T-Mobile negotiating to expand 4G service, Catherine Zeta-Jones going door-to-door
Word is that Deutsche Telekom (the parent company of T-Mobile) is now actively engaged in talks with Clearwire and MetroPCS to expand its 4G network. This isn't terribly shocking to hear, considering that most other providers (including AT&T, Verizon and Sprint) are already either heavy into negotiations or in the process of upgrading their infrastructure. Though the company hasn't yet said anything about planned expansions, word is its looking for the most "cost-effective" way to build nationwide networks capable of higher speeds.

Yes I would like a mobile makeover, preferably this October = ).
if they have t-mobile in my area and IF zeta-jones knocks on my door, i would probably switch, just let me know what day i need to call in sick b/c i would have to be at work during day time unlike those in the commercial..
"We're Married...Technically..."
*WHACK*
Still makes me laugh...and the disapproving look on my wife's face is PRICELESS!
@chanmanplanet:
Maybe it's Saturday or Sunday?
she can expand MY 4G service ;D
i thought they were already bringing 21mb/s hspda+ isn't that 4g speeds.
so they haven't decided on wimax vs LTE? is that what I am inferring from this article?
I think the engadget summary misstates the original article, and the original article misunderstands TMO's intention regarding 4G.
According to the article, TMO is looking for bandwidth. One would properly assume, since they've already announced the intention to build out 21Mbps HSPA network by the end of 2010, that the bandwidth is not for LTE/WiMax, but for the 21 Mbps HSPA network.
No, that is 3G (the spec extends very far, but American companies are very slow upgrading their networks). 4G is different in that voice and internet are simply data on the network; there is no separation between the two. Also, the max speeds can get up to 170Mbps, which in the real world may be 10-20Mbps. When you combine that with the fact that they will be shifting the main 3G band spectrum to the 700Mhz range from 1900Mhz or so and you'll be able to get connectivity within buildings much more reliably (basically everywhere you got an analog TV signal before the switch to digital). And one last benefit of switching to a lower frequency is that it travels farther, meaning more cell coverage with less towers (or the same number of towers supports more people).
But true nationwide for 4G isn't due until 2014-2015. Companies may quote an earlier number, but that's when they will START letting people use the 4G network publically with 4G phones and data cards, but that doesn't mean it'll be in your neck of the woods.
No, that's 3.5G speed.
I can't wait to have her expand my service.
+1
wait ....they already have a 3G network?
Yes.
..and it works better than AT&T's 3G network, at least it has for me. This is coming from someone who has a work iPhone and personal Tmobile phone. Again, experiences may vary from person to person, but I've found Tmobile to be much better (faster, voice calls handled better) overall .
yeah.. you may find that the US laggs quite far behind Europe in mobile infrastructure.
Our 3g network is much to be desired.
02 is abysmal on that front.
@Ahmed.S, that's not saying much. Both Verizon and Sprint's 3G network are a hell lot better than AT&T as well >.>.
But yeah, T-Mobile's 3G is pretty good, coverage, not so much, but they're working on it.
i'm in muscle shoals and tmobile is still on the freaking EDGE network. piss.
Include unlimited CZJ minutes in my plan, and I might consider switching...
Zeta can come a knockin at my door anytime. i love older women with hot cell phones.
I'm sorry... is there a cell phone in that picture? All I see is Catherine. ;-)
would a hot woman with an older cell phone be a deal breaker?
That picture of her isn't very flattering, IMO.
According to the leaked 3G schedule, I have to wait until winter to get it in Pittsburgh,
If they are smart, then they should have prepared all of the towers for 4G, while doing the 3G switchover.
It would make sense just to skip 3g in most areas and upgrade them straight to 4g (which id guess would be backward compatible?)
I can haz mobile makeover?
Dude, that's hilarious, made my afternoon. Thanks!
i'm waiting...
I'll take a Zee Jay.
Wait, they have a 4G network? I'm not trying to make a joke, this is just the first I've ever heard of it. I know they're actively expanding their 3G network and talking about making speed upgrades to it, but I have literally never heard a single word about a T-Mobile 4G network.
She can Zeta my Jones anytime.
who did the crappy crop job of this picture? i wanna see some cleavage!
she looks like the joker clown from batman
I can't even get tmobile phone service in my area =( I really would love to switch to them but can't do to no reception
does anyone have 3G service with T-Mobile here in the states? I never hear about it. Just wondering how it is for those that have it. I usually hear about how fast their EDGE network is, but never the actual 3G
Yes, I have 3G Northeast, MA-NH area
You can look up coverage on T-Mobile's website under coverage, then data coverage. They're focusing on bigger cities it seems, but they're expanding really fast; all that has been done under a year (for comparison, AT&T has been launching 3G for how many years?). They'll probably have it complete by next year; they're starting to offer 21mbps in Philly already. I used to have T-Mobile with the G1, and on average I got over 800kbps on their newly launched 3G 6 months ago... which isn't bad. And it always worked. The only bad thing was that it only covered the big cities. I now have Verizon with work and I get 700kbps to 800kbps (same speeds) but it's everywhere. I think T-Mobile has a lot of potential.
The term spotty comes to mind. But keep in mind that T Mobile started rolling this out last 4th quarter of '08 its still pretty early.
If you want the cheapest carrier that won't nickle and dime you to death and one of the better customer service experiences, that is T Mobile. But coverage and a pretty shitty selection of phones are a couple of the strings that are attached to getting that.
I just got T-mobile 3G in my area (Provo, Utah) 2 days ago. So far it's been much faster than AT&T in my comparisons but the coverage area isn't near as big. It works in less places but when it works, it works well.
Frack 4G. I'm more interested in the rumor that T Mobile may be in talks to buy Sprint. Dump sprint's shit customer service with T Mobile's and expand their phone line.......if I saw that reported I think I would get a hard on from the news.
stewey griffin : what's a boner?
Dude, Sprint's customer service is not as bad as it was, get over it already.
Then why did I have a relative drop them last week because they refused to refund unlimited internet that showed up on their account for that month even though they never asked for that feature. This is the same BS that occured when I was doing IT for an office of 500 who had Sprint. Same BS different date.
If CZJ knocked on my door and asked me to switch to T-Mobile, I would oblige.
Now that they got the spectrum issue behind them (no thanks to the heel-dragging of the FCC) I expect T-mo to keep pace with the rest of the industry, and maybe use the ability of big daddy DT to leap ahead.
She's a smart woman, in that picture she's got one eye on the phone and one eye on the photographer... now that's talent! :P
I'd gape.
I think that they should worry more amount getting service into dead spots than they should about 4g speeds.
Speed is nice and all, but what good is it if your phone has no signal.
While gadget junkies will love the extra speed, most people would truly be happier with better service.
Please God let her knock on my door...
Id drop my iPhone and ATT for a T-Mobile Moto V60 if she was selling it...
