Oh, brother.
TomTom just hit us up with the real details on its iPhone car kit
slip this morning, and we've got a feeling you won't like what it has to say. It confessed that the posting was indeed a mistake, and thus, the pricing was also incorrect. If you'll recall (c'mon, it wasn't
that long ago), the Apple store listing explained that the £99.99 car kit included the iPhone app, when in reality, that price definitely does not include the app. Jump on past the break for TomTom's official statement, which now curiously states that the "iPhone 2G" will be compatible with the car kit, yet doesn't mention the iPod touch at all.
TomTom unveils the price of the TomTom car kit for the iPhone
London, 24 September 2009 – TomTom announces today that the TomTom car kit for the iPhone will have a recommended retail price of £99.99
The TomTom car kit will be available this October and will be sold separately from the TomTom app. It will be compatible with the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS.
All further details on the car kit will be made available soon.
Seriously? $100 for this garbage? I'd rather use a better service AND save money... as in get Navigon.
What this needs is a radar detector built into it too. Then I could justify the cost :)
TomTom I think that you just p*55ed off 99% of your apple fanbase. This price is just a joke. I have always been a TomTom fan but now, I'll not only go and buy a new SatNav, I'll buy one that isnt yours. I really wanted this for my iphone, but your pricing is unadulterated sheer greed. That is 3 customers in one family you have just lost - clever , clever marketing.
Yeah, I'm out of this deal too at that price. I just recently pushed the button on Navigon and it is fabulous!! I'm have had no issues with a GPS signal and I travel through the canyons in Los Angeles. It works flawlessly without a cradle.
Give it a few weeks, the hong kong 9.99 alternatives will be on eBay
Given that the Tom Tom APP isn't the best GPS software out there either, I'm not sure why anybody cares about this anymore anyway. Just buy the Navigon software. Its got text to speech, lane assist, live traffic (or that's coming), iPhone music controls, etc all of which Tom Tom doesn't have, and its cheaper than the Tom Tom software too.
Its POSSIBLE this cradle (overpriced that it is) will work with the Navigon software (I'd wait for a review to state this definitively), but otherwise, you can just ignore this thing.
Currently (IMHO, having used both), Navigon is a superior product at a cheaper price. The latest addition of the text-to-speech makes the Navigon offering even more appealing.
Tomtom really needs to get the price of their app down and needs to add the text-to-speech functionality. Already 2 updates from Navigon since it was released, and nothing from TomTom, despite the fact that it doesn't seem to be able to find Canadian addresses from my contacts.
Hopefully this will work with Navigon which works better... Not that i''m going to buy one, but maybe the homeboy shopping network will have them on sale soon....
Uh wow. Way too overpriced. No way I'm buying this now.
Wow. Too expensive, TomTom. Good luck with the stalled launch though.
I was going to be nice but when you think about how much this will cost in US dollars - you'd have to be a fool/tool to buy this kit. Just buy a separate unit. It'll work better and be cheaper. What a joke!
Just installed Co-Pilot 8 for £25.99, bought universal car mount for £15.
Total Cost: £41.99
Just read the reviews on the app store... Tom Tom are not the best option here.
So what about all those that hit the button when it was first up will Apple honour the first offer?
