i believe i predicted this.
I'm still rocking a 30gb OG, love that thing but tommrow I'm getting a HD off zune.net I played with my friends today and I have to say the GUI made me shit my pants.

that's not gonna make Zune users very popular.
On a more serious note:
Otherwise, competition is good. Hope the Zune is a hit. Anything that instigates competition and pushes technology further, faster is good in my view. Especial is the mobile/pocket device category.
I agree. A better Zune HD presses apple to release updates that add FM to the iPhone, or a better camera, or a processor that can support multi-processing, or whatever other features apple fans would like added to their device-of-choice. Similarly, it's MS's efforts to compete with the iTouch or iPhone that have prompted the Zune HD's advances. Whichever platform we prefer, we should hope the other keeps getting better and better, so OURS keeps getting better and better of necessity.
The Zune Hd is for musical purposes. Do not mention the Iphone, if you like then keep it, but do not tell others not to purchase a Zune HD. As, I said before the Zune HD is meant for those who want an enriched music experience.
One thing more is that not to compare a phone to a media player, it obvious that they have purposes.

Best Music Player EVER. Period.
Don't argue that the iPhone or iPod Touch are better, its pointless really. First off, the reason most people will want this is music, don't argue apps, don't argue browser- those are both after thoughts on this device really. The sound quality on this and previous Zunes is better then apples current offerings and thats really whats important on a PMP. Second, the Marketplace is way better then iTunes is right now, iTunes may have a bigger selection, but Marketplace has way better tools to buy and discover music- after a week of having a Zune pass, I can honestly say that in the years of buying hundreds of CD's, downloading thousands of MP3's, and posting on music forums and blogs, I have not seen anything better. Does apple do some things better? of course, I'm not gonna argue otherwise, I have an iphone and I love it, but I have no music on it. I preferred my Zune 120 for that, and now I prefer my HD over it- its seems although the iPod started as a music device, I has transformed into a device that wants to do everything for you with music second, and its a breath of fresh air to see a music device that puts music first.
I think any "Apple Fans" trying to "inform" "Zune Fans" should sit this out. Clearly, Zune deserves its moment in the sun.
That said, having devices "sell out" is over rated. When the iPhone 3G sold out, it wasn't "wonderful", it was irritating. When the original iPhone did NOT sell out, tons of people got screwed who wanted to resell their "unique" devices on eBay, not counting on the fact that Apple was quick to pump them out, and kept on top of demand.
Microsoft was SMART to under-stock these things and let demand dictate production pace. They'll have more soon enough, and the marketing buzz of "selling out" has done wonders for the game stations. Hopefully Microsoft learns from those mistakes however, and doesn't leave customers sitting months on end, unable to buy. Wii would have sold more units if they'd figured that out way back.
boo hoo people will die because they can't listen to black eye peas because they can't get a hold of a zune hd?
@vajj
It's just a numbers game. Pull your emotions out. Those of us that traffic in Microsoft stock would simply like them to not forgo an opportunity if they can avoid it.
But, hopefully sales of the Zune HD aren't mostly cannibalized from owners of the previous model.
--An easily agreed upon statement...? The more of a foothold Microsoft can get on the wave of positive reviews... the BETTER. I think the "free games" concept might be a huge winner if Microsoft begins linking Zune to XBox 360, on the game front. In the vertically integrated model of gadget, "sticky" is as important as "location" is to realestate, and "footprint" is the next highly valuable point of leverage.
I am still trying to figure out how to make a phone call on mine, or play a game, or... Oh wait, nevermind.
yeah ... ummm ... really? ... that's what you have to contribute? nevermind ... just looked at your history of comments on engadget ... nothing bright there either.
I wish MS made a 64GB model and made it mac compatible, I'm a fanboy of both MS and Apple, I love windows and Snow Leopard why can't I enjoy both? I have a 3G iPhone and want a Zune HD but space is the only thing holding me back :(
I got last one from near BestBuy store, though there are not so many applications but I'm enjoying the video HD radio more than I used to on iphone
Here are some very disturbing comments about the Zune HD.
http://forums.zune.net/0/1/520000/PrintPost.aspx
1. not disturbing
2. most of the complaint are either, a occasional messed up device or user error (most)
that whole page was laughable.
The Zune HD makes me regret that I'm using a Mac ...
I found a Best Buy store near me that still had a couple on hand, but all the remaining stores in the area were out of stuck. I'm loving the Zune HD, it's pure happiness.
This threads title is a bit sensational. I mean a "major sellout," come on. If Microsoft had announced they made 2 million Zune HDs and there were lines around the building on launch day, and those 2 million sold out THAT would be a "major sellout." In my book, every BB and Wallyworld store selling out 15-20 units is not all that spectacular given 25% of the market will buy anything other than an iPod and the Zune HD is no slouch.
That said, this seems to be some played over viral attempt to make the Zune HD seem a must have item on your holiday gift list. Reality is Microsoft has done little advertising and the ads the do have are lame-o and confusing. Bottomline there hasn't been enough time for the Zune HD to even catch on, if it is to become the next hot thing. The Zune HD launch was pretty silent if you didn't tune into a gadget blog. It's funny though seeing both Zune HD and iPod Touch owners try so hard to justify their purchase when no on really cares.
