As expected, Intel just announced its
Clarksfield laptop chips, bringing Core i7 to the laptop form factor. There'll be three chips, two regular quad-cores and a Core i7 Extreme that can run as fast as 3.2GHz in Turbo mode, which selectively shuts off cores and uses the extra power to speed up the remaining cores while preserving battery life. The parts were demoed working in shipping-ready form on stage, but pricing and availability weren't mentioned -- we'll let you know what we can dig up.

When will it go and sale?
Efficient =/= Accuracy
Fast =/= Accuracy
Still waiting on the LV or ULV...
i7 is nice, but battery life is nicer
@Aguiluz
=/= != A real form of notation

@Zune
I consider myself an AMD fanboy but damn you are one crazy person.
I say this with no offence intended for crazy people
I'm sorry did you say 3.2 Ghz?!?!?!
THIS...CHANGES....lol, I'll give that a rest already ^^
3.2 X 4 ?
@ Dary
No, it's not 3.2 in quad core. Turbo mode is basically an efficiency feature. When only one processing core is being used it turns off the other cores and temporarily boosts the speed in the core you're using, giving you better real world performance and reducing power drain at the same time. When running in quad core mode these chips are 2.0Ghz.
@Matt
Actually the 920 runs at 2.26Ghz on 3 or 4 cores. Still a far cry from 3.2, but a little better.
The neat thing I think, is that it runs at 3.06 on 2 cores.
Good, but does it suffer battery life? quad core use a lot of power in desktop. Also when we ever seen this in netbook?
When you see 32 cores in desktops and 16 cores in laptops. : )
In your dreams
I'm curious of performance benchmarks between these and the desktop chips, especially between that Sager/Clevo laptop with a desktop i7-920, difference in performance and battery life.
The Sager/Clevo comes with a Q9000 i believe- which the Core i7 820m will beat in most cases- BUT the battery power is somewhat limited unless you turn turbo boost off and slip into power saving mode. The fully charged battery can be eaten in 45 MINUTES! if used at 100% processing (like gaming or video encoding perhaps?. Now- the Core i7 920m- I think that comes with an "extreme" moniker like the Q9300 and will cost BIG$. I'm waiting for a mid level Sager or Asus gaming rig to come out- Core i7 820m with Nvidia 260m or 280(or better yet 300 series!!)
May 14, 2011: Apple announces quad core processors now available in MacBook Pro.
naw, these will be available in early 2010, along w/ usb 3.0.
and they will overheat
I doubt it. Apples been really pushing battery life with their macbook pros. An the core i7 is pretty much going to be a step backwards in that regards.
Sept 23, 2009 Joanna has announced she's an idiot!
Too bad Fernando is still in the closet...
I doubt it- battery power with these little Core i7 quads will NOT be inn Mac's current line of computer selling. Although, you never know- Steve Jobs could turn things around with the proper marketing and sell you "The fastest battery draining mobile computer we've produced yet!" -cue applause;) Why WOULD Mac put this in a laptop? Not for gaming that's for damn sure- with the 9600M that they sell currently which is WAAAAY underpowered for the price- Maybe for video encoding?? Oh- BTW- I DO love my macbook pro which I am writing this post from- so don't automatically put me off as a Mac hater or Window's lover ( I'd actually rather be called a hater than a Windows lover)- I'm just telling it as it is.
Gaaah jesus I want to go to there. Slam them into everything, and let's see some competition within the next generation.
Going to be a hell of a holiday season, recession or not.
I still like my desktop i7-920 better XD. Only battery I need is a CMOS button cell.
Good luck moving it around the house while downloading a torrent. ;)
I move around the house just fine when downloading torrents on my desktop i7-920. I just walk away from the computer. GASP!! The thought of it!
We're still in recession?
Not in Vermont =).
The beginnings and ends of recessions can only be declared retro-actively, since financial numbers are only reported on a quarterly basis. So we may very well be out of the recession, but nobody can say for certain until the end of the quarter.
"mobile" i7...if mobile is defined as a computer which is by some stretch of the word portable and has a "battery", then yeah, the devices using this will be mobile.
the future of laptops is dual core CULVs
So the future of laptops is zero productivity? Dual cores choke on many productive applications.
how many watts?
AFAIK 45W, and 55W for the extreme.
Can anyone say mobile Pentium 4 rehash?
Guys, I think intel has done it. I can now frag newbs at mega fps and heat my house in the winter time!
Damn, I thought it said core i7 for netbooks then, I'll keep dreaming...
Netbooks aren't designed to be processing workhorses anyway. they are meant to be very portable and a net browser.
