How would you change HTC's Touch Pro2?
HTC's Touch Pro2 is the cat's meow on paper, and the US carriers that have managed to score it have demonstrated as much with their outrageous MSRPs. But with Android devices popping up in more places than ever, is the TouchFLO'd Windows Mobile experience really cutting it? We've already shared our own opinions about one of the best specced phones to land this side (and that side) of the Mississippi, but as you know by know, this space is all about you. If you've splurged on the Touch Pro2, why not give us a shout in comments below and let us know how that decision is working out for you? Feel free to mention the carrier as well, particularly if you've got some beef with reception. And... go!

Push-To-Talk on sprint
faster processor!!!!!!! the original TP was slow enough, what the hell was HTC thinkin puttin it in this>?
Some of the original TP's problems seemed like a processor issue, but weren't. They were driver issues.
Although I admit I'm a little worried about whether the TP2 will be able to handle full flash when Adobe finally releases it, the phone as-is is snappy and more than fast enough for all of my other uses.
Also, depending several factors, this processor can be overclocked more than 200mhz. Developer is still trying to understand and address some people's less stable configurations, but others have very stable performance already. http://www.nuerom.com/BlogEngine/post/2009/09/08/Yet-more-notes-on-overclocking.aspx
I cringed when I first heard this phone was getting the standard issue Qualcomm 528mhz cpu. Then I tried the phone and I was pleasantly surprised. They fixed the bottleneck on this CPU and got the drivers right. It's super fast and blows the doors off my Advantage 7501x (624mhz xScale). I handles DVD rips no problem and 3D games (like Xtrak) run great.
Still, it has it's flaws. The biggest to me being the lack of a D-pad. You know why people hate D-Pads? Cause manufacturers kept adding these terrible unergonomic d-pads onto practically every phone. It put a bad taste in most peoples mouths. If they gave us a real d-pad that resembled anything found on a real joystick, people would use the d-pad a lot more. Hopefully the d-pad on the Motorola Cliq will be as useful as it looks.
More cowbell!
Put Android on it.
You mean WinMo 7 right?
Lower the price Sprint!!!!!
Someone should run the Acid3 test, on the WinMo 6.5 Mobile IE browser & post the results here. It would be interesting to see, if Microsoft has improved its standards-compliance:
http://acid3.acidtests.org/
These are the results, for the major desktop browsers:
Chrome 2.0 - 100/100
Safari 4.0 - 100/100
Opera 10 - 100/100
Firefox 3.5.3 - 93/100
IE 8 - 20/100
An even more interesting comparison:
iPhone 3GS - 100/100
Zune HD - 5/100
Would check but still can't unlock the CDMA version of the touch pro 2 for the WinMo 6.5 mobile ie browser. WinMo 6.1 opera throws me a 75/100
24/100 on Verizon BB Tour.... -_-
Skyfire 1.1.0.13052 (on WM6.5, TouchPro) gets a 52/100, but it can play in-browser Flash (even supported Hulu until it was blocked).
Opera Mobile 9.5 (WM6.5) scores a 59/100.
Its Windows Mobile. No way I'm buying a WM phone no matter how much lipstick they put on that pig.
Make it run Android and have a capacitive screen.
A capacitive screen would be nice, but i do like having a stylus :)
The camera could be a bit better, maybe a 5MP instead of the 3.2
But the thing that would really make it amazing, is mozilla releasing Fennec...
No No WinMo. Android Seulement for me.
Android.
A capacitive screen and Android. Windows Mobile sucks.
Another vote for Android and a capacitive screen.
I think you meant to say WinMo 7.
STOP SAYING THAT.
Oh yeah Quikboy, WinMo 7 kicks androids butt, except that it DOESN'T EXIST.
Go back in a time machine and release this instead of the original touch pro.
One year later, this is already a has been.
1. Better camera - the quality of the pictures is beyond poor IMO.
2. For the T-Mobile version, the 'Home' button is useless and should be the standard Windows button like it is on all other varients of the phone. I don't know what they were smoking to think that was a good idea.
