I think pretty soon netbooks and smartphones will merge into devices a bit like this.
Having reasonably large/hi-ish res screens with UI/apps that are closer to a tablet pc than a phone, while still being reasonably pocketable and usable for making phone calls.

Exactly why does the MID classification get so blindly applied? For the past 6 years, something with a touchscreen that ran WinMo was a PDA. Why change the name?
I thought a MID was an intel-based device that ran linux. And then the name got co-opted by non-intel based devices that ran linux.
When will we rename smartphones?
Who on earth wants a WinMo device these days? Good luck selling the device!
A better questions is, who doesn't? With sales of WinMo phones still going good, apparently a lot of people do use it. Even my sister uses it on her T-Mobile Dash, and she's no tech person either, not to mention several students from my school.
One of the major problems with spreading WinMo everywhere is that the native web browser is completely non-conformant to current web standards.
If you own a WinMo device, try the following Acid3 test, on your IE mobile browser:

For the sake of comparison, the major desktop browsers show results like these:
Chrome 2.0 - 100/100
Safari 4.0 - 100/100
Opera 10 - 100/100
Firefox 3.5.3 - 93/100
IE 8 - 20/100
If you compare the iPhone 3GS to the Zune HD, you may see results like this:
iPhone 3GS - 100/100
Zune HD - 5/100
As you can see, Microsoft's is not only spreading around IE6 level non-standard crap with WinMo, but also with the new Zune HD.
Since the phone runs WinMo, guess what? You can use PIE to download any mobile browser of your choice. Stuff like Opera Mobile, Skyfire, Iris, etc. You're not exactly forced to use PIE in WinMo. Not to mention that standards compliance isn't the only thing that makes a good browser.
Of course, Microsoft has a long way to go in making its internet browsers more standards compliant, and IE8 was designed more to pass the Acid2 test, than the Acid3 test that only recently came out during IE8's development. However, claiming that its still "IE6 level" is just wrong. IE6 was much worse.

If you were a web developer, I'm sure you'd beg to differ. Because of IE's market share, web developers have to kludge their sites, to support it. Microsoft should have a conscience not to ship IE, on any of their products, until they can get it right.
@HereAndNow: Well I'm not a developer, but I have heard that some developers, though a little irked that IE8 doesn't go all the way, isn't as bad as it used to be.
Since I'm not a developer, I care more about the other stuff.

How is this a "Smartbook?" It doesn't fold, and it doesn't have a keyboard. What in the hell does "Smartbook" mean NOW?
This used to be an internet tablet, or maybe a DPA.
yeah, other than semantics they probably should have named it smartpad???
