Palm's App Catalog getting paid apps on September 24?
Digital Daily's stumbled across a leaked document apparently addressed to webOS devs that shows a timeline for bringing paid apps to the webOS App Catalog, and one date in particular stands out: September 24 for go-live. The infrastructure's been in beta for a while now, giving everyone some time to get up to speed on the process and iron out the bugs, but for end users, the launch will likely happen in concert with the webOS 1.2 update we've been expecting this month and a redesigned Catalog app designed to support payments. Now, how long before we've got a bazillion-dollar I Am Rich app in there?

About damn time!
Looks like someone broke their developer NDA...
Must work on app. Must work on app.
Now let me add as many applications as i want if I have available memory.....ugh not enough application memory please delete in order to add a new one.. this is stupid.
I wonder if any apps have been on hold until they can be sold.
I know a few of the developers that go their applications in yesterday. A bunch of homebrew people are slowly transitioning their applications over. The nice thing about homebrew is the update process is very quickly. An app can be updated and show up in Preware in a matter of minutes. Hopefully Palm speeds up the process as more developers get trusted and passed through quicker.
Bodily noise simulation applications are sure to come out in force.
must finish my app, must finish soon =)
I don't see why Palm is so worried about paid apps when 90% of the apps that I used to download on my iPhone were free apps. I mean even everyone I know that has an iPhone - most of the apps they have are free ones.
Don't get me wrong I love my Pre, but I don't think that adding paid apps is going to save this app store. Its pathetic at best compared to the iPhone app store.
I think the need to be more worried about pushing out the SDK to as many developers as they can as quick as they can so they can actually get some apps in there.
How long has the Pre been out and there is a total of 50 apps???
There are 83 apps. You're looking at the filters total.
OK, sorry, I stand corrected - 83
but still....
To be fair, how many apps did the iPhone have four months after its
launch?
The iPhone has been out over 2 years longer than the pre. Of course the catalog is bigger. Also, it will pick up some steam once it's on a few more networks.
I know at least 20 iPhone users that I see regularly. Free apps are great (facebook, remote, etc), but A LOT of money has been spent on paid apps. Examples: My brother's TomTom app was $99; my bro-in-law and I both own BeatMaker ($19.99), I have iFitness $14.99; 3 versions of Groovemaker $4.99-9.99 each. Those are not the only high dollar apps owned, just an example. It also doesn't account for all the apps under $2. No one really thinks twice about spending .99 or 1.99.
Money is being spent - in a big way.
Yes good point, but still Palm is not competing with a 3 year old phone, its competing with the 3GS.
I guess my whole point is that I think Palm is dropping the ball here by not releasing the SDK in a timely manner.
@jason51873, the SDK has been out since May (publicly since July).... so, what are you talking about?
when the app store for the iPhone launched how many apps did it have?
552.

To those of you who say "How many apps did the iPhone have 4 months out?" in response to Jason's argument, that's all well and good from a fairness standpoint... but from a practical standpoint, as a consumer who is deciding whether to buy an iPhone or a Pre *right now* (as I am), the number of apps available *right now* and in the near future (i.e. over the next 6 months or so) is really what the comparison of these two phones boils down to.
For someone like me, most of the other features for comparison between the Pre and the iPhone are essentially a tie. They both have great touchscreens. They both have OSs that appear to be years ahead of the alternatives. They both have awesome browsers. I can learn to live with either keyboard. Cameras are comparable (if video recording isn't that important... and to me it isn't... it's a nice plus, but not enough to be THE decision maker in what phone I get). So, the deciding factor really does come down to "What else can the phone do for me?" And this comes down to apps being available. I really hope that Palm is successful and WebOS gets a great community of devs to start cranking out useful apps, but I just don't know if I can wait around for that when it comes to my cell phone purchase *right now*.
@Chad
You forgot to mention that the iPhone had been on the market for nearly 2yrs if not longer; so it took apple 2yr to put together an app store and you expect Palm to do it in 6 months... I don't own a Pre nor an iPhone; but be realistic and fair in your comparisons...
1.Jailbreak phone
2.Use Cydia to install appulous (and installous for direct downloads from iPhone, google it)
3.Go to http://appulo.us/appdb/ and search for app and download
4.Drag to iTunes
5.Sync
6.???
7.Profit!!!
This way I got Navigon, TomTom, A shit load of games and other softwares.
@big_psirex
Oops, I thought you were actually asking how many, so I was simply answering your question. I agree completely with the timeline. Hopefully I will be picking up my own Pre tomorrow morning. =)
You guys need to stop comparing the pre to the iphone.
They are obviously on two different levels.
The iphone is a god phone and the pre is just a wanna-be feature phone.
The iphone had 500 at launch, wanna know why? Because developers realized its potential, nobody in their right mind is developing for the pre, its a dead end.
Low rank me if you want but heed my words, palm experiment is a failure.
@big_psirex
WRONG!
Apple released the App store ONE year after launch, and before it became insanely popular.
They were planning the store when the iphones sales were only 6 million and only available in 2 countries.
Get your facts strait.
Without being able to sell your app there is not a lot of motivation to spend the time to build an app. A lot of the free iPhone apps are free because they also have a paid version. This will really help populate the catalog.
I would assume that a lot of them are also free because they are ad-supported... and all of the ad-supported revenue goes straight to the developer, while a big cut of the revenue of paid apps goes to Apple.
you know about a month ago i was seriously thinking about getting an iphone, Just the connectivity of it, and all the apps seems really awesome. But after i did the math for what im paying now i would be paying over 2 years about 700 more, for a device that at its app heart wants me to spend more money.
Is it really worth spending another 700 on? Really?
I'd really like to know, becasue otherwise im really gunning for the Pre. I like the idea of an actual keypad, and well the multiple open apps is a plus... and honestly i like how it handles Nes emulation...
Need me some Simon's Quest on the road, know what i mean?
You'll just get people backing up the iPhone, Pre or any other mobile device. Just do a little research and make the choice yourself, don't be a sheep :)
totally agree with the comment above figure out what suits you best not what fanboys say. look at the plans the hardware the specs and the OS and get what fits you best
but.....
if you do want my personal bias opinion as a pre owner then go for it just buy an extra batterie off ebay ; )
Crippled bluetooth combined with the same comms tech that's in most modern smartphones is good "connectivity"?
hmm anybody else's catalog unavailable?
I don't know how long you've had your pre, but i've had my pre 4 days and i have to reboot the app catalog like 50 percent of the time. Sometime it doesn't load, but it usually loads the second time you boot it. Hope this helps(if you didn't figure this out after 7 hours).
