Motorola impresses with pre-loaded apps list for CLIQ
October 19th may be under a month away, but that's still an eternity in "waiting years." Thankfully, Motorola has posted up a handy guide that spells out exactly what kind of pre-loaded software comes with the CLIQ, and we've got to say -- the list is fairly impressive. For starters, users will get access to LastFM, an array of Google features, Yahoo! Mail (funny, real funny), Digg, Mint, Facebook, Twitter, Travel Channel, MTV and Amazon's MP3 Store. On top of all that, Moto's throwing in QuickOffice -- a piece that demands $9.99 on the iPhone -- as well as TeleNav Navigator, which has also found itself on a few other Android-based smartphones over the centuries. Hit the read link for the full list, but only if you don't mind the tease.

Wow, pretty impressive.
I really do want to get this in place of my G1, but no price yet.
Come on....lowball it just this once......
Ya, or at least freeball it...
Is it still free on t-mobile?
[last we read ON t-mobile it was]
I don't think "freeball" means what you think it means.
@McPOW: Oh, believe me, that was intentional.
Where in the hell is my Sholes!
http://www.drscholls.com/drscholls/wartremoval.jsp
Likewise. I don't care about anything on that piece o' crap network called T-Mobile. In fact, no one that I know even cared about a new Moto phone on T-Mobile. Everyone is concerned about the Sholes. It's no wonder Moto has fallen behind if they aren't paying attention to what people actually want.
Are you Gellin?
@ theillien
Did you really write that everyone is concerned with Sholes and than accuse Motorola of not listening to customers? If they are coming out with the phone everyone wants wouldn't that imply that they have been listening?
@theillien
Do you actually believe that announcing A855 (Sholes) and Cliq together would do any good to the latter?
Moto wants both the Cliq and the A855 to be successful during '09. And that wouldn't be possible if Cliq was underrated, always comparing it to the A855...
Bloatware for phone! Just give me the base OS and allow me to install apps when synced to my computer!
All we need is AOL and Earthlink and the circle is complete!
Oh, and RealPlayer!
Really? You want the base OS instead of the apps - preloaded for free - that you would probably want anyway? Seriously... if you want the base OS, just root the phone, but let the rest of us get the freebies.
You would still get the apps on a CD with the box. When you sync your phone, you can have the choice of loading the free apps.
You don't sync Android phones with your computer sir.
@Mike
Right, because there is no such thing as HTC Sync for Hero...
*rolls eyes*
Netscape is the browser
Wrong! Motorola integrates a lot of the software with widgets and into the GUI similar to how HTC does with the hero. The basic android OS is very boring from a GUI and widget perspective unless you root the phone. You want all this stuff preloaded, especially for the average idiot who won't know how to root the phone. If you don't want the programs then wipe.
It would be like buying an HTC Hero and complaining that they modiffied the GUI to make it more graphically friendly and useable. Why do you think people on G1's are running Hero roms. *sigh*
When i get a laptop loaded with junk apps, i don't think its impressive. But i guess this is different?
'Bloatware' term is only for MS , 'impressive' for others
*shrug* I'd consider the current best office app for android and arguably the best GPS nav for free, which normally cost a good amount of money including I think $10 a month for the nav system, a pretty good deal. The problem when they do it with laptops is that they shove normally free junk apps on it. This is more like if your next laptop came with full MS office and, lets say... Photoshop CS4(for lack of a better comparison) pre-installed for free.
I usually consider bloatware to be the crappy programs created by the retailer (i.e. dell and HP) that you will never use and constantly run in the background. I would use well over half of these programs, and I'm sure you could uninstall them if you wanted. I don't consider any of these to be bloatware.
Difference is that all that shit is in the startup and you have to go into MSconfig to remove it whereas these apps are not eating up resources in the background unless you want them to.
All the people that will give up the iphone or Pre for this say "I".
Ummm...no.
Close. If they just did away with that damn 528MHz Qualcomm processor for some of the new hotness(Snapdragon, Tegra, I don't care.) I'd take it over either of those any day. As is, no chance.
You what? Oh "aye"...
I think I'm getting the CLIQ for my step-daughter. It looks cheap enough for a 15-yo girl to throw around, but the real reason is to see weather or not I can use it full-time, or if I'll have to go with a more "hardware heavy" Android phone.
