Larva Labs proposes 'intelligent' Android home screen
HTC and Motorola may have done their best to whip Android's interface into shape, but it looks like the folks at Larva Labs still weren't satisfied with the options available, so they've naturally gone ahead and designed their own UI (with a little help from Ideas on Purpose). While it's unfortunately still just a concept, the firm's so-called "Intelligent Home Screen" does bring plenty of interesting ideas to the table, which Larva Labs says should help it "appeal to Blackberry owners and people struggling with information overload." The centerpiece of the concept is a home screen divided by a (slightly familiar looking) slider bar, which puts personal items like emails up top and general interest stuff on the bottom, with relevant apps accessed by the icon on the right-hand side of the screen, and everything else relegated to a separate menu. Hit up the read link below to check it out in action.

that looks so awesome! its like rss for your phone
No rainbow on my phone. :)
...not that there's anything wrong with that.
It looks more confusing than helpful, IMO.
I'd say it's a bit over the top. I'm sure some people will like all the info, but I think a majority will find this more confusing than useful.
Yeah, and everyone who's take your phone - will enter to your privacy information just in seconds...
STUPID IDEA!
This is why Android gets my vote. I think in the coming years we will be able to change interfaces as we do themes or color schemes. So while Android will be giving you tons of choices on bleeding edge interfaces, Windows Mobile will always be giving you the one from 5 years prior.
There should be a law against companies showing us products like this without a "download here" link.
Bastards!
I like it..though it isn't exactly revolutionary..looks win mobile-ish or even like intelliscreen on the iphone...but'd do it in a heart beat to my g1
I agree, looks WinMobilish to me
Did you watch the video? Bears no resemblance whatsoever to WinMo.
I dont really think that that UI would look good on a G1, i think that screen is a little too small. This UI should be reserved for phones like the HTC Leo.
WinMo 6.5 looking I agree!
Agreed. It looks a fair bit like Titanium on WinMo 6.5, though some of the functionality is different.
I like the idea of expanding a particular information area presented on this, but I also like the fact that people are building whole new widget areas for Titanium for real customizaton.
The revolution will not be televised. Podcasts, on the other hand...
Larva must be hoping Motorola or HTC jumps in and buys them out.
au chanter
ROYGBIV theme might not be for everyone.
Looks more like ROYGIVB to me. Have no idea why they moved blue to the bottom...
Not bad, eh?
Am I the only one that thinks this looks a bit cluttered? I keep trying to read the text on it to see what things are where and just end up getting bored to death right away by all the text.
Honestly I'm just happy to see companies taking real interest in UI design! Sure it isn't perfect (agree about the clutter effect) but it keeps creatives in business while providing better usability to the end user.
Long live competition!
Just goes to show how versitile android is.
how does a company that made primarily games for Android go and make this? Odd.
Either way, it looks pretty interesting!
...because there isn't sufficient money in Android games alone.
Yawn!
Dead sexy.
Pretty slick. Now if only it comes with larger fonts.
Little too busy, but the effort here is worthy of note. Give it to me with just missed calls, calendar, email, facebook and weather.
The N97 widget interface does just that with a bit more flexibility. The calender widget is a bit lacking though.
WinMo 6.5 rip-off.
Oh, and a lot less elegant to boot.
Behold the beauty and functionality of WM 6.5's Titanium Home Screen

lol
a lot like titanium
i will say that titanium is not all there yet... customizing it is a huge pain, and there could be a lot more functionality (like a media player plug-in for a media-player that works)
so no more android widgets support? wallpapers?
The Youtube link, for those of you who (like me) prefer NOT to install Quicktime...

Thanks, the latest version of Quicktime screwed up my plug-ins in Opera.
I'm sorry it must be just me cause that was the most Omg boring shit i have ever seen the years and suckiest android ui promo i have ever seen like someone said it looked like an rss feeds Shinka into a phone ui i would never run that but it likely has some "good points" for boring ass people who dress in mono-color every day
I love all these different versions of Android :) I hope eventually no matter your device you would be able to DL whichever one you prefer:P hehe
i do love all the android developments though had donut on my phone a week ago ;P tasty
This looks app-worthy, like as an alternative home screen, but I would never use that as a default. It's too cluttered and I like having a one track mind at times where I select an app and receive the data I look to obtain. Having all of that on one screen looks more confusing than helpful, especially because nothing really differentiates the info panels from one another besides the slim color tab. They should make each info bar it's own color instead.
Isn't Android open source... which means they can roll their own, instead of waiting for someone to do it? I dunno, sell the skin in the Android market. It's not for everyone, but if it's just as revolutionary as they claim, some people will buy it. I've seen skins for WinMo being sold for some time, I don't see why they can't go that route.
It may look like Win Mo (Zune too) but it isn't. There was never much wrong with win mo's UI design, it was more functionality that got on my nerves and led me to a BB. I love information all in one place, it certainly beats the current method of application bouncing that drives me insane on my iphone and BB. Keep it up, make it better, Zune font it, and release it.
That actually looks really confusing. It's simply too much. It looks nice no doubt but it's completely over the top. I'm still liking Nokia's homecreens much better; 4 rows for live update apps, 1 for apps, 1 for time/date/status. It's simple, elegant and gives just enough info without overwhelming and is much more suited for how mobiles are used. A quick glance and you know what's up. This Android screen overwhelms too completely.
Looks nice though.
With all due respect to Larva Labs I think the current Android interface is way better than a silly color coded list...
Now if they'd just employ a trained usability engineer to go with their over enthusiatic graphic designer. Colour coding? Seriously? That's UX 101 stuff guys. Some more UX 101 words for you: Few hues, many values, deep background, affordance.
It's nice, but looks a bit cluttered.
Will work for some people, but may not appeal to masses.
This application is finally available in the Android Market. Here is a full review: http://bit.ly/slidescreen
