While Intel was off
showcasing its latest and greatest in San Francisco, Microsoft was camped out over on the right coast with a bit of its own news. In a two-part announcement at the Embedded Systems Conference in Boston, the Redmond giant declared that Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 had been released to manufacturing, meaning that
Silverlight is now a huge step closer to getting all up in your next
embedded device. In more interesting news, the outfit also stated that its initial rollout of Windows 7 technologies (read: support for multitouch and gestures) to OEMs of these specialized devices had begun, meaning that low-power gizmos based on x86, ARM or MIPS processors (
smartbooks, anyone?) would soon have access to some of the same stuff used in Microsoft's own Surface. Feel free to dig into the links below for more, but we're warning you -- there's some serious technobabble behind those blue words.

The basis for Windows Mobile 7 perhaps?
Zune HD is built on top of WindowsCE 6.0 if that helps.
I'll have that Mojito mist please.
Who wants to pay for Win 7 when Android is free?
Who wants to pay for Windows when Linux is free??
/Confused
End users = Embedded system developers??
/Confused
All this stuff Ends up with the 'End' user right...? Right??
/Even more confused
Was hoping that WinMo 7 would be based on CE 7.0 but will more than likely be based on this version of 6.0.
Anyway bring it on!
Mmm, yes, I'll take a mojito as an entree...
I don't buy Window 7,i don't think that it is better than Window XP and Linux.i use Linux form 3 year and i don't have any problem with it.
Recent surveys show most businesses are sticking with XP. That represents 75% of Windows users.
So 75% Windows users agree with you about XP.
i think most business users would rather be on win7 or osx than xp. There are more factors to think about in business tho, than what the end-users would like. supportability, maintenance, training are just three.
working in IT, and having given vista a miss, i will be pushing to get win7 deployed asap.. albeit we're waiting for a CRM solution to be upgraded to support something newer than ie6 first.
Okay 75% of business are sticking to XP. But if you think about it, its only logical. Whenever you switch an operating system, you need to undergo a major overhaul of your current network and systems. For many business, especially large ones, this kind of change is not necessarily needed and that's why they continue to stick with XP.
I will not buy any device or Car with any Microsoft crap inside. Windows 7 is and will be the same POS all Win OS's have been.
if you have used a cash machine more than likely its running windows
All the self scan checkouts I have seen in the UK are windows based
Whayever you say you can't get away from Microsoft
How very open minded of you. Jackass.
...And of course, those self scan checkouts are rubbish- in the local Tesco there's always at least one that either isn't working or is running at a snail's pace or the chip & pin machine is broken. You might as well pay for four human checkout operators and the queues would probably go faster!
@diamonddogs
The tesco self checkout are rubbish. Try the Sainsburys ones (not that you are into testing self checkout or anything) they are much quicker and run smoother even they they are essentially the same as tesco with the orange interface.
Anyway...haven't felt the need to go to a manned checkout in months.
LOLWHAT Windows 7 technologies for gestures and multitouch are we talking about here? Last time I checked on the Lenovo it kinda sucked...
And it will only get worse with the use of more Microsoft "tech". Linux is the safest option for everyone. And yes, many cash machines run Windows and consumers/customers are feeling the full effect, vacuuming their cash before it can hit there wallets - http://www.itwire.com/content/view/25484/53/
guess what, who the hell wants to abandon MS at this point in time since the p.c. vendors have given them a disproportional lead in the pc realm.
Look, MS is a 5 million pound gorilla with so much money they could bail out the Federal Reserve.LOL.
The point is MS does the software stuff while their partners churn out the hardware. The marriage creates generic tech that anyone with the cash can purchase and then rebrand it and sell it as their own. MS gets licensing money and Balmer and company laugh all the way to the bank. And this is why you can get a desktop pc for $288.88 at Walmart.
Most tech s bullshit. It is generated, hyped and then abandoned to be sold at the flea market in shrink wrap. No support. Nothing!
The pc folks don't give a shit. They want to invest as little as possible and then clean up. That's why from the business man point of view MS and their OEM etc are the best "OFF THE SHELF SOLUTION" to getting in on the tech game.
What the hell are you talking about?
what the...??
Taxi!!
No thanks. XP Embedded is in my Samsung photo frame, and it manages to consistently crash with a Windows error dialog (yeah, with buttons that I can't click on because it's a freaking photo frame). How can a photo frame fail at doing the one thing it's supposed to do???
Guess Win7 will put some translucency on those error dialogs, wooo.
so that is XPs fault and not the photo software running on top?
It's the fault of whoever thought it was a good idea to use a nuclear warhead to fish.
Yes Windows 7 may fix your issues. A fresh install is always good and it will download the correct hardware drivers for your PC. It's likely you don't have the chipset drivers installed, or the ports have been limited.
