes like a thin and light, with a new dual-core CULV SU7300 processor and a quoted 12 hours of battery life, but also works in switchable discreet graphics, Turbo33 tech for selective overclocking the processor, and a disc drive. It's still relatively thin and light, and to our eyes has a pretty snazzy display. The N61Vg has a bit of a new design language for ASUS, with a pleasant rubberized palm rest. It also has a multi-touch trackpad, strong multimedia features and a decent size / weight for a 16-inch Core 2 Quad machine. The
existing UL80 configuration, without the overclocking, goes for about $849, so we expect the new UL80 to be in that ballpark, while the N61Vg is slated for around $1,049.
DISCRETE graphics, unless you're having an affair with them and they're good at not telling your wife.
Can we get a lower Lowest Ranked? Maybe call it Oblivion or something. I want my down rank to "count"
Previous post meant for macjonny
@macjonny, don't you have an awards show somewhere to ruin?

Can all of the computer companies please making laptops with piano black hand rests?
I'm sure there was supposed to be a 'Stop' in there somewhere. Stop making laptops glossy, it looks good until you touch it or it gets a little bit dusty.
I'll buy the UL80 , if they have solved the keyboard issue.
Why don't companies realize that a simple backlight for the keyboard is not all that expensive to integrate and that it ups the class immensely? I may just be spoiled, but I will never buy another laptop without a back-lit keyboard.
Lol I almost... completely agree with the back-lit keyboard thing. Definitely up's its class.
I've just never used it like ever... in that dark I just type blindly lol. The only buttons I kind of mishit frequently are the audio controls...
a backlight keyboard would be cool but i tried ul50 at a local store. Keyboard was really bendy, most keyboards bend to a degree but this was really terrible. If they didn't solve this problem, simply this is a great notebook ruined by a terrible keyboard.
Exactly which quad are we talking here? If it's a Q9000 I'm not overly keen on the thing, but a Q9100 and this is going in my cart ASAP. Could also use some GPU info.
Check out the gallery, there's a shot of the breakdown sticker, NV GT 220M with 1G RAM.
that trackpad doesn't exactly make one too envious.
Everyone loves copying the MacBook and MacBook Pro's keyboard.
including Apple itself. Cause that keyboard type belongs to sony ,not apple.
Hey, what is the best multimedia/gaming laptop with and intel core 2 for under $2000. I was thinking of buying an apple this christmas and installing windows 7( the 15 or 17); But I don't know if the imac pro will work good with pro-engineer software. ( I am a mech eng. student.) Any advice will be aprreciated.
At $2000, VAIO Z-series and ASUS G-series are really good. Those are probably the highest quality for the pricetags as far as I know.
So the UL80 is 14'' laptop. Would you guys say it beats or is better then the N81Vp-D1 14''??? Graphics? Battery life I know is better.
I have that GPU in my F50sf right now (gt220m), its a goodie. I've only used it to play team fortress 2 but it works like a charm (everythings on high, runs fine)
UL80 makes me think my EEE 1005HA. The design is stuning. I like these new mouse pad with small dots, it gives a nice feeling and no durty circle. The UL80 would be the perfect machine for me if I had to buy one right now.
That's a UL80V, not a UL80. UL80 is the one without discrete graphics.
Thought you guys would be interested in a UL80 giveaway contest hosted by ASUS on their YouTube channel:
