I'm sorry, but that thing is still hideous. No thank you.
I agree. This thing is really ugly...
sweet
I think the device is sexy but Good god, whats up with that size of that power brick?
I still think this is a sexy device but that is up with the size of the power supply? Geez!
PSP Go:
* bluetooth
* compact size, lighter weight (43% lighter than original heavy PSP, around 15% lighter than one selling in stores now)
* smaller 3.8 inch screen versus 4.3 inch
* non-removable battery (can't carry a spare, can't replace an old battery that loses its capacity to hold charge as it ages)
* no UMD
PSP
* UMD, plus it downloads the same as PSP Go, given some additions (see below)
* removable battery
* more comfortable controls
* larger 4.3 inch screen
* no storage or USB cable included, but add 16GB memory stick (less than $70 USD) and cable and it's still cheaper than PSP Go
Sweet? Not to me.
I have a 1000, and the faceplate is cracked with the faceplate. Not to mention I can demolish a PSP Go with a few rounds of 6B Whiteblue MX.

I think it's more of a test-product than a full-on release. I doubt they expect to sell a bagillion of them or they would have discontinued the psp3000 (and rumors of a 4000 still exist). DD is the future for handhelds and sony just seems to find out how far along we are as of now.
The device itself looks nice but the reduced battery life and the questionability of umd/download voucher possibility makes me wonder how successful this could ever be.
But then again, they could also be cashing in on the iPhone craze, who knows...
Ugh, typo.
If they'd have replaced those start/select buttons with another analog stick...all other things being equal... I'D HAVE BOUGHT IT THE SECOND IT HIT THE SHELF.
And to those naysayers who claim "new games wouldn't be backward compatible with the existing PSP"
I'd just like to say: that's just stupid because both games and firmware can always support different hardware profiles.
NO THANK YOU SONY.
Sexy(?), this thing is ugly as sin. With its Mylo silhouette, fake plastic chrome rings & crystal buttons- this thing is made for a bling oriented ultra urban demographic. You should see the twilight white with glitter flakes. I about puked. Also just wait to you try and play it for more than 20 minutes . . because it is uncomfortable as hell to hold after a while. It's bad when the DS lites non existant ergonomics feel better. This thing is my barometer for a fanboy.
I hate the PSP Go and the design has nothing to do with it. The design's decent enough... and I doubt you know that the ergonomics of the PSP Go are bad, seeing as, you know, you haven't played one yet. Unless you have. But I hate it because of its features... I thought the design was the best part about it.
In 2009, that adapter is a crime against nature. Not only is the "soap on a rope" a pig, they also use a proprietary plug instead of a USB mini. Didn't Sony get the memo about adopting USB mini as a standard for AC adapters? That way you could at least charge from a PC or maybe your phone adapter, or a third-party car adapter. I used to think Sony was a leader in hardware design, but that adapter is real problem.
Again with the dual analog nonsense. Please list all the games that would have benefited soooo much over a second, crappy nub? I'd also like to know how many people actually enjoy using the current nub as it is. That is, without their hands cramping up...
The new PSP is so excited to get out of the box it's making the whole thing wobble!
First rule of un-boxing PSP go, don't talk about PSP go!
Why are Puggs's comments rated down? Do you guys enjoy carrying that brick around or do you guys not know of Engadget's crappy comment system?
@Massmass
Let's see, why have a second nub...
Well, some of us like to take our non-rail shooters on the road with us. Not having a second nub means the only feasible shooter option is auto-aim, which sorta takes all the fun out of it.
Adding a second nub allows for control of avatars in 3d space, which in many cases, (Patapon and LocoRoco excepted), adds depth (pun intended) to a game.
I got rated down prolly cos I double posted. The first comment did not show up, so I did it again, then like magic, my first comment shows! Makes me look like a tool! Low ranked is to be expected.
@Aguiluz
Yo dawg, I heard you like cracks, so I put a faceplate in your faceplate so you can demolish while you demolish.
Why is there a b but not a g on the WiFi logo?
oh my you are correct... dang why did i upgrade to n : (
my router can use b/g/n so i dont know what's the problem.
@RioRyan
I hope your question was figurative.
@vag
Because b is slower duh!
The PSPGo has to be the only WiFi device released this year that doesn't support at least 802.11G.
Seriously, it has to cost them MORE to find parts that awful.
well of course it only has b... how do you suppose they got the price so low!
sony is digging itself an awfully big hole with this..
I really wish Sony would get on the bandwagon with light-weight chargers with integrated plug. Or at the very least include a power cable that was somewhat flexible.
Integrated plugs are sub-par.
Long live Figure-8 disconnectables.
Favourable worldwide travels plus allows standard power supply with only the cable being the different thing in different markets.
Integrated != Non-interchangeable. MacBook and (previous generation) iPod chargers are a good example of an integrated and interchangeable plug that can also be used with a cord.
nak,
I have no experience with Macs. All I know is I hate plugging the 'fat' bit of an AC adaptor directly to a power outlet and I love me some Figure-8.
This is what makes it possible to ship different country outlet plugs with the same product.
Take a look at this for an example of how to make a charger with integrated plug that is interchangable and usable with a "figure-8" cord:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/A
Sony chargers are much more bulky than they need to be, and the cord they include is incredibly stiff. I have a Sony camcorder and an original PSP -- both include bulky chargers with stiff cords, it's annoying.
BOO! Proprietary Sony USB!
i must admit it is sexy, fingerprints and all... but 16gigs looks awfully small on the box... i mean come on i got 4x that on my key chain for crying out loud!
...but you're wallet must've been crying out loud after getting it, right?
not really... its one of those cheap pico c drives also called the worlds smallest flash drive (they are small!!!)
a very simple reason smart tard, the flash memory in the psp is different from your cheap pico c drive, while your cheap flash drive works at 30MB/s, the flash memory integrated in the psp operates at up to 256mb/s, so shut it before you complain
I don't know what else to say. It's not better than the 2k/3k...yet costs more. Oh well, at least it has that clock xmb
What I want to know is.. why Engadget can't give their impression until later this month? You have one, you opened it.. so what's the hold up?
I bet this thing is a great gaming machine.
It has to be because it doesn't have a camera.
you do know there is a game that require the camera for game play

you actually copied my engadget name?
and engadget allows people to have the same screen name?
wtf?
Check the member date,
it is you who actually copied my name
and apparently Engadget does let people with the same name
this would be such a great handheld if it had a second analog stick.
And/or if the analog stick was in the right place so it's not horribly uncomfortable to use.
That's what she said!!!
its psp1 redesign, not psp2.
better than DS- and I own a DS
I think it looks fantastic, bet it looks & feels a lot better too....
Still, £250, shame sony, shame
I'll get one from the bargain bin for £30 in a few years ta
I agree. I expected around £99 but nearly died when I saw £230. Just not worth it.
"230.00 GBP
=
374.410 USD"
Sony is out of its mind.
Tesco had it for pre-order at £200, which is a very reasonable price for what you get :)
here they're trying to sell 'em for AUD $449.95 (~USD $395). what a JOKE
What wifi is it because its b on the box. Its a joke right?. There is really at least g right? right?
They should have used G, and you'd expect it in a $250 product in 2009.
Though really you probably wouldn't notice the difference if it was G. Wireless B supports up to 11mb/s which is faster than most internet connections and more importantly at least 11 times faster than you're ever gonna get from Sony's servers.
You never get full spec speed on wifi, and 11megabit, not byte, if you think we all have no more than 11mbit internet then you must live in.. uhm.. the UK, or in non-urban US I guess :x
Proprietary dock connector instead of standard mini-usb? Why would pay twice the price just to be limited to Sony's online store and proprietary connectors? The PSP go just makes no sense to me.
Siiggh I still don't get why they didn't add a touch screen that thingis pointless when closed
-_-
touch screens suck for gaming, thats why
SONY please just let the psp1 die. It's time to make a psp2 before you lose all your customers to the iphone/ipod touch and the zune hd.
lol
you said lose customers to the zune hd. lol
lol
I like how the measurement scale for every unboxing is in iPS or iphoneuses
Wouldn't it be better to compare its size with the PSP-3000 rather than the ipod touch?
Nah, this is intended to be the first PSP that's actually pocketable (hence the smaller screen). I think Sony's also trying to buff up the media playback capabilities (music and video) so it becomes an ipod replacement as well. It's not a bad idea...a smaller PSP for casual gamers/yuppie types who don't want to carry around a phone/PDA, ipod AND a portable game system. Dont' know if it'll work though.
Comparison to other things is good, like the iPhone, but it would have made sense to also put it next to another PSP model.
ichheissesuperfantastisch @ Sep 18th 2009 9:15PM
I think Sony's also trying to buff up the media playback capabilities (music and video)...
-------
Music and video capabilities are no different to current PSPs in the PSP Go, so I'm not sure what you mean here. There is no new format support, no better browser, etc.
It's a compact PSP with integrated 16GB storage (for what that's worth; it costs more than a Memory Stick Pro Duo 16GB), that happens to be bundled with a USB cable.
It costs more, but you get less. Makes no sense.
Seems a general trend lately, releasing gadgets that are worse of miss the most obvious things you expect in them this day and age, I'm not sure what the thinking is.
To: Ross Miller
Did you like the New PSP GO? and What the PSP Go is feel like ?
grrrGRRRRR UUUUUUU grrr hhhhhh GRUMMMMLLLL
I WANT IT
...why?
I'm sorry but there is nothing sexy about the physical design of this device. I find it quite ugly. Let's see how well it sells.
Still wishing for that other analog stick to appear.
I'm still not sure why the pspgo gets so much hate from the gadget-aware. my opinion of it does change based on what i'm comparing it to (is it just going to cannibalize the regular psps or actually compete against the ipod touch?), but it seems to fit into a perfect niche for me.
I already carry a perfectly capable (non-apple) smartphone but want more gaming options than the rather awful assortment found in the android market. i don't need the redundancy of all the productivity & communication apps found in the apple app store, but i would like a more dedicated media/gaming device. enter the pspgo with it's smaller size (there's no way i could carry a psp + 4 or so games without a backpack) along with, lets say, 10gb left over after the games for my music/videos for the day/week. that ALMOST seems worth the premium.
The things some people say.
The old psps can also play the downloadable games...
@S.flores91
thank god i thought i was the only one that noticed the proprietery USB cAble and that only says two things headache for the consumers and cash for sony.
this device doesnt impress me at all i like having a physical collection of games not stored on a HDD ill pass for the PSP 2
I can't justify a PSP... Course I would like a PSP Touch HD...
I've given up on the PSP until they actually support modern technologies like 802.11g/n...
A capacitive touch-screen...
The processor should've been Tegra or ARM8 based...
The browser should've been webkit by now, with kinetic scrolling...
It should've had GPS and a Camera by now...
E-mail client and maybe even an actual Apps (not games) store...
Maybe we'll get lucky and the next PSP will be running Android...
Sony doesn't understand that we're spoiled by all these other platforms now... App Stores and all...
The PSP Go is so 2006... Why? Because in 2006 it should've had Bluetooth...
I'll let everyone else fill you in with why you're wrong on so many levels and even more naive on the rest...
touch screens suck for gaming
GPS would have made it too expensive
PSP cant run android, it must run PSP's OS or PSP games wont run on it
The processor must be the same processor PSP uses or PSP games wont run on it
PSP is a game machine, not an app machine
@Extinction: let me tell you why u are wrong on so many levels :)
>touch screens suck for gaming
Ever wondered why iphone/ipod touch games are so popular? just be cause you dont like it , it does not mean they are not selling. Lots of people like them.
>GPS would have made it too expensive
Again not true, i work at a phone company and the biggest mistake SonyEricsson made was not to have GPS in their phone earlier. Sure it cost a few dollar extra but who cares nowdays it the psp cost 285 or 295? not me atleast. But think about how many more appz, games, chat programs etc etc could use the chip for? also consider you can use it as a navigator. list goes on....
>PSP cant run android, it must run PSP's OS or PSP games wont run on it
I'm not sure on this, maybe a emulator?
>PSP is a game machine, not an app machine
ehh what is the different? iphone is a phone but it does not stop it from gaming, application, media usage does it?
Nowdays gadgets must do more then just 1 thing or they die quickly specially if they cost this much. Its like saying pc is for working not games :)
I still hate the design of this device.
that rushed to the market piece of shit. I'm not stepping backwards to give sony another $249.00 for that crap.I already have the psp god of war(damn that slim is flimsy but the screen is amazing) edition that cost me $200.00 and in 07' I dropped $249.00 for the original psp. No thanks sony.
what's that snazzy musical soundtrack?
i would like to know that too
What's up with Sony's new box style? Looks like a Knock-Off box. . .When I first heard of the slim being leaked, I thought it was fake because in the video the box was showed and it looked like a Knock-Off box.
not really like it though my psp2000 has been set aside lacking of some amazing games
if it had a touchscreen it would've been perfect.
More like psp no-go, mirite?
guys, if you don't like it don't buy one, no-one's forcing you to.
As said, people are waiting for a new improved PSP not for a neutered clone of the old one, and if they release an reiteration of the old that means they aren't releasing the new.
sony needs a new industrial design team, that thing is ugly
interesting music, for a sec I thought my computer's sound card was having a seizure.
fingerprints! Exactly why I wanted a white PSP this whole time since the initial PSP I bought.
How can we make one the most uncomfortable-to-hold handhelds of all time, more uncomfortable to play, while excluding a second analog stick?
A bit late?
is that the new psp.... or a new concept girls compact??
/me cowers ... well i could have spewed all my opinions that would be overlooked, like why they didnt make it with 2 dpads this time, why its not compat. with their handy qwerty attachment {that im currently using}, why the screen isnt mat so u can actually use it outside of your mancave, why they didnt make it at least as tech as the dsi... bla bla bl...