Interesting list there. So now the question stands...do I wanna pay the rumored $400 price for this phone or pay the $200 termination fee from tmobile and give verizon my money when the sholes is released. I'm hoping the sholes is offered for $200 w/ contract so with either choice I make, it will only cost me $400.
Where's that rumor from? The only pricing rumor I've seen was the accidental free on contract thing that leaked on the website, which I'm pretty sure was just a mistake. I haven't seen any other pricing rumors.
I am guessing that it is a full version of the Navigator (GPS) software... nice!
isn't the full version of Telenav $10/month? No thanks on another monthly payment.
Also, ovi maps with the n900 is included and also supports offline use (maybe not routing, but maps, yes). Not that it's too pertinent, but it does give you a basis for comparison.
They're not overly clear on what exactly "pre-loaded" means. Telenav is always free to install, but service costs $10 a month if you want it to do anything. If they've just installed something that you have to pay to use, then they aren't really doing you any favors. Quite the opposite, actually, they're probably putting it on your phone because Telenav paid them in order to generate interest.
It's not quite perfect: it comes with a Gizmodo app, but no Engadget app...
Huh... but in the picture it shows an engadget weird flying sticker thing... even in the original image.
The Engadget app would just have the same stories from the Gizmodo app, just 5 days later.
Oh yeah, I went there.
But the above graphic, both on Engadget and on the Moto website, shows the Engadget logo app icon...
@Look_Around_You: Aw snap!
+1 to Look_Around_You. I've been noticing that for quite some time. If they were 1930's newspapers, Josh would always be slamming his hat down and yelling at his reporters for getting "scooped" by Gizmodo again.

Quick office is 9.99 not 19.99 on the iPhone.
It's sort of a bizarre comparison to make. Why not compare it to what it would cost to download the same app from the Android market, since that would be your alternative? What does the iPhone have to do with anything?
i wonder if it works with windows 7's sync center....
Does win7 sync center sync with the web based google apps? Cause that's where this thing will sync it's data from.
I wouldn't get too excited yet, as these apps don't have enough info. Quickoffice could be the free viewer only, not the editor and Telenav could be a trial version too, as it costs a lot for up-to-date maps. I'll wait and see before I get too happy.
Excited about this phone? You better be with T-Mobile then since 3G is not compatible with that of ATT's!
It's a T-Mobile exclusive phone, what's your point? You can't port a phone between any two US carriers with 3G intact.
Who honestly wants AT&T's AWESOME Network anyways?
So is that an official Digg app?
We at Motorola ANDROID CLIQ can't wait to get the CLIQ (Dext)
This looks like nicer than the Instinc Q, I hope Sprint gets this soon, and I will switch! Though since they are getting almost every other new phone i doubt it will come anytime soon, if it does it will be one that only network worse than Tmobile... Nexthell. Though for Tmobile, this looks like an sidekick alternative, aren't they somewhat fighting themselves?
Wow, I can't believe my eyes (rub, rub, rub), I see EXCHANGE ACTIVESYNC!
For free, for real??
So...there isn't currently a Mint Android app. Is Moto writing their own, or might there be a real Mint app in the Market? That would be nice for those of us with other Android devices :-)
i don't get the "yahoo! mail" joke. Is yahoo! mail the new aol mail?
It's alluding that nobody, aside from spam-bots, really uses yahoo mail any longer. I had an account with them and stopped checking it over a year ago, due to relentless amounts of mountains and mountains of spam.
@persongr
And you seriously think that when the Sholes is finally released on a better network the Cliq isn't going to be compared to it?
Preloaded apps that will all be 3 versions old by the time you buy the phone! Wheeeee!!!
So THAT'S what all the 350 android developers that Motorola hired have been doing !!!
http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/09/28/motorola-building-up-350-person-android-team-nokia-also-sniffing-around/
This means there could be new applications that have not been on the Android Market yet, that could see the light of day first on this phone.
I've been in talks with Motorola for about a month and a half now about my app being built into their system. I am honestly still unsure on what they plan on doing with it...They are awful with their communications, but I'm signed up on their accelerator program while I wait for them to figure out what they are actually doing.
