TRENDnet claims 'world's smallest' Wireless N USB adapter crown
We know, you get it -- companies are making extremely small peripherals lately. If it ain't thumb drives it's microSD card readers. Now the kids at TRENDnet want to make sure that all you newly-minted 802.11n users aren't left in the dust, so they've proudly announced TEW-648UB. Billed as the world's smallest Wireless N USB adapter (take that, Mvix!), this guy features one-touch WPS technology and Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) Quality of Service prioritization of video, audio and gaming traffic. Available soon with an MSRP of US $24.99.
World's Smallest Wireless N USB Adapter Now Available from TRENDnet
TORRANCE, Calif. –September 22, 2009–TRENDnet, a best-in-class wired and wireless networking hardware brand, today announces the availability of the world's smallest 150Mbps Mini Wireless N USB Adapter, model TEW-648UB. The ultra compact form factor is slightly larger than a U.S. quarter, measuring a remarkable 1.3 inches (3.3 cm) from end to end.
The 150Mbps Mini Wireless N USB Adapter connects a laptop or desktop computer to a wireless n network at up to 6x the speed and 3x the coverage of a wireless g connection. One-touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS technology eliminates the hassle of entering complicated codes in order to connect to a wireless network. Simply press the WPS button on a compatible router (most TRENDnet routers feature a WPS button), then press the WPS button on TRENDnet's 150Mbps Mini Wireless N USB Adapter, confirm that you want to connect, and you're connected!
Advanced wireless encryption protects your valuable data. Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) Quality of Service prioritizes important video, audio and gaming traffic to create a premium wireless experience.
"We have looked high and low and are confident in our claim that the TEW-648UB is the smallest adapter on the market today. In fact t it is half the size of the average wireless N USB adapter." stated Zak Wood, Director of Global Marketing for TRENDnet. "Despite its' diminutive size, it performs well. We welcome all independent tests against any other 150Mbps (or 1x1) adapter on the market today. The adapter features an equally small price tag. With a predicted street price in the low $20 range, this adapter sets a new price-to-performance standard."
The 150Mbps Mini Wireless N USB Adapter, model TEW-648UB, has an MSRP of US $24.99.
This product will be available from all of TRENDnet's online, retail, DMR, and distribution partners.

25 bucks? That's NICE!
Though I still don't need it...
Trendnet can make the world smallest 802.11n adapter, and it only costs $24.99, yet for the XBOX 360 Microsoft will only make an adapter that is twice as large as this and costs (at least) $79.99.
Anyway, this is awesome news!
Same chipset as Jensen Air:Link 25150. I bought this one off ebay MONTHS ago, two for around 24$ It's one millimeter longer.
Don't you mean 1 CM (as in 10 mm)... otherwise I'm buying 10.
10!
Meh. I'd like to see this in XpressCard flavour, and while they're at it they might throw in wireless broadband, or maybe an SSD. I have a 3-year-old HP laptop with an XpressCard slot with nothing to put in besides the laptop's remote...
I've always thought more could be done with Expresscard...
Or £10 (UK) for a PCI card (mini PCI for laptops) that is completely hidden away!?
Only good if you have a spare Mini PCI on your laptop though, or think netbooks.
What netbook doesn't have a mini-pci?
So they couldn't find a laptop with USB ports on the right-hand side so their press photo shows their logo right-side-up? ;P
Hmmm That little guy could fit in a mobile device...
And Microsoft has the nerve to sell their wireless N adapter for the 360 for $100 and a B/G adapter for $70 lmmfao...
Unfortunately, the antenna is so small that you can't be any further than 4 inches from the access point.
Anybody knows what chipset? I hope it is not a broadcom crap.
My TrendNET TEW-423PI PCI card (wireless G) I bought last year for my desktop uses the Atheros AR5005GS chipset, if that's any indication. I had to use a generic chipset driver over TrendNET's though, for it to function correctly.
It's not the size that matters, it's how you use it.
Would this work with an Xbox 360 ?? Or any other USB adapter ?? Or does it have to be Microsoft's ??
Now if only they'd do one that was 5GHz
I know... I thought that was half the point of switching to N, to have a less congested radio space.
Things like this just get more and more pissed at Xbox by the day.
After all the motion stuff gets announced in 2010 I may be going PS3.
Free charging controllers.
Free online.
Free WiFi
BluRay.
just get one already. you are obviously not fussed about the actual games you play. it's a damn games console... i buy it for the games
this one is close:

I'd be more excited about this if I hadn't already actually USED a TrendNET product.
All I can say is that I hope they write better drivers for their newer products than for their TEW-423PI PCI card (wireless G) I bought last year for my desktop. Even from just one room away (like 20 feet, tops) from my FiOS router, with the official driver from their website installed, I only ever got one or two out of five bars of wireless signal. It was miserable trying to have to disconnect and reconnect every five minutes, just to use the internet at home.
I ended up figuring out that it uses the Atheros AR5005GS chipset, and found a driver for that that works excellently (and just updated through Windows update last week!). But by all indications, TrendNET seems like a second or third-rate company with terrible support. You get what you pay for.
If you guys happen to try this out and it turns out great, please let me know.
Ooh, sorry, messed up the capitalization - should be TRENDnet, not TrendNET. Don't want to disparage the reputation of a corporation so dear to my heart.