3. 3.5mm phone jack on the GSM (T-Mobile) version.
4. Capactive touch screen would be nice since I rarely if ever use the stylus.
I do have to say the screen resolution is Epic Win! ~250 DPI is amazing for reading ebooks and video/picture display. I don't think I could live with a lesser screen now.
this tmobile version does not do it justice, very poor all around. but as far as the camera goes, a larger camera would just mean a thick, more expensive phone. the sensor would have to be a lot bigger for any larger camera and wouldn't necessarily take better pictures. this phone takes the best pictures of any phone i have ever seen (in person). as for the capacitive screen, we will see on the leo.
I need an OK button for simple one handed ops, perhaps a double tap on the zoom slider???. The Tab key on the TyTN II was useful & un-cripple the Telstra (Australia) version.
I'm surprised no one seems to have mentioned the lack of the dpad--that's the single biggest complaint I've heard over the past 6 months. I'm not really in favor of losing screen real estate for it, or for making the device taller, but I would mind an alternative means to the same one-handed friendliness end.
A trackball, more flexible uses for the zoom bar (hacks for that are undoubtedly on the way), zoombar + a track wheel, whatever.
I'd also love to see dual SIM, daytime readable LCD screen tech (see pixelqi laptop with "'e-ink' mode"), and less chrome (sprint, VZW, and even TMo strike my fancy more than ATT and HTC's standard design--durability matters).
Android = No Microsoft Exchange support or native Office features. This is a business class phone and they market it as just that. Android isn't there yet--maybe version 2. maybe 3. But putting Android on this phone over WinMo would be a huge mistake--right now--and they know it.
If you're a serious business user and heavily rely on having your email, calendar, contacts & everything in sync at all times, Android can't do that for ya yet buddy. Blackberry & Winmo are business-focused devices. Android & iPhone have potential to take over the business markets but not there yet.
To answer the main question, I miss having more physical buttons that I can use for 4 of my most frequently used apps. AND a dedicated VoiceCommand / voice control button like most Windows Mobile devices have. I hate having to look at the screen every time I want to open Contacts, Calendar, Tasks or eWallet. That's one silly "trend" that all device manufacturers are following--removal of all buttons, and it drives me crazy. Believe it or not, people still like to be able to quickly launch a program/feature WITHOUT having to look at the screen. It's faster. And physical buttons is the only way to accomplish that aside from mind control. Something we're not even close to seeing.
Anyway enough ranting. The TouchPro 2 is great for me right now. I'm aware of the shortcomings of Windows Mobile 6.1, but 7 is right around the corner (and we've been patient enough).
On a sidenote, if the d*** iPhone had a slide out keyboard, they would have a much bigger piece of the business market. iPhone DOES have Exchange support, now, something that most (serious) companies have these days. But it doesn't have physical keyboard. Why can't companies make the best of both worlds on each platform? lol
We won't let iPhones on our Exchange Server yet ... the device level encryption software is terrible. Our in house hacker read e-mails and calendar items off of a locked, test iPhone ... only took him 10 minutes to get into it.
If you hold down the send button it will activate voice command.
You know, HTC-branded HTC Magics have Exchange support, like the one I have. If HTC were to make an Android business device, *OBVIOUSLY* they would include Exchange support, and therefore make the device HTC-branded, not Google-branded.
my changes: No WinMo & replace with Android
i'd put android on it.
No WinMo 6.1 - Put WinMo 6.5 or even 7!
7 ain't out yet
completely gut all of the HTC software and have a raw winmo interface with a hardware messaging button on the face of the phone.... i would like to upgrade my mogul, but need a winmo phone that is functional like the mogul, not flashy.
Hey CP ... See my comment a few posts down ... I'm obviously too inept to reply to your post properly!
Best regards,
Brad

Android
You can do this ...
-- Scroll along the bottom all the way to the right to the "Settings" area, click "All Settings"
---- Go to the "Personal" tab
---- Click on the "Today" icon
---- Click on the "Items" tab
---- Turn on the items that you want to see on your home screen ... scroll all the way to the bottom and turn OFF "TouchFlo 3D"
---- Click OK
Second thing you do ...
