iPhone MMS is now live!
All you've gotta do is plug that iPhone 3G or 3GS into iTunes, run the teensiest of updates, restart the phone, and you can at last make that fashionably late entrance into the 21st century you've always dreamed of. That's right folks, MMS on the iPhone is live on AT&T at last.

First! It's about time, AT&T!
It's amazing. Almost like Star Trek! A phone that can use MMS via its operator! What's next, sliced bread?
oh man, that's gonna be HUGE i can tell
Yahoooooooooooooooooooooo!
Bing! Bing! Bing!
BOOM. There it is, and I am now sending MMS messages.
Surely the headline should read 'iPhone MMS is now live in USA!'
Everywhere else in the world has had this since Apple finally introduced it, months ago.
This is just a Fad
Vanillacide,
Interesting distinction, but the fact of the matter remains, that for 2+ years, Apple's iPhones didn't even have the *ability* to send/receive MMS!
When my Grandmothers flip phone in 2004 had this feature, there's no excuse for Apple to not have had it integrated into the iPhone from day 1. This is a joke, and a pathetic one at that.
Woot MMS?!
Crickey its 1998 all over again...
hey everyone I predict that Micheal Jackson will die in the year.....
2009....
June 25th....
Also I predict that Apple will come out with a cell phone in 2007
4GB and 8GB...
call me crazy!
WindowsFTW,
Say hi to your grandma for me.
Being that this is a feature that should've been standard on all iPhones 3 years ago, I think Apple at least owes it to the first-gen iPhone owners to enable it on their phones too.
@Big_ass_troll 1998? I believe you're thinking 2002.
Surely the headline should read, "Apple Invents MMS, Makes it Available to iPhone Users at No Extra Cost!"
Update broke my Internet Tethering! ;(
Brilliant comment tennseven.
tennseven,
well played ;)
My update: I called AT&T to make sure that MMS is free without any hidden fees.
Surprisingly, I got a call back an hour later with the same rep reminding me that they're still "working out the kinks" and if I'm having trouble, it's because of the high amount of traffic. So far, I'm doing pretty good.
now.... if we could just get customizable text/mms tones without having to jailbreak... I miss those (you know, like every other phone I've ever owned, including a monocrome single-internal-screen sprint flip from 2001).
Finally you guys caught up. In Europe we've had MMS for some months now. Quite ironic, considering Apple is American and at first the iPhone was sold in America only at first..
WindowsFTW,
How apt of you to assume I'm an Apple fanboy and have an iPhone. I'm not and I don't. I just can tell an asshat Windows fanboy when I see one -- as if the name wasn't a giveaway.
I'll be back later, I'm going to go play some ODST on my Xbox 360. Try not to write any more verbal nooses for yourself when I check back on my Ubuntu machine.
Enjoy your blind brand allegiance, I'll continue being objective.
Has anyone else not been able to launch an app after this upgrade? Or is it just me? I restarted and still nothing.

So petty and zealous are we that we have to make it a point to mention Linux as we raise our clinched fists in the air in defiance of Big Brother!
Repeat after me, "we will not acquiesce to tyranny, but rather lead the fight against it! "
Good thing the iPhone had all the other stuff... slick web browser, great music player, apps, games, etc...
You know... people actually liked their iPhones even when it couldn't send MMS. What does that say?
People have tunnel-vision, follow trends, are conformists, suffer from cognitive dissonance in many cases, are sheep, are often oblivious of other choices, and are suckers for clever marketing.
The iPhone is still perhaps the most *lacking* "smart" phone on the market, and UI wise, it's really not any better than most of its *contemporary* competitors, nor are its apps any more special than what can be found on a wide array of other devices.
No argument here.
iphones users...welcome to 2001. i have some hot tips for you:
WorldCom, Tyco and Enron...BUY BUY BUY !!!! oh yeah, dont get hd dvd.
Michael Scrip: They also liked 'em before they had copy and paste, not to mention every other flaw mention in this thread... and the exorbitant additional cost you pay every month. What does that tell me? Consumers are willing to pay stupid amounts of money for shiny things because other people do. I have yet to pay the Apple tax... though I will run OS X Snow Leopard on this HP tablet. :) I'll consider throwing some money towards Apple, for the first time, when they release their tablet.
next .. video calling .. oh wait! .. iPhone 4 ETA??
