You Do NOT have to un-jailbreak you iPhone or update to 3.1 to get this to work FYI, here are the links, I'm on a 3Gs 3.0.1 and have mms now, and kept my tethering. Don't update to 3.1 on a 3GS especially if you want to jailbreak every again. 3G users can, but there are a few horror stories out there too. Anyway. You don't have to update is all I'm saying.

Android FTW
This totally jacked my iphone. Won't start at all after updating the carrier settings. I hate Apple. I have ATT. If only there was no early termination fee. No more apple products for me.
iT STOPS 3/4 WHEN SENDING MMS DAMN..
i just sent a pic of my penis to myself.. to make sure it was working.. but instead i sent it to all my contacts... good thing they haven't updated yet..
no i'm not taking into consideration that i have friend without i phones
So the MMS worked fine for me.. I just don't know if the other people received it as they haven't updated their (jailbroken) phones yet... balderdash.
does anyone know if AT&T charges extra for MMS, if you're under the unlimited texting plan?
Anyone have a solution to the red exclamation points yet?
BOOM! And there goes AT$T's network.
Sorry with all the criticism of their network I couldn't resist. Pls don't hurt me....
Red exclamation continues after 4 hours! Nothing sent successful yet. Any ideas?????????????????????????
i dont have the red exclaimation mark, but my friends aren't receiving anything on their end....
makes the sound that it sent and everything
MMS?? just another stupid fad that will fade away...
I don't even get the camera icon.
Updated carrier settings, rebooted the phone, nothing.
Talk about being late to the party.
2-10-11....eyes, fingers, toes
Nice work At&t
You can't be serious.
- User accessible file system?
- Bluetooth file sharing?
- True Exchange support?
- Flash-enabled browsing?
- Video conferencing?
- Multi-tasking?
- Tethering without jailbreaking?
- Ability to create and edit *any* Office document
- Voice-activated dialing and system commands?
iPhone is still behind in terms of features that other smartphones and OS's (particularly WinMo) have had for years!
Don't worry. The 5th iPhone will have all this xD.
I've read that AT&T has terrible service, Can anyone confirm?
*Confirmed* -
At&t could be interpreted as a 'location based service'....you have to be in just the 'right' location...to get 'any' service
Now we just need flash.
This is kinda late but after the Initial install you've got to restart the device as well as reset network configurations in settings. That solved my problems. Hope that helps anyone with the exclamation mark.
I can't believe I'm sending and recieving mms, i'd almost forgot what it is like, hopefully it's not to late and my friends and family will let me back in the mms circle, no longer will I be the forgotten, YES!!!
hey iPhone haters , why don't you download need for speed, or touch your glass screen to autofocus, or download straight from iTunes over 3G? Because you can't.
hmm what? Touching my phone screen to focus on a photo? I was too busy checking out that website my friend sent me over MSN,
without disconnecting from MSN each and every time.. after which I checked Google Latitude to see where all my friends were, via automated location updates.
Wow, ground-breaking stuff! 0.o
Here's a tutorial on how to enable MMS (AT&T) WITHOUT updating to 3.1 firmware for windows/mac users http://bit.ly/3gztaH
Jailbreakers get the IPCC 5.5 here, http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/29849/ATT_US.ipcc You know what to do.
and F**K you AT&T.
DON'T Update to 3.1 just yet.
A reboot of the phone isn't necessary--it'll appear within a few hours.
My top (sleep/wake) button is broken, so I can't reboot without running the battery completely down and letting the phone die. Yet I'm now (about 6 hours after running the update) able to MMS message.
Though honestly, what the big deal with MMS is kind of escapes me, since pretty much anyone I'd want to send pictures to has an iPhone with a real email account, and a scaled-down version of an already crappy picture doesn't appeal to me or any of them.
Now, *tethering*, on the other hand...
jailbreak, install sbsettings. install pdanet
So what are the limitations, can you send mp3s? Will now AT&T become a music sharing network via MMS?
Don't know if I'm just special, but I was on some "old or generic" text message plan. I called, they switched me to the "iphone" messaging plan, and it magically started working. Dunno how I was on some old generic plan, as I just joined 3months ago.
Its finally here. I might just stay with AT&T for just a little while longer!
U kno whats funny about all u haters, thinkin iphone ownrs r all sell out fad followers, is that there r many like me who used other networks & phones & found them much more lacking. I had sprint for 7 yrs,w/ the old Hitachi G1000, the Palm treo700wx, an HTC Touch many flip phones and even had a HP jornada pda. Even w/ all its shortcomings, the iphone still blows them all away. & I coulnd't care less if i was the only 1 on the planet w/ 1. Any1 who knows me knows i go 4 what i want & dont care what any1 else says or thinks. All i can say to u haters is.... try 1. I bought an ipod touch. i was hooked. it was way cool.
Since a lot of people seem to be complaining about the price of at&t with and iPhone/PDA I did a quick check of the four major carrier to price compare.
Sprint - $70 (450 min, UNL Any mobile, UNL Data and SMS/MMS, GPS, 7pm-7am N&W)
T-Mo - $75 (300 min, UNL M2M, Data and SMS/MMS)
at&t- $90 (450 min, UNL M2M, Data and SMS/MMS)
VZW- $100 (450 min, UNL M2M & data, 5000 SMS/MMS to non-VZW and unl SMS/MMS to VZW)
Sprint is definitely the least expensive and offers the most, but when a carrier has been bleeding subscribers as Sprint has for some time now then don't they have to offer something like this to keep people and entice others to them? Disclaimer: I do not know if Sprint is still taking net losses in subscribers as they were at the end of last year.
