Verizon: LTE rollout to be 'as close to all-at-once as possible'
Historically, wireless rollouts have been miserably long, protracted affairs that take countless years to complete, but Verizon's talking in some really aggressive terms as it moves to LTE. The company wants to be at or near 100 percent overlay with its legacy CDMA footprint by 2013, but a ton of major markets will be covered and commercially well before then -- up to 30 in 2010. Speaking in an interview this week, Verizon Wireless CTO Tony Melone has reiterated that the company is still on track with its LTE deployment -- music to our ears -- and that they're not looking to "tease" customers at length with trial deployments that would require moving cross-country to enjoy. They're looking to establish a "significant footprint" out of the gate, which is allegedly made possibly in part by the LTE equipment's ability to share some infrastructure (backhaul equipment, for instance) with the CDMA network it'll be joining in cell sites around the country. Now, how about those USB LTE modems, Verizon?

How bout doing the same damn thing for Verizon FIOS. Ive been waiting over 2 years for them to offer service in my area.
Fios would be nice... Comcast says i should get 50mbps, but in reality I'm getting about 22mbps. With fios, that would be double, and uploads would be like 5x faster...
That's because Comcast had one cable to the whole neighborhood and bandwidth is shared. But in FIOS everyone has their own cable, so its MAX speed ALL THE TIME!
Trust me, I have 25Mb FIOS thats Mega BIT, and downloads are ALWAYS at a full 3.6MB/s.
"But in FIOS everyone has their own cable" -- actually, FiOS uses a passive optical network (BPON or GPON), and so up to 64 homes share a fiber. There's plenty of bandwidth, but it's still a shared resource. Much like, say, wideband (DOCSIS 3.0) cable, which is a shared resource with plenty of bandwidth.
The difference between GPON and DOCSIS 3.0 is that under the speed levels given currently by Verizon, there is no overlap- if everyone on the node is maxing out a 50/20 connection, there is enough capacity on GPON as Verizon sets up their network (nodes of 32). However, this is not the case even with DOCSIS 3.0, which also has much larger nodes.
Now, of course, for the most part you're not going to have everyone on a connection maxing it out. But it's still worth noting...
^and that means in the future, fios could hypothetically raise speeds until there is a similar amount of overlap that cable has? So the theoretical maximums could be higher than they are currently, as the expense of not being able to obtain maximum speed if the bandwidth in the node is over utilized?
music to my ears, too! Now just hurry up and announce the LTE iPhone, already.
Verizon iPhone w/ LTE ----> bye bye, about 10 million AT&T subscribers.
Then bye-bye LTE capacity
Verizon blows. Yes, even worse than AT&T. Higher prices, crappy data service.
Yes, enjoy your iPhone on Verizon...in 2013.
>> "Verizon blows. Higher prices, crappy data service."
So wait... AT&T 3G is better than Verizon EVDO ???
/bizarro world
yes.
And imagine an LTE iPhone with an embedded SIM, no WiFi, gimped bluetooth and a Verizon partnered App Store with the big red "V" getting a cut of the App store chedda. Yea, good luck with that...
If they offered an iPhone in New York or San Francisco where AT&T's service basically blows, they'd get a lot of takers, even if they hobble the freaking thing as per usual and of course charge more. At least the phone part would work.
Soon you'll be able to check outlook 10 times faster (Because you know, thats all Verizon's phones are good for)
i've been with verizon for over 10yrs. just picked up the iphone for myself.rest of the family is verizon. will switch back to verizon when they pick up the iphone.
Thank you for your story, it benefited all of us.
i laughed at my roomate because he wanted to ditch verizon for the iphone ... even though his whole family was on the same plan.
but hey, if you feel so insecure about yourself you have to start an entirely new plan and end up paying more (but you dont pay for it, naturally) just for an apple phone ..... bummer.

thats because i had the i touch and found myself carrying around 2 devices(itouch and piece of sh#t verizon phones, which for years i would keep selling them on ebay to trade up trying to find something a little close to the iphone). why would i feel insecure just because i want to treat myself, can't help that a lot of poorly educated stiffs can't afford 2 services.
It actually goes : Cool story bro.
So buying an iPhone means you are insecure? wow i thought people bought them cuz they liked them... my mistake

