ITG's Windows XP-loving xpPhone now accepting pre-orders worldwide
It's been awhile since we last saw the xpPhone, a quick, quiet demonstration at Computex that left us doubting whether the thing would ever see the light of day outside a packed showroom floor. It seems our doubts are about to be put to rest as ITG, creator of the thing, has thrown up a pre-order page on the phone's website. There's no mention of a price, and indeed you won't be asked to plunk down any cash right now (it's not much of a pre-order), but what's interesting is that it asks you to choose between 3G modules for Vodafone, Orange, or AT&T. That means ITG seemingly has aspirations of a global release for this thing, and while we're not sure how many people are going to want to lug around a MID-sized monster celly with a "super big" 4.8-inch LCD and a weight of nearly a pound, surely some nation in the world has pockets big enough for this.

It's ridiculous!
When/where can I buy it?
I can't see the point in having xp on a phone unless you could run something like team fortress 2 on it. and even then it'd be way too unwieldy to be fun. :/
XP on this phone!!!!!!! i can see what will happen when the phone gets released. Calling 911...... This Program is not responding, end now. :)
Nice to see Intel found someone to palm off all their old low power 486 chips to... ;) Seriously though a fully featured desktop OS is just what isn't needed for a phone. Sure users may want a windows like experience but having the whole os is pointless. The better option would be to have core windows components that bolt on to CE so it can run standard windows apps. Android on that device would be better (and maybe wine too)
Considering it's not actually out yet, I'd hope for a W7 version.
Don't know how fast an "AMD Super Mobile CPU" is, but it can have 1GB RAM and a 64GB SSD. I'd rather have 2GB RAM, but 1GB will work with W7.
This would definitely avoid the problem of needing to edit Word and Excel documents on a sub-par mobile editor. And there are a LOT more apps for Windows than any mobile OS. And it's a lot easier to write custom code for a desktop OS than a mobile one - don't need a emulator; just run the test code directly.
My atom based netbook only has a gig of RAM and handles 7 and Office 07 suitably. Before I got it I thought I'd have to immediately up it to 2GB for it to be useful on 7 but the stock 1GB is really usable. I may upgrade it to 2GB at a later date though, probably after its 1 year warranty runs out and I can pop it open
I've experienced spyware and a few viruses on my pc already. Why do I want it on my phone now?
This is awesome,
Barebones XP install runs faster then even 7, and can run well even with 256MB ram and 800mhz proc (and that was back in the day of slow ass FSB too).
While this may not appeal to the trendy department, this is like an N900, but with windows XP. It's not for everyone, but for someone like me who needs an incredibly robust mobile device for travel, this thing is heaven. While I like linux and want to try an N900, this has support for HSDPA from a carrier that actually has it working in the USA and you can install VLC...
so essentially welcome to a mobile device where you never have to worry about whether your phone can play "that format".
That is worth the money to me, never mind being able to load actual desktop apps.... While I think the battery will limit you, I'm sure they will come up with some pretty intelligent power management software, and as long as they use the new style chips, I think this could be a great device for it's target market.
It's basically the Windows/ATT version of what the N900 will do for linux people... a true laptop replacement for those who's needs fit what it's designed for. I am more then willing to plunk down the dough for this right now
xpPhone FTW !!!
