The Engadget Show: Hands-on with Times Square
In addition to our full length Engadget Show, we'll be doing short segments on a wide variety of topics which we're hoping will delight, inform, or at least entertain for a few, precious moments.
Ever wondered who makes the outrageous displays in Times Square? Now you'll know. Josh talks to Meric Adriansen from D3 LED, the man who designs and builds those massive structures, and goes behind the scenes to see the rigs from the other side. Want to get deep inside of the art and science behind the light pollution that is -- literally -- New York's most visible spot? Watch the video... and subscribe to the RSS / iTunes feed below (we're still waiting on Zune Marketplace approval).
Also, if you missed the premiere of the show with Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, you can see it here.

THAT WAS AWESOME, GUYS.
Reason #5890725902 that engadget is the best tech site in the world :-)
Keep it comin'
How can Engadget adore any kind of screen that is not capacitive?!
Indeed, a nice opening to what should develop into a good show.
On a side note, Gizmodo had an idea to open their show covering the same subject, but they discovered their TV-B-gone remotes wouldn't work, and Jesus Diaz's requests to upload pr0n to the servers to display in Time Square were met with fail. Sucks for them.
Yeah, i'm REALLY impressed with the production value. Good job.
Guys this show is really awesome and I just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed the first full episode and now this segment. I hope you continue to do the show its great.
Best quote of the video: "There are no Macs in Time Square."
@TMPRIDE:
Dammit, now I must watch it.
And it was worth every second.
Great job, guys!
No Zune Love?
I second the motion set forth by Emiliano for increased Zune love post haste. All in favor?
Aye!
Aye!
Aye
Any opposed?
*slowly reaches for crowbar*
Yes, please continue zune support. It would be great to have a zune-resolution video podcast feed -- the 720p files are pretty large and my Zune80 can't take advantage of the resolution anyway.
Can we get the RSS feed for the iPhone/iPod/Zune format download? I want to have it auto download on my Pre but the 720p feed is overkill and doubt it'll even play.
I'm wondering about that. Maybe we ought to do a poll. Multiple feeds (which is a bit of a pain), or a single feed with just the non-HD version? What would you prefer?
A non HD version in a single feed, m4v would be good, I would think.
@Josh: Def. keep the 720p version. I don't see a link for the Zune and it'd suck to not have the 720p video for the Zune HD.
I'd prefer a poll, then everyone that visits the site can actually vote what they like instead of 5 people deciding for the rest.
i vote for the non-HD feed
@Josh:
Keep it 2 feeds. I enjoyed watching the first show on the big screen (though it took forever to d/l for some reason).
a vote for a 2 feeds one audio (podcast only) and another aduio podcast mixed with the engadget show in non-hd m4v on weeks you dont do the podcast and do the show instead, the second having these little bits added in when you do one.
Two feeds please (and iTunes Podcast channels). One in HD (720p) and one in iPhone/iPod/smartphone/etc. friendly 480p or even only 480*xxx.
HD feed if you want but please make the iTunes vodcast 480 and iPhone formatted. Want to subscribe in a smaller format that I can view on my phone.
My vote:
2 iTunes feeds, and 2 standard RSS feeds
For each flavor, one larger 720 format, and one smaller mobile-sized format (with the iTunes one being playable on the iPhone of course!)
Definitely 2 feeds (720p and iPod version). Of course it'd be nice if podcasts can do the same like TV shows or movies. You subscribe to the HD feed and get automatically the SD version, too - I don't know whether iTunes supports this though
You guys really surprised me with those tidy and neat fx. Quality stuff!
Tried to subscribe to the RSS M4V feed using Google Reader but to no avail. Any informed readers out there? Fill me in if there's something I'm missing (I've never even heard of a RSS M4V feed -- not a big iTunes user either)
Unfortunately, GReader doesn't support video feeds. Try something like feedreader.
Great work! Love the way you use embedded text :)
Yeah, it was swift, but I missed the first one the first time.
So when is Engadget gonna take their show on the road! Not everybody lives in NYC!
Engadget Canada! oh wait no good tech comes up here…
Matrox dude!
Hey! Why didn't you mention the companies name? Is it BARCO?
Haha. millions of dollars thousands of hours of works to make insane ad displays, and somehow their name was lost in it all.
Maybe after they get their planet-sized display?
D3. It was in color on the front of the machines driving the screens. www.d3led.com
Like it, love it, Gotta have the Engadget Show.
Is it wrong to crave for this show? Is it bad that I hope that any day, boom, there will be another one? Is it?
The FX reminded me Fringe.
Great. Just awesome.
AmAzInG !
Awesome
that was full of win. thanks engadget!
Can someone please tell me why there's a guy to the right showing affection @ 00:28. This is engadget right??
It's called 'outside' and you should go there once, they have things called 'streets' with 'people' which are humans walking around freely being humans, anyway take some diazepam first then try it, but not too much (of either)
Great job!
I'm loving the new Engadget shows/Videos Keep em comin!
Very well done. Great job.
