Video: Intel's Light Peak running an HD display while transferring files... on a hackintosh
Intel just did a pretty impressive demo of its new Light Peak optical device interconnect, driving a greater-than-HD display while saturating an SSD RAID all over one cable, but we couldn't help but notice the monster Frankenstein test rig on stage was running OS X -- looks like someone's violating their EULA! Video after the break.

No big deal just funny :p
Yeah, just amusing. I doubt Apple cares. I LOL'd, is what I'm saying here.
And that Nilay is why the comment system needs an overhaul. I know you guy don't have anything to do with the site but tell the website designers and maintainers to do something please.
Yep,
it was just sort of funny.
I doubt Apple cares.
I LOL'd, is what I'm saying here.
Yep.
It was just sort of funny.

I LOL'd,
is what I'm saying here.
We get it Nilay you LOL'd. lmao
yah, seeing that Intel and Apple are all butt-buddy now I'm sure they couldn't care less, but good observation!
Intel should send me over that rig :)
Isn't it just a disassembled mac pro?
Yep.
It was just sort of...
...funny.
I doubt Apple cares.
I LOL'd.
That's what I'm saying here.
Yup, kinda funny.
I personally doubt Apple cares, though.
What I'm trying to say here is that I LOL'd

Well, I guess the EndUserLicenseAgreement doesn't apply to (not-EndUser) Intel.
Intel make Apples processors, ergo, intel can put OSX on whatever the hell system they like.
Um, bullshit. They are indeed an End User of the system. Did they write Mac OS X? I didn't think so. They're users. Doesn't matter if they happen to supply one of many chips inside it.
Meanwhile, I agree with the consensus that there's nothing that interesting here - just smirk-worthy is all. :)
@Jushua,
End user != developers, suppliers, vendor
End user == retail customers
If you seriously think that Intel does not have express agreements with Apple to test OS/X on new platforms then you need to have your head examined. Whether or not they have permission to show said platform in public in another question entirely.
Besides, for all we know the hardware inside the box they were using might be a perfectly official mac motherboard.
I'm with glenn s, it's probably a dev mobo that'll eventually end up in Cupertino so all Intel needs to do is slap an Apple sticker on the box and they're legit.
Absolutely right. I'm sure Intel not only has permission, but that Apple is overjoyed that they're using OSX to test out their latest technology.

That's one of the dumbest comments I have ever seen on Engadget which is really saying something.
*bows*
why assume that was a hackintosh? i dont get it
Oh boy, let the war begin........................
InsanelyMac Forums... now sponsored by Intel.
Light Peak enabled Hackintosh... Intel-ligence left outside
Wow, kinda ghetto Intel. Wonder if Apple will do anything about it.
Actually its kinda epic that somebody went thru everything to do this (installing osx isnt exactly simple on a vanilla pc)
It's pretty easy. Insert boot disc. Swap for retail DVD, install. Boot off boot disc. Install bootloader. Possibly install some kexts or EFI strings. Done.
I wouldn't be surprised if they used Apple parts. They do make their processors, after all.
They also make a good deal of the chipset as well depending on the model, including wireless, audio, southbridge, and video in older models. Intel is also largely responsible for EFI, a staple of Intel-based Mac systems.
Maybe Apple will be first who adopt it in it's electronics - like Wifi n and etc.
They're using wifi-n-draft for years. It's just a firmware upgrade issue now.
Yeah im guessing Intel has all sorts of development boxes running all sorts of operating systems. I wouldnt call that a hackintosh by any stretch of the imagination
i just drill on the SSD RAID there
I think it just shows that intel wouldn't be able to pull all that stuf off running windows.
apparently you didn't see the videos a couple days ago.
I doubt its a "hackintosh" as intel provides a lot of the hardware that goes into making the mac-compatible motherboards inside Mac Pros and other products. They get a special exception here.
'apple sues intel for violation of EULA and switch to AMD'
Apple couldn't switch to AMD, it'd make their computers cheaper.
Who knows, it could be an actual prototype that both Apple and intel are working on.
Turns out, you're more right about your intuition
Or perhaps its a build up to an Apple Announcement.
Kinda funny.
I'd make no mistake tho, they are definitely working on this technology together, it's no coincidence that they are showing off this tech on OSX.
No Intel are not working with Apple on optical interconnects, Intel works with Intel they are the worlds biggest chip maker by a large margin, what would Apple have to do with optical interconnects ? they make consumer electronics !
You're right, Apple has never embraced or promoted a new and emerging interconnect technology.
Dunno what I was thinking.
Has it occurred to anyone that maybe intel had permission to use Mac OS X?
Haha, that's what I was thinking. Couldn't this just be a heavily modified MacPro? Or even a prototype MacPro? If anyone has one I'm sure they would.
For that matter I'm pretty sure intel has all the official Apple TPM chips seeing as how they make the things, so how is this a hackintosh?
Apple and Intel are working jointly on this. It's one of Apple's latest inventions, and Intel is working with them to bring it to fruition.
See this article: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/09/apple-inspiration-behind-light-peak-optical-connection-standard.ars
Or could it be a version of the Enlightenment UI on linux?
You wouldn't want to trust your presentation to windows, that's suicide.
"So you'll notice that this scanner... woah. Uh..."
"That must be why we're not shipping Windows 98 yet."
wow...slow news day huh?
It's only a hackintosh if OS X is running on non Apple approved HW...seeing as Intel makes the most important component for Apple...this should be a non issue....the article should read "Intel uses OS X to show case super awesome Light Peak tech instead of Windows"...yea i went there...
There is also sub for that.
