Intel wouldn't let anyone touch it -- or even close the browser out to the home screen -- but we just got a quick glimpse of the new phone-oriented Moblin 2.1 running on an unnamed Compal MID and an Acer netbook. It's certainly pretty, and the widgets look nice, but we're not going to be happy until we can poke at it ourselves. One more pic after the break!
Wait... how do we know that isn't just a picture (or a looped video, if there are any unfixed components) pulled up on the screen? For God's sake, SOMEONE TOUCH IT!
Compal Moblin? sounds like a slow 4 year old trying to pronounce things. When will gadget companies realize the formula for success is 30% innovation and 70% image.
I can see this being more of a direct competitor to android as its not designed to run on only one brand of phone unlike maemo. well the icons and things can be used on different brands unlike maemo. and everything should be open source like the netbook version unlike the bundled proprietary apps on maemo.
?? Maemo is Linux you nub, you can run it on anything you want, just compile the source code for the platform you want to put it on. The UI on Maemo uses the GTK widget library, yes GTK the same library used with Gnome. The only things closed source are the obvious driver binaries and things like flash.
pfffffffffffff .... new OS, i can see this OS going nowhere , because it's Atom based which consume lot of power compare to ARM based CPU, Intel design this only to promote Atom base Phones!.
Moblin is open source and has already been ported to ARM. Intel may not make any attempt to optimize it, but the community has already got it up and running.
Not letting anyone touch that shit is like when you go into Foot Locker and them schmucks have those sweat shop made, expensive Jordans locked up in a case with an Israeli sniper on patrol ready to pop yo ass like zit if you even look as if your trying to get too close. PAH-LEASE! Hype, hype and more hype.
It's not an iPhone, it's a Gigabyte M258 MID. I was just looking at these yesterday and considering one. There's also an Aigo MID 8888W, which is quite nice.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
its better than iPhune
Yes, just a screenshot of the browser is sufficient to produce a genuine comparison between the two products, does seems to reflect your intelligence.
iPhune... is that an iPhone with an OLED screen, Tegra processor, hd video out and radio? If so, this could be quite a twist... >.>
behind the low ranking, it almost looked like iphume
browser only shots do nothing for me. until i see more i won't voice an opinion.
Everyone waits with bated breath for that day.
duh...no one can

Compal only does stuff that other companies rebrand to sell as their own so I don't think they care too much about the brand...
i'm all for options but this kind of market saturation is becoming obnoxious
As with all industries, things will shake out soon enough. Remember how many operating systems competed at the dawn of computing?

Go ARM!

i think the phone is just a proof of concept. for netbooks, moblin does look very compelling.

Hype, hype and more hype.
I too think it is more hype than its worth...but I could be wrong.
More operating systems should be named after Zelda enemies. I'm looking forward to Windows Octorok.
You get mad nurd propz!
Indeed. Though I'm more interested in Dell Deku Scrub.
lol, zelda
how big is that screen? any guesses?
Between 4 and 5 inches.
nice...any competition is good
Bye Bye Windows 7. You are just too outdated already. not cool. not convenient. no style.
sweet.....

Yes, the background on the MID is that of the iPhone. http://www.umpcportal.com/products/Aigo/MID/8888W
There are some REALLY sweet pieces of machinery on that website. Get familiar and you'll say "iPhone, what?"
What happened to Moblin's brother Goblin???
hardware = 10% of the equation, OS is everything... Not being able to touch *use* the device means it's buggy.
EH!!! Moblin can use touch, wake up and pull your iPhone out of your anus
Some more info obtained by Mwd looks like Q1 is some release date?