So buying an iPhone means you are insecure?
?????????????? oooook?
i like how people on these threads always like to start arguments, gives them a chubby i guess.
just saying i like my gadgets and if you can't afford 2 services u shouldn't bitch.
"i would keep selling them on ebay to trade up trying to find something a little close to the iphone"
If you have a Koreatown near you, go there. Find a phone shop. Go nuts. It's not that hard to find non-crappy phones on Verizon; it just won't be Verizon that's selling them.
USB LTE modems? Ha! What about the LTE MiFi?
I have Comcast service at home which is good at times, but annoying and unreliable at other times. LTE would theoretically rival the cable speed I get round these parts and surpass the available DSL speeds!
I wonder if they will ever market their wireless network for home users (in places where they don't have Fios, of course).
Well that's a very aggressive move, but great for us
There's a bit of contradiction going on here.
25-30 markets by the end of 2010? That's not anything different than what was said earlier this year.
And how is a 3 year deployment not a market-by-market deployment? Okay, sure they moved up a nationwide deployment by 2 years, but a 3 year deployment strategy is still market by market.
LTE >>>>>> 3G, not only as far as speed is concerned, but also as far as capacity is concerned.
And it won't be 2013. Probably 2011.
YES now i can get on Verizon's awesome Vcast services and pay $2.99 to download one of their wallpapers to my phone in HALF THE TIME!!!
OR:
-Snap a picture and make it your wallpaper
-load an image from your computer and use THAT as a wallpaper
-get an image from a friend and use that as a wallpaper
Advanced Mode:
-Email it to your phone's MMS -or- open it with mobile email (once the update goes through)
And guess what? They are all FREE (well, some of them assume data/text)
These anti-verizon posts would be entertaining if people would.. I dunno.. actually try and use a verizon phone, or at least read up on them.
I have a question.
If Verizon deploys LTE along with their legacy CDMA network, does that mean that they will also roll out a legacy GSM network in order to gradually shift to CDMA? Or does that mean every phone that you use with a Verizon SIM will have to be CDMA/LTE compatible rather than GSM/LTE compatible?
Gradually shift to GSM, my bad.
It will be LTE/CDMA handsets. Qualcomm has already worked out soft hand-offs between LTE and CDMA.

How does Verizon cost more? I can understand Sprint or T-mobile customers bragging about their costs, but AT&T customers have no room in this argument. The big two, Verizon and AT&T, will always cost near or the exact same for service. Also, Verizon is allowing Wi-Fi on all capable phones currently because there is no reason to block it. Since all advanced devices require a data package, why would they block Wi-Fi? So many friggin' ill-educated knuckledraggers on here.\
Quit being mindless fanboys and use valid arguments:
AT&T has generally has a better variety of phones and Verizon has better service/coverage (domestically...which is really what matters to most customers). This is a generalization of course, but it is really the only way to distinguish between the two.
I'd just be happy to get EVDO service in my area (still sitting here at plain jane 1X).
Does anyone else feel like the Verizon LTE deployment is going to be plagued with problems, or is it just me?
Well my Question is, IF Verizon is moving to LTE( which i think its more GSM related meaning phones will need a SIM card) and they are releasing all this new CDMA(evdo) phones, and planing on adding the Palm pre(CDMA) to their network.. DOes this mean all these phones now working with Verizon , will Still work with Verizon once they had rolled out their LTE network( 30% by 2010 and planned 99% by 2013 ?
First off, Verizon FIOS from what I had understood. Individually one customer can get up-to 622mbps. This was told to me by a dude who helped in designing the Network[Thats what he told me, he was a consultant for them]. But, it sounded to me like an over exaggeration.
Now to the real talks. LTE would be awesomeness redefined. I would change from AT&T to verizon in a heart beat. I love their service and all its flawless. But, I like the independence of changing phones when I want without dialing 611, thus I am with AT&T for now. On the other hand I also have a thing for Nokia Phones. I won't have the same choice that I have on GPRS, if I were on CDMA.
Now as far as Verizon forcing MFGs to add their sh!t on the firmware/OS, I would have to agree with that only on the low end phones, but who doesn't do that? WiFi its not like verizon doesn't want their customers to have WiFi their winmo phones have wifi such as HTC phones, but RIM for some reason make any devices that have CDMA and WiFi this was pointed about by BGR or Engadget not sure.
And that does sound about right. Since, no other CDMA carrier has blackberries with WiFi up-to my knowledge, could be wrong.
But, I am anxious about LTE and I could careless if I get to use the iPhone or not. I am using it right now, but as advanced the phone is I just got MMS on it today now that is a lil bit ole.
I just hope they have a plan that can actually make the USB modems usable. If they cap these plans at 5GB then the plan is useless.
I use my Sprint broadband card for all my internet usage doing work thinks and some personal stuff, and I'm using around 20GB a month. I'm really glad I have a truly unlimited plan.
But when you renew your contract you probably have to switch to their 5GB monthly cap. I'm sitting on unlimited right now, but I'm dreading the day I have to renew my contract.
