Audiovox integrates PlayStation 2 into rear-seat entertainment system
Tired of strapping muzzles on your youngsters whenever you have to make that eight hour trek to grandma's pad? So were a couple of engineers at Audiovox. The VOD10PS2 claims to be the planet's first fully integrated gaming system made for the car, with the overhead system not only packing a 10.2-inch display, but an honest-to-goodness PlayStation 2 console as well. Just so we're clear -- the $949.99 asking price nets you the box itself, a screen, a PS2, two wireless controllers, a built-in dome light, a pair of fold-flat IR wireless headphones and a copy of Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando and Hot Shots Golf 3. Heck, there's even a remote and FM transmitter, not to mention a pair of trim rings that'll obviously work with whatever drab interior color you selected for your minivan. So, willing to pay just under a grand to shut the little ones up forever? (Tempting, isn't it?)

For about 500 dollars less you can get a ps3, those games, AND get this, put it in the car yourself with a little messing around.
You forgot to mention that that same $500 would also include A PAIR of 7 or 8 inch LCD monitors to use AND the PS3 will play BD and DVD
You're forgetting the dome light.
That thing makes up most of the cost. ;)
It would be even more cost effective for the parents to buy (2) PSPgo or 3000's, or DSi's, or iPod Touchs, then this old crap.
Really, for almost $1000.
Maybe in 2002, but not today.
Ripoff.
Things that start with "Audiovox" scare me.
"Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando?"...sounds like gay porn. :)
For $500
you could get a PS3 Slim and a 19inch 720p LCD TV.
All the Ratchet and Clank games do. It's sort of a running joke. Up your Arsenal is probably the best name.
In Russia the Playstation 2 plays you in the frigging car
Well, at least they had the common sense not to build in a Wii.
Not so fast. You'd need to put in a heavy duty radiator to cool the PS3. That's extra $$.
@shadowmaker
wiis are for full size vans not minivans and suvs...
This won't shut them up. It will just change what they are arguing about.
"I wanna play Hello Kitty Island Adventure"
"No, I wanna play Brutal Bloody Death Fight 4"
*fists*
Why oh why is "fists" an action?
So who put that classy picture of a mushroom cloud explosion on the screen?
LOL...Look at the future demonic serial killers grinning at the on screen destruction.
It is actually a screen shot of a single player game. (one of the ratchet and clanks). I don't get why two kids a both trying to play single player with two separate controllers.. But oh well
Good game non the less
With a little time, some metal, rubber, and plastic, you can make your own Maserati for like 500 bucks.
I'm guessing you were replying to onox37, in which case I think the amount of time to hand build a car is substantially greater than the time required to plug an ac adapter into the cigarette lighter, shove the PS3 under a seat and hang a pair of lcd's on the back of the seats.
Would have been nice if the games included are the GTA Series.
:D
I still think it's more effective to hire someone to kill them both in their sleep. It may cost a little more, but at least you will know for sure that it will shut them up. If you hustle the man a little bit you may even get a "No good then money back" guarantee.
FAIL......both this setup and your comment
does it come with barf bags? i got sick just by reading while the car is in motion... playing while in motion = sloppy joe situation.
I know it's been about 8 years but still... too soon.
i shouldnt laugh at this so secretly this is funny, but also sad at the same time. And someone needs to tell the company its PS3 now.
Great. Now, instead of screaming children, you have a bunch of leet jerks in the back of the car.
Mom: Hey guys, what you playing?
Son: Killzone. grenade. GRENADE!!! How did you not see that!?!?!
Mom: Cool, is that anything like scrabble?
Daughter: Don’t be a newb, mom! Dammit! Now, I just took a head shot. Don’t distract me when I’m in the zone, you cow!
Mom: Okay, kids. I’ll tell you when we get to Mcdonalds!
What a n00b, he's getting pwned by his sister!!!
Funny how the marketing department shows off the single player game like Going Commando, yet both children mimic as if they were both playing.
Stupid, FAIL.
Dude, didn’t you ever give your younger more oblivious sibling the controller and lie to them that they were actually playing?
Works all the time.
You're forgetting the "built-in dome light."
That thing makes up most of the cost. ;)
I hate to sound like an old man, but kids today are spoiled. When I was a kid all we had to keep us entertained during long drives were books and maybe a Gameboy or a Game Gear.
Game Gear???? Seriously.....I'll I had was a speak 'n spell and maybe a SImon for long trips.
you are spoiled, when I was a kid we didn't even have cars!
I never realized how much engadget readers hated kids like they are the anti-gadget.
They scratch screens, make everything sticky and delete your game saves. What's not to hate?
Who the hell would pay $1000 for this? I bet they sell two.
Are you KIDDING? Do you see the people they are catering to? They're going to sell like hotcakes! They won't be able to make enough!
Who would buy an $80 HDMI cable? Yet Monster cable thrives...
I have a gaming-quality computer with a touchscreen moniter in my das, as well as a 18" LCDTV hooked up to an xBox 360, all done for under $900, and this is a good deal?
Ultimate bullshit fail.
Does this come with some sort of device that makes it see-through when the driver is looking through the rear view mirror?
Does it come with the MILF?
FINALLY someone says something sensible.
only ones with bad posture
I'd hit it.
Good for viewing movies and playing some quick games on a long trip, but that price is horrible.
What is probably driving up the cost is the brand name, the "pretty" installation, and the IR headphones setup. Unless that 10 inch LCD screen is of better quality than I assume...
In what reality does the 'Audiovox' brand name drive UP the cost of an item?
I mean, didn't they buy the RCA brand from GE solely so they could charge some kind of markup for their garbage?
For almost grand I am shocked this isn't RCA branded, cause Audiovox just screams cheap grocery store brand.
I guess it make sense only because it would mostly be for kids and a PS3 or 360 consume a considerable amount of power compared to a PS2. Also, heating issues and the like would be problematic when trying to implement a current gen console.
Still, I'd be pissed if my mom spent 1,000 buck on a console for the car when she could have bought a bunch of new games for my handheld or home console.
Not that it matters much to me now. I'm 30 and far from worrying about what my mom does to her car.
@va jj 'most' people with that kind of motion sickness can't read because it's looking down. Watching a movie, in front of them is okay.