I will wait for 32nm and 22nm and when they can do Turbo Mode on all the Cores, not shut down 3 Cores to boost one Core to 3.2Ghz, they turn my Quad Core mobile i7 into a Single 3.2ghz CPU
No thanks
32nm will be meh
22nm in 2011 that tech should blow people socks of with new improvements and so power effcient they can finally Turbo Boosst all 4 or all 6 core from 1.9Ghz to 3.9Ghz and use less watts than 18TDP
I don't think you understand the point of "Turbo Mode". If you turn up the clock speed on all the cores, you're just overclocking it and increase the power drain as well as the heat output, both serious considerations on a laptop. Turbo mode is not overclocking, it's an efficiency measure. It turns off the other cores when they're not in use and overclocks a single core as fast as possible while still maintaining a similar power draw and heat output as it does when all 4 cores are running at stock speeds.
Its too bad that I don't think Intel will be releasing any other Quad core chips for laptops until Sandy Bridge (Late 2010 or early '11)!!
Since Arrandale (32nm shrink of nehalem mobile) will just be a dual core with a 45nm GPU in the package as well. This sucks. I want a quad core Nehalem @ 2.66GHZ! Not 2GHZ!
Apple typically does a november refresh on the laptops, will we see it then? I'd like a MacBook Pro with this chip in it and an external optical drive. pwease!!
Ehm, can't see how you missed this, but there are THREE chips - the 7200M (1.6GHz), 8200M (1.73GHz) and the 920XM. It quite clearly says so on your picture, as well as previously posted reviews of said chips ...
It's actually 720QM and 820QM, but you are correct they definitely list more than two chips.
i7 mac mini would be good.
holy molly , I'd buy a I7 macmini or some kind of apple small desktop with that in there...
Jeez, the Apple fanboys are greedy. When is i7 coming to our precious Macs, when is the HD5870 coming to the Macbook Pro, etc?
Give it a rest, get used to being behind the hardware curve you Mactards. You paid the price.
RKN, are you dell FANBOY ?, don't compare it with dell.
Yep.
@snoowleopard
When did he even mention Dell? You Mac people really sound dumb sometimes.
Will it Blend?
I want to inhale the fumes ... mmmmhhh technologic advancements
What can we cook on them?
Alabama Marinated Duck
Maybe the Mac fan club can clear this up for me, why does the mac user need this kind of power? Thought the mac user was happy to have a stable platform.
For the record built my own core i7 920 desktop, and I have never used a Mac. Not a hater, just not that interested.
lol I agree with you on that. They all like to brag about there Macbook Pros and how great battery life is and how great OS X software is etc. etc. I hope they know a Core i7 processor is going to take battery life down to like 1 hour tops.
For the record, who cares if you want/like Macs or not?
@Jeremy
I'm sure no cares what I want or like. It was more a commentary on the number of "I want this for my mac" comments I observed. I was surprised at that, so posed the innocent question why do you want it for your mac.
Added the for the record comment just to clarify that I was not bashing the mac user/lovers, just curious. Don't be such a hater.
@AI.O.
How will it take battery life down? This chip has the same TDP as the chips apple uses now(other than the exteme edition). Battery life should be very comparable.
@Cdub,
"why does the mac user need this kind of power? Thought the mac user was happy to have a stable platform."
Why would a Windows user need this kind of power? Considering many Mac users also run Windows, the answers are going to be the same.
For me, I'm doing all kinds of stuff at the same time on my laptop. Encoding HD video is a huge part of the desire for speed, but at the same time, I'll very likely be running Photoshop and may be watching or listening something in the background and switching back and forth from running Windows in Parallels for testing stuff...have all kinds of windows open in different browsers with Flash apps, etc... In short, I don't want the speed of the machine telling me what I can or can't be doing at any time.
Stable? I'm not sure what you think makes the i7 unstable.
If it helps:
Here's a Stats Chart for all the products launched today:
http://bit.ly/IDF09products
Also, all of the http://bit.ly/Clarksfield processors & the http://bit.ly/PM55chipset
Hope it helps!
Now i get it!
so "Clarksfield" (mobile Core i7) can basically operate in 3 modes:
1. 1 core @ 3.2GHz (what so called "turbo mode")
2. 2 cores @ 3.06GHz ( i imagine this your everyday mode)
3. 4 cores @ 2.26GHz (Stock speed when running to much threads but using all 4 cores)
see http://www.legitreviews.com/images/reviews/1084/slide5.jpg
Interesting new concept, i wonder if it can be hacked to run all 4 cores @ 3.2 GHz speed.
Now someone need to update Wikipedia with all these information.
I am waiting for the new 6 core processors from AMD. These new chips are twice as fast as the Core i7.
If you click your heels together 3 times while you say that, someday it might come true.
The AMD Magny-Cours shreds wPrime scores compared to the Intel Core i7. Do some research and you won't come across as another tool.
not just fast but,