From inside of All Settings, Personal ...
---- Click on the "Buttons" icon
---- Change the assignment for "Send Key (Hold)" to "Messaging"
------ You could also use the " * Favorites" key ... but you would have to slide the keyboard out each time to hit that key
---- Click OK
There ya go! You can upgrade from your Mogul now. :-)
Being a Microsoft Exchange Server Engineer, I'm a hard core Windows Mobile fan myself ... heck, I don't really even like BlackBerry, but I have to support them. I didn't think I would like the HTC Touch Pro 2 because of TouchFLO 3D, but now I think it's awesome! HTC really deserves some applause for this device. TouchFLO 3D coupled with the responsive touch screen really makes this device VERY finger friendly.
ARGHHH ... This post was meant to be in reply to CP's post about replacing his Mogul with a Touch Pro 2 ...
Thanks for the tip...I can finally use my phone...
QQ: When Im in my Inbox and I select "Menu", I get a popup where the font is 16pt rather than 8pt...Do you know how to fix this
All in all this is a rock solid, business class device.
I agree with everyone above who says this device should have been released a year ago and that the original Touch Pro should have never been born. But anyone who has followed HTC for the past three years knows that they've been a company in the making. From the very beginning they were always trying to pack more technology into the space provided regardless of whether it performed well or not. Well, for the first time in HTC history, they've done it! HTC has learned from its past mistakes and they've done a killer job at nailing a first rate device with all the bells and whistles right out of the box. Not to mention the fact that they even had the forethought to install "QuickGPS" on the Verizon Wireless models so that you could use the built in GPS with Google Maps or any other navigation program you like. Verizon also didn't stand in way like they usually do and make HTC cripple the GPS. The only thing Verizon Wireless hasn't done is made their aGPS servers that are on the verizon network available to the public ... so HTC went ahead and loaded QuickGPS (which accesses a third party aGPS database to allow the onboard GPS to attain a much faster position fix). Within 10 seconds of launching Google Maps I know exactly where I am within a few feet, it's great!
I'm very impressed with this device and am recommending it to all of my users who are up for contract renewals.
Best regards,
Brad
Look like the HTC LEO with keyboard.
How bout some actual storage space.
Well it needs a laser pointer. That would make it awesome.
I HAVE THE T-MOBILE VERSION OF THE TP2 AND LOVING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONLY THING I WOULD CHANGE, WOULD BE HAVING QUICK ACCESS TO A SIDE RINGER ON/OFF SWITCH AND THAT WOULD MAKE THIS PHONE PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OTHER THAN THAT---IT IS THE BOSS!!!!!!!!!!
Lay off the caps lock, will ya?
I'll settle for it being in my hands, and for it to be mine.
Add:
- Camera flash
- Capacitive multitouch screen
- 32GB integrated flash memory (if Apple can do it, why don't any WM phones offer this for the extremely high price they cost?)
- 3.5mm headphone jack (across all models, not just some. Yes, this means get rid of the stupid proprietary port for sound)
- And get rid of WM and use something that's actually worthy of that hardware. A complete paradigm shift is desperately needed for WM - it needs to be redesigned from the ground up.
I just bought the Touch Pro 2. Overall, I give it a thumbs up. Had the Touch Cruise II before. This is much improvement.
I added SPB Shell and the interface is much improves - iPod-like.
Pros
* very complete -has just about everything you need
* screen is awesome
* keyboard works well.
* zoom function makes web pages come alive
* audio is decent - I downloaded 10g of music into the micro sd card
* gps locks up quickly. Copilot works great on this
* camera is decent - good enough to work with World Card and recognize business cards
* standard WinMo functions work quickly
Cons
* capacitive screen would be nice - occasionally need to bare down with finger nail to get it to work
* more buttons - I miss those - voice recording, for example - use it all the time
* instant rotate screen - I downloaded a free app. , but it barfs occasionally
