R2D2 turned into retro gaming shrine, includes head-mounted projector
We don't know exactly how to say this without overloading your nerd subsystem, but this R2D2 unit packs eight consoles, an integrated sound system and a projector for throwing your Jet Grind Radio sessions onto a wall. The only extras you'll need are the masses of controllers you see above and the steady constitution to not erupt into geek euphoria. Popular Science reader Brian De Vitis is the man you have to thank for this splicing of console goodness, and he's been kind enough to also provide a picture of the R2's mobo-laden innards. It awaits just past the break.

OMFG! THATS AMAZING! WANT NOW!
Thats my only reaction seeing this awesomeness. Theres so much win in this i can barely describe.
This is simply amazing. Just add all the new stuff and I'm set.
1. i literally have a boner, well a semi at least..... 2. why so many controllers, for someone to have to free time to pull this off i cant imagine there's a whole lot of friends in the picture
I can't stop saying HOLY SHIT.
Dreamcast for a brain = L33T!
My first thought is WHERE THE HELL DID HE GET AN R2D2 THAT BIG?? Did he build it?
My second thought is, i don't see a 360 or ps3.
It is awesomely cool but he could have saved time and effort AND cords if he just installed a ps3 and 360.
Too many for me.. I can't imagine what the place would like if my kids got a hold of that. Controllers everywhere!
Props to the maker.
nerd rage haha
That is so cool. I want one! Great job.
Anyone notice the fail in the picture?
Here's a hint, he as a NES lightgun / zapper in the picture. News is that you cannot use said gun on a projector, plasma or LCD TV.
But anyway nice mod.
That's the droid I'm looking for.
my cereberal nerd-tex is being overblown by awesomeness!
This is the dumbest, messiest thing I've ever seen.
I'm really surprised by how many of you would actually care to play the obsolete consoles jammed in there, and can deal with the wires going every which way. That would drive me insane.
To each their own, but I don't think cramming a bunch of old game consoles into an R2 casing is particularly skilled or useful. I owned every console there, and I still sold the collection years ago because they were *old* and I wasn't playing them anymore. Hell-- Why bother with all that hardware when a good PC with MAME and a few other emulators (and a single type of controller) could cover everything just as well?
But of course, I'm not nerd enough for a system like this. This just screams of someone trying to earn nerd cred, and from the looks of things here, he got it.
OK. So maybe it's a LITTLE cool.
But I still have no interest in playing old games.
Why keep a 67' Shelby GT 500? Why keep a 1992 Mazda RX7? They are all old and outdated. But its the fact that they are legendary vehicles. Same with the other gaming systems. Maybe not so much legendary but still holds ALOT of value amongst people who appreciate them. any body who appreciates the old days of gaming will gladly take an Atari or NES.
But as you said, To each their own.
@ZeroCorpse
Obviously you don't need ALL those controllers plugged in at one once, just the one's you are using at the time duh! And nobody gives is a shit if YOU have no interest in any games on those classic systems, that's why you sold yours, so somebody who CAN appreciate this stuff will get to.
I love what appears to be two classic Atari paddle controllers in the middle of the second row from the right. Sure the joystick got all of the attention and glory back then but the paddles were great for a little Breakout action...or another classic, Pong...without having to play right on the console...because the original Pong console didn't have controllers.
I believe that's an Atari 7800 controller right below the paddles, which means it should be able to play the 7800 games (from about the same years as the original NES) as well as most of the Atari 2600 games, too. Very nice!
NES light guns with a projector?
