Layar goes 3D, reality now more augmented than ever
The Layar Reality Browser for Android has already managed to stir up quite a bit of interest in its current state, but it looks like the mad geniuses behind it aren't about to rest on their slightly augmented laurels just yet, and they've now announced that they're adding full 3D capabilities to the app. That, of course, doesn't mean you'll have to start wearing goofy glasses every time you walk outside, but you will soon be able to tag real-life objects with 3D text, or place 3D objects in a real-world space (like the Pac-Man fever dream above, for instance). Of course, the potential uses for the upgrade are limited only by the developers working with it, and they'll have a bit of time to toy around with things before the 3D-enabled version of Layer launches to the public in November. Head on past the break for a quick video, and hit up the link below for a closer look at what's in store.

TAKE THAT IPHONE!!!
Why would I "take that Iphone"? I have to have an android based device for this stuff to work.
/smart-mouth
i love it when awesome stuff becomes even more awesome!!
I really enjoy Android, but I wish more of its fans were capable of enjoying it without slamming the iPhone at every opportunity. Not because I like the iPhone better or anything, but because it's just annoying that Android is never given the opportunity to stand on its own merits. I'm sick of Android being the not-iPhone-phone, just let it be a phone.
I can't wait until you can map out a path and then see giant 3D arrows guiding your every turn.
That's what GPS systems do.
Theres a GPS unit with augmented reality on the market?
There bloody well should be.
In your car.
Like the overhead arrow in some 3D platform games and racing games.
Wikitude Drive?

That's just great. Last thing we need is all the drivers on the road focusing on the tunnel vision of a small phone screen rather than the road itself. How many children crossing the road will be killed because of the lack of peripheral vision?
I can already imagine people walking down the street with phones in front of their faces focused on a 3x4in rectangle in front of them. As you pass them on the periphery give them a quick punch to he stomach and ask "Did your phone see that coming?"
Oh my god. So I'll be able to take some acid, put on some 3d-glasses connected to my internet connection, and turn my house into a 3d rainbow land!?!?!?
Acid not needed but it would make things a whole lot crazier.
I can imagine John Major (ex UK Prime Minister) with his AR goggles on, reeling about his mansion, going "oh my, all those groovy shades of grey!!"
Spitting Image acid-flashback (for those of you who know this in-joke)....
Won't they be sued for Pacman copyright infringement?
Dat was em! Niet slecht :) (Not bad at all)
3d & pacman. brings back good memories of my sega genesis
A Gps unit with 3D augmented reality. That might be the coolest thing ever. Get on that Garmin.
Absolutely, edu3000 - the future of Navigation apps!
Tack on a pico projector (to the windscreen mount?) to generate a HUD (Head-Up-Display) for the windscreen overlay, and your mother has a brother called Robert (Bob's yer Uncle, geddit?).
Can't wait for the future...
It would be a cool novelty, but I assure you that it would never be even half as useful as a traditional GPS unit with a computer generated map.
Does it get the tagging from the net? If so this is so cool.
You could even make an whole virtual world that is on top of the real world that you can only see though this device.
It will be like a window to another dimension.
Awesome idea, layar was one of my favourite apps already, even moreso now!
I fail to see what was augmented, just some guy in a park watching his daily 6ft pac-man battles.
indeed. This simply looks like a typical sunday afternoon.
Who DOESN'T watch 6-ft real life pac-man battles in the park? Why do I need a phone to watch those?
Now if only we had some kind of reasonable platform to view this stuff through. It seems a little inconvenient to use a program like this through a phone. Where are my AR glasses??
C'mon. This isn't new! The bad guys on Scooby Doo have been doing this for ages. We'd all have this tech in our pockets if it weren't for those meddling kids!
Will end users be able to add 3D objects to the Layar world? I look forward to building 3D crap and leaving it all over town.
Am I the only one that doesn't really think Layar is that cool? I loaded it up a few times just to check it out but have never found it useful.
Same here.

Watching the demos of the 3D, why don't I see any actual background behind the camera (i.e. the REALITY)? Easy enough to do by playing back a video, I guess.
@mgers it is not tricked :-)
In this video you can also see the background: http://www.marketingfacts.nl/berichten/20090924_picnic09_layar_in_3d_demonstratie_met_claire_boonstra/
The trouble with videocamera's and phones is that it is very hard to take out the reflection. IRL it's much cooler!