Most consumers just want gadgets that work intuitively. Don't give me this crap that the Zune HD sounds better so it will sell better. How many people walk around using the white iPod buds listening to 160kbps MP3s. The avg. person doesn't give a crap about sound. It's about usability and features. Right now people are locked into iTunes and the Zune s/w, unlike the actual player, is not so usable.
So for all you thinking your Zune HD will be the next cool thing, wrong. It's not that it's not a great player, but Microsoft just doesn't have its act up to Apple marketing standards yet, and that is the key to winning after having a good product.
Bravo Tones. It's all about marketing and sure the topic is sensational and misleading. But it does get a lot of eyeballs, on it doesn't it?
Spot on TJ - nobody hears of iPod shortages and yet they're best sellers. This looks like another MS mishap, rather than overwhelming success
There is a 1 month back-order at Dell too (probably thanks in part to the Engadget post about their sale on the Zune HD)
I will never buy this. As Cool as it is, and as BAD as i want it, After i have 4 360's break within 1 week I vowed only to buy Windows Programs, and NO NO NO NO NO HARDWARE. PERIOD> But i would like it.
No Zune HD for me just yet, but all this PR motivated me to re-up my Zune Pass after a few months without it on my Zune 80GB. I forgot how crazy good it is, I got about 2 GB worth of new stuff just last night by addictively linking from one Smart DJ Mix to the next.
For those of you who were stating understock / false demand issues. I would like to tell you my tale of getting a Zune HD.
I live near St. Louis MO. On the Illinois side of the river. On the 15th my friend and me went Zune Hunting. The only 2 we were able to find were in Edwardsville, IL.
We checked out at customer service, Behind the counter in the locked cage were piles of zune HDs. All of them with hold for X person tags on them. I would estimate near 100 boxes in total. So we thought wow thats pretty impressive.
We happened in later that afternoon (decided to pick up the BB PRP on them just in case), and all of the zune HDs were picked up and gone.
Now that's a minor Best buy in the middle of no where for most of you.
So I doubt the number of 4 per store was any where near accurate.
u crapple fan boys need to get a life; unless the icrap can do dishes, laundry, and give good bj's; it still just an mp3 player
I've been debating if I should wait for the 64GB model... I guess the decision has been made for me..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_scarcity
Microsoft still only owns a whopping 1% of the personal media player market.
None.
Let's see... I decided to pick mine up on launch day (RIGHT after school). The place where I "pre-ordered" it, didn't even get any 32 GB in, and only had 16. They weren't even planning to get the 32 GBs in, but let me pre-order it anyway (soo lame). I canceled by my preorder, ran over to the other best buy near me that had 10 left (as the best buy guy said from the first store), and by the time I got there only had 4 left, and had about 8+ of the 16 GBs. So I was able to get it, but if I waited much longer, I would not have been so lucky. Now I checked the 6 stores near me and they are ALL sold out of 32 GB.
i preordered mine, the day after i got it and showed some of my buddys, one of them ran out and bought one. The next day i saw few more people with them.....its great they they have found out there is a competing player to the ipod and , the social will be great if theres a shit-ton of people on it. I really hope that they will stop printing the "hello from Seattle" on there in the next few weeks to distinguish the "cool kids" for the posers
Stop it with the nonsense. Microsoft is so over and done. Stick a fork in em.
Some screen names are so telling... So Very, Very Telling.
As soon as I can convince myself replacing a functional Zune30 with a $200 ZuneHD, I will add to this supply problem.
Aka I will be buying one
Um.. OLED? Thats a huge selling point for me right there.
Maybe half the commenters here are just a little grumpy because they just blew all their allowances on a new iPod touch and have now realized that there was something better. They plead false arguments to try not to succumb to a fit of buyers remorse and are too stubborn to return it to toys 'r' us for a refund. Shaaaame. Come on Zune HD. Sooooooo much potential : D
Posted like a truly 'Logical Thinker' - Thanks
I see Apple and Microsoft employees are working overtime in the comments today.
Look at how many people love to hate on MS. Funny to see people get scared by competition. I guess this means the Zune is a win.
All Best Buy stores around my house were out.
I went to check on Walmart's site.
It listed 15 stores in this region but only one had it.
So I drove cross state for 45 mins and only three of the 16GB were there.
The walmart was in the middle of nowhere lol.
f
I dunno but using Amazon product reviews as an example, I think they sold more then a few Zune HDs.
Who cares? I like mine a lot.
MS Employee? I don't think so.
Hardly a surprise - the device looks sexy, is functional, and has had a decent amount of marketing. It would only be a surprise if it didn't sell well.
If nothing else it proves that consumers are not brainwashed slaves to Apple, despite what the anti-Apple crowd have been saying for some time.
IPODS ARE GOOD AND OVERRATED.THE I PHONE ON THE OTHER HAND IS AMAZING TO BAD THE SOFTWARE SUCKS BALLS.
Several of my posts have been DELETED in the comments, especially an early one simply stating the specs of the device. In other words, for NO GOOD REASON.
Also posts believing that there's a lot of astroturfing going on here. Poof! disappeared.
Very classy, Engadget.
Never before have I seen this happen.
We all know who is buttering your bread here, I think.