Leave it to Apple and AT&T to innovate....
i bet at&t is gonna make a shit load of cash on this one even though they've come in late..... lol
this is just PATHETIC!
too bad its taking about a minute or so to send the message.....
Can't believe it took this long! lol. But yeah, hopefully the sending speed picks up.
I think everyone that owns an iPhone should send out like 20-30 mms's and just bring down AT&T's network and if you have a 3GS send a video.
Oh yeAh. We should see if they really prepped their network for this. I'm sending my whole photo album to different iPhone users.
Other iPhones than the 3GS can send videos saved from emails. AT&T doesn't stand a chance >:D
I'll be sending screenshots of text messages instead of the actual text message from now on.
Word!
I have to say, this is probably the funniest story all day, for so many reasons.
Hahaha
seriously, i had this shit on my razr 5 years ago
I'm still surprised that IPhones can call other phones that are not apple-made. :)
It's breaking news, yo!
All the iPhone users should get together and have a Welcome to 2002 party!
Apparently though the iPhone 1.0 users aren't invited.
Wow, my SE K800i came with this and multitasking out of the box, what an iPhone ripoff. Once again, Apple leads and everyone else follows.
right, all the nerds making fun of this are the same ones who were complaining that Apple didn't have it a year ago...
So, if you guys just dropped off the face of the Earth, Apple could get on to things that really matter: beefing up OS X Mobile and prepping the Tablet.
Everyone else got by without this stupid outdated tech. Texting pictures to your friends..? Meh... Enjoy, girls.
oh believe me, many people use MMS to text pictures of themselves enjoying girls...
whooooo!!!!!! I had to restart my iPhone for it to fully show up. Time to bring down the network!
NOTHING in NYC. I am running a jailbroken 3GS with 3.0.1 software.
You need version 3.1 installed on your iphone.
I have a jailbroken 3GS with 3.0.1 and I did the carrier update myself and I've had MMS since Wednesday.
I followed this instruction to get MMS working on 3.0.1
http://www.xsellize.com/showthread.php?t=63999
If you're jailbroken and you've already done it you're not running IPCC 5.5
Ok, were do we get 5.5???
Yeah, if you aren't running 3.1 you won't get the update. I talked to an AT&T rep about it today. Lame.
red ! for me when sending... gotta luv how it just "works" :(
Same for me ... red exclamation mark ... "Message send failure" ...
AT&T could have accomplished this much several months ago ...
I'm getting the same red exclamation mark with a "message not sent" error. I'm running 3.0 jailbroken with ultrasn0w unlock, but was able to manually install the carrier settings update following this link's instructions: http://www.xsellize.com/showthread.php?t=63999
Yeah, no go here, can't send to other iPhone, or my sister on her Verizon phone....
says I have full reception here in LA, but no can send...
Still a red exclamation mark for me ... looks like it's trying to send ... but as the progress bar nears the end, I get the red exclamation mark.
iPhone OS 3.1 ... not jail broken ...
i was able to send a couple, but now they're all coming up with red exclamation marks in minneapolis. maybe the network just can't handle it.
Having troubles here in Minneapolis/St.Paul area also. 3GS 3.1. Sweetness.
I get the red exclamation as well when I try to send a mms, txt messages work though.
Minneapolis - 3GS on jailbroken 3.0.1. I also get red exclamation every time.
Apple - it just "works"... :(
crappy MMS. AT&T can't do MMS right? Why can other carriers get it done. I just get red exclamation points!
Update: I just tried sending a MMS 2 minutes ago and it works now :)
If you had the original iphone and have upgraded to the 3G or the 3GS then you MUST call att and have them reset the IMEI settings, usually the customer service rep will try to do that for you but cannot fully complete it until they transfer you to the technical service specialist, they will remove the settings for your original iphone(which blocked MMS) and reset it to show that you have a new MMS enabled phone. I read it in an article online and after 45 minutes with ATT they finally fixed it for me. Here is a link to the article. http://justincox.com/2009/having-trouble-sending-mms-on-the-iphone/
... was still having same problem this morning. Called AT&T Support. As I originally had a 2G, but upgraded to 3G a year ago, tried to explain what the other commenter said about the IMEI needing to be updated. After 45 minutes, got disconnected when AT&T support tried to call Apple Support for assistance. Decided to restore my phone to see if that made a difference before trying support again. Restore made no difference.
