ITG's Windows XP-loving xpPhone now accepting pre-orders worldwide
It's been awhile since we last saw the xpPhone, a quick, quiet demonstration at Computex that left us doubting whether the thing would ever see the light of day outside a packed showroom floor. It seems our doubts are about to be put to rest as ITG, creator of the thing, has thrown up a pre-order page on the phone's website. There's no mention of a price, and indeed you won't be asked to plunk down any cash right now (it's not much of a pre-order), but what's interesting is that it asks you to choose between 3G modules for Vodafone, Orange, or AT&T. That means ITG seemingly has aspirations of a global release for this thing, and while we're not sure how many people are going to want to lug around a MID-sized monster celly with a "super big" 4.8-inch LCD and a weight of nearly a pound, surely some nation in the world has pockets big enough for this.

Umm......I'll take one! kickass....
I'll have one as well, minus tomatoes.
Kickass would be Windows 7 on a phone
How about the battery?? It would have to be charged 3 times a day!!!!
AlCapa: The Read link says that it's rated for 5 days on standby - that is, Windows running, just not on a call. 5 hours talk time.
@RoboDan
I would not be surprised that a few hacks would allow users to install any x86 OS on it (well, except Leopard, that would require more than a few). Is is, after all, "The World First Breakthrough".
Also announcing the worlds smallest bluetooth headset? Or is that thing really the size of a netbook?
sounds like defunct dualcor clone
I'm just glad that the headphone jack supports over 500 types of video and audio - my last headphones refused to play MP3 and WAV files...
ill take 2..and are the tomatoes of the lead-free variety?
Can you say OQO?
"okko" ?
No, I cant say that...
yes i can say OQ .. O OQ OOO
Damn it how did you know!
I suppose if you think about it as a UMPC, it doesn't seem bad. It would be barely tolerable to carry it around every day as your primary phone though.
Totally. That keyboard would be totally unusable. Most laptops don't even come with number pads. If they've got the space to put one on this, the keys must be microscopic.
Besides, whilst XP is a good desktop OS, I have serious doubts that it'll be as good a mobile OS.
I did some calculations, and if the screen diagonal is really 4.8", then the dimensions are roughly 6.86"x2.98"x0.69". That's almost the size of the OQO Model2! It's a bit thinner but much longer, albeit a lot less thick. The OQO is 18.5 cubic in while the xpPhone is 14.1 cubic in. No wonder they didn't list the dimensions on the specs page!
Here is the size comparison with the OQO and iPhone. Have you ever had an iPhone in your pocket? Pretty much pushes the limit of what is "pocketable", right? Now check out that Sizeasy and just imagine...

Just get bigger pockets. Normal clothing isn't designed for real phones anyway, so I have pants made with a dedicated phone pocket. Works great, keeps any phone scratch-free, and if sized properly it's almost impossible for it to slip out accidentally.
But I carry a manbag so this would be ok for me.... Somehow this comment I just wrote seems a bit gay.
@ruben
That's ridiculous. The problem is the size of the device, not where to put it. Getting bigger pockets isn't gonna make it any smaller. If a laptop is too big, the solution isn't "get a bigger laptop bag".
@tonicboy:
The problem is not the size of the device. Unless they find a way to magically put a 5" screen in a 2" that's what will happen. If you look at this device as a phone which just happens to have a full desktop OS running, then it might be seen as large. If they had marketed it as a bloody small laptop running a full OS -- which just happens to also make calls -- then it's suddenly not so problematic. Perception.
Yeah, it puts me in mind of the OQOs, too. Since OQO went belly-up, it's good to see someone else moving into this space; hope the phone side is supported in Linux.
My personal preference is an N900 all the time, and a U820 when I need more, but if you want it all in one device that you can carry always, this looks pretty sweet.
@ruben
That's exactly what I said in my original post. If you look at it as a UMPC which can make calls, then the size is fine and even quite svelte. But, if you look at it as a phone, we haven't seen "mobile" phones this big since the days of the original Motorola with luggable battery pack. And the fact remains, they ARE marketing it as a phone, and it is much more useful as one. A UMPC which can make calls is simply not appropriate as an every day device. Can I fit this in my pocket? Uncomfortably, but yeah. Do I want to? Hell no, and neither do 99% of people.
ahh simple, buy phone, remove windoze install linux or android. Problem solved.
stupid question but what 3g module would i get if im in the usa on tmobile...orange or voda?
none.. you wont get 3G
frankly, what's the fun, in having, XP, on a small screen, I have Samsung UMPC, I find it difficult to even browse a site without the help of magnifying lens (I have a normal vision), this one deserves raspberry award or ig Nobel award
are my eyes that good then? I have no problem browsing on my HTC Touch HD (3.8"). In fact my only gripe with this machine is, that it doesn't run 1024x600.
@Ruben
@ 1024x600 and default font size 10 it's difficult though.
@avis:
Maybe it helps that I just watch porn.
How the fuck do you have " a " normal vision? ALL YOUR BASE, ARE BELONG TO US!
@shopperc.:
I regularly have a vision. Someone must be putting something in my absinth.
Is there anything in this one we haven't already seen?
Desktop OS? Phone capabilities suggest that it has to last for at least a day, is a battery from a truck included?
The Read link says that it's rated for 5 days on standby - that is, Windows running, just not on a call. 5 hours talk time.
Can't we just let Windows XP die gracefully? The OS is 8-years old already and certainly feels like it. It's time to move on to something else. This somehow feels like wheeling out grandma to perform backflips for the kids...
A computer that's too small and a phone that's too big, wonderful.
Well, it has USB, so you can probably install 7 on it.
And by golly I would. But then I wouldn't need that silly keyboard. Keyboards are overrated.
Ruben:
I'm sure there's a third party on screen keyboard somewhere, and besides, without the keyboard it would just be a small tablet with phone capabilities.
@jimminy:
Actually that is exactly what I'm looking for. So yes, that would be great!
Agreed!
Let's see some 7 on that puppy!
Can't even sign up for a pre-order as it doesn't seem to take any phone number as valid. I would consider one but I don't have high hopes when the company can't manage a pre-order page properly. It's not really a pre-order of course, they are looking to gauge market interest, probably before they even spend the buck to actually build one.
Um, you would have to have Anti Virus... on your PHONE.
lol, well I give props to microsoft for not doing this and NOT giving it that name ^_^/
HTC shift runs vista so what? and has a 40gb hard drive and a 7 in screen...
Do people really want BSOD on their phones? :P
-because phones never need resetting, right?
It can't be more buggy than my Symbian UIQ smartphone. Actually, even Windows Me can be considered reliable and stable compared to Symbian.