T-mobile has at&t beat by $15, but offers 150 less minutes. To step up to the next plan is $10 more with 600 min, but still $5 less than at&t. Arguably, the T-Mo network is not as quite as expansive as at&t and Verizon and their 3G is still offered in only a few markets compared to the other 2.
at&t $90. Blah blah, 2nd largest carrier, blah blah, "best coverage worldwide" (but do I really care if I can get reception in Mumbai since I'll probably never be going there and the coverage inside my house could use some work?), iPhone (yay?).
VZW turns out to be the most expensive of them all. I couldn't find a completely unlimited texting option on their website for the Atlanta market (other markets may have it, I don't know), and while 5000 off-network messages will likely be enough for most people why not just go ahead and offer completely unlimited like the other 3? Arguably, VZ has the best wireless network and is, at the moment, the largest.
These comparisons were to see what price would be to have a iPhone/PDA phone and get out paying the least amount each month for each of the 4 major US carriers. Each has it's advantages and disadvantages, but this post is a sub-topic to the issue being discussed here. The fact that Apple didn't include a basic functionality such as MMS in an "advanced" phone like the iPhone from the start is a bit suspect to me.
One last thing and then I'll go. No wireless network from any carrier in the US could take anywhere close to 100% subscriber load at once (I only mention this because of all the talk of overloading the at&t network and the subsequent comments of people saying it sucks because it couldn't handle it). It would crash any of the big 4 if that happened. So what say we all plan to make simultaneous calls (regardless of carrier) on Dec 20, 2012? The world is ending the next day anyway so what have we got to lose?
You know there's no question about whether or not one could find a cheaper plan with different providers. The question is the device. I had Sprint, as I mentioned in the last comment, for 7 yrs. I didn't switch because I found a cheaper plan. I switched because I'm a tech geek and I wanted a device that could do more than the one I had.
O, and I forgot to mention in the last comment, that for me the final straw with Sprint was the VERY crappy Palm pre. I got the palm pre the day it came out. Not only did it cost just as much as my 3Gs, but they (sprint) required me to go to a much more expensive unlimited data plan in order to buy it.
I had 3 lines with sprint. I upgraded all 3 the same day. I got the pre, got my wife a lotus, and the kid got a rant. For only about $30 more, I got all 3 of us iPhones. We were all VERY happy.
That stupid palm pre SUCKED!!! O it had an "APP" store. lol,... if u wanted anything besides fandango, or pandora.... well..... u were pretty much SOL.
I have 160+ apps on my 3Gs... which BTW has 32 GIGS!!!! the pre? 8! what a joke! I'm happy with me 3Gs.
Oh I know there is no question of being able to find a cheaper provider, and as such you may sacrifice network coverage or capability (e.g. In the area in which I work, Sprint reception is very poor if not non-existent. That doesn't mean Sprint sucks somewhere or everywhere else though). I was just trying to put some perspective on it since a lot of people in this thread (and in general when the iPhone topic comes up) seem to bemoan the price of the at&t iPhone/PDA plans. I do agree though, device selection can play a big role in deciding which provider to choose. I was going to mention that in my last post, but did not want to be too loquacious. Choose which device and carrier works best for you and in your location.
Yeah, there's no question the I'm paying a bit more for my Iphone than I paid for Spirnt. But, Sprints coverage here in Florida where I just moved to in January Bites. I have NO problem streaming video from youtube on my iPhone here where with sprint and my Palm Pre...I got nada!
But it's like anything else in life, If you want the best, you have to pay a bit more for it. Practically everything on the market from cars to cameras to sports equipment has varying degrees of features for different prices. Additionally, nearly every service out there that you can subscribe to has different packages each with its own price, and they usually put the one thing or two they know you'll REALLY want in the highest price package so you'll have to come off the green if you want it. It's just business.
Yet some people here seem to act Soooooooo shocked that apple or AT&T are just like everyone else! Why? They're in it to make money. They're not a public service venue. They do what they do to make money.
As an added point of interest, for those who don't know... Apple first offered the iPhone as an exclusive to Verizon! Verizon turned them down! Why? Because verizon demanded their name be printed on the outside of the device and Apple said "No way Jose". Bet they wish they had agreed now! The Iphone out sells every other phone on the market and because of it, AT&T is rolling in the dough.
If there are other phones out there that are just as good, why doesn't anyone try to market their new phone as the "Blackberry Killer" or the "Palm Killer" or the "HTC Killer"? Sprint has tried that with several phones... and failed! Simple fact is... the iPhone is just the best the market has to offer right now. Maybe something better will come out someday, and when it does, I'll consider one, but for now there isn't any.
Yet some on here act as though if you have an iPhone that you must be an apple snob. Truth is, I personally am not a fan of apple at all. They are like sony. Sure they do have superior products, but they are very proprietary. I love sony's stuf too, but don't own much of it. Likewise, The iPhone (which replaced my iPod touch) is the only apple anything I own. In fact I wish I could use windows media player instead of itunes with my iPhone. Itunes sucks!
But all things concidered, having an iPhone with it's superior abilities is worth the added BS you have to put up with.
The future is now!
I have been able to use MMS (send pictures using txt messaging) on Fido in Canada with my iPhone 3G for many, MANY, MANY months.
Now all we have to do is find someone who actually uses MMS for something else than distributing random drunkshots at 4am
MMS+iJot = faster than keyboard :-))))

If you end up not being able to send, as it gets stuck at 90%. Call att and tell them to put you iphone unlimited msging plan. apparently it is different from the unlimited plan they put you on. I had to do this to resolve my issue.
Hi! Apple
...and welcome to last week.