Removed my SIM card from iPhone 3G, put it into a Nokia N95. Successfully sent an MMS.
Put the SIM card back into the iPhone 3G ... MMS working.
I suspect there is some problem for people who originally had an iPhone 2G ... but the SIM swapping got me around it.
Any differences between what's been available and the "new" settings?
YES!!!
Remember to reboot the phone after you install the carrier update.
Remember to reboot your iPhone to get the MMS to finally appear after the Carrier Update.
MMS works for some... the ability to send is live, but the functioinality isn't working for all yet.
Does this kill tethering?
According to AT&T's in-account message, software v3.1 required.
Nooooooooo! Oh well, I guess I will continue to live in the dark ages and not have MMS.
Why would you need 3.1? Tethering and MMS have been available in other countries since 3.0, and all you really need the new carrier settings that you download via iTunes.
I don't get it?
AT&T network goes down in 3...2...1...
My thoughts exactly. Let's hope this doesn't make the network fail and turn all that we know into a Mad Max world. Even though that would be cool....
Doesn't the network have to be up and running before it can go down?
Rimshot!!
(coming from an iPhone user of 2+ years)
Won't happen in my market.
Does anyone know if this carrier setting will mess up my JAILBREAK?
yes, it makes the jailbroken iphone explode as soon as it gets within an inch of your head
wait... it's not working???? damn you MS....
now itunes isn't even loading
dam about time...
Apple usually does take an abnormally long amount of time to adopt to new technologies, but when they finally do, they tend to do it well. After two major revisions, I think I'm nearly ready to get an iPhone.
Way to do your research there dude...
Yeah, like that second mouse button thingy...
I'm happy for you and all Logitech MX Revolution, and I'm gonna let you finish....but the Apple Mighty Mouse was one of the greatest mice of all time.
I sent my first MMS four years ago on a $100 Sony Ericsson.I just had click on insert picture in a drop down menu and send it to a phone number. Is that difficult to understand for anyone in the world. And I live in a 3rd world country BTW
I feel sad for you.
I would hardly call MMS new Technology, and I'm still not sure what all the fuss is about ... I've been able to email pictures to anyone that had a Smartphone or a Computer since the Iphone 2g ... Cant understand why everyone is so excited about being able to Now send pictures to OLD technology NON-Smartphones thats Now progress thats a Step backward..
@Thinkpadx60 -- The excitement might be due to finally being able to send pictures to the vast majority of mobile users who do not have a smartphone or instantly to the more than likely many more who do not obsessively check their email accounts. My and your mobile usage does not necessarily reflect the behavior of the masses, that doesn't mean I want to create an elitist wall and not communicate with those on the other side.
So I downloaded and took a look at it. Looks like how the hacked ipcc files have been that let us use mms before, but if you look at the APN's they have signatures now. I wonder if this is how they will keep track of tethering once that gets entered in? hmmmm
alright its funny to laugh about how it should have happened many many years ago but if the iphone was on verizon or any other network mms may crash their network too. its easy to judge from our stand point but you gotta think there was a reason it never happened till now. i was pissed it took so long also but from what i heard the network of verizon wouldnt be able to handle it either.
Don't care. Not good enough. If AT&T charges us almost $100 per month for our iPhone accounts, more than they charge for any other phone for the same things (and in fact many other phones have other things bundled in like stuff over 3G that the iPhone isn't allowed to do etc), AND even after the phone has been out for YEARS their network isn't up to snuff its their own goddamn fault.
been had it now for over a week.
@snake
Spelling FAIL.
Also: Using memes that are no longer cool because 12 year old girls on AIM finally caught on FAIL.
EGREGIOUS FAIL.
LOL, you correct that random downrank on grammar when you can't even SPELL it right?
Upgraded to Carrier settings 5.5 via itunes update, restarted, still nothin. Talking to ATT now, the guy on the line says he just got the email about this and read it for the first time with me on the line... sigh...
