HTC Leo benchmarked, leaves blisters
The HTC Leo has already got hearts-aflutter the world over with its high-end spec sheet and huge capacitive touchscreen, but now that some early benchmarks have hit we might have a full-on fanboy panic on our hands. That 1GHz Snapdragon processor isn't just for show, people -- you're looking at least a 300 percent improvement over the Touch HD on every single 3D graphics benchmark with an astounding 1,822 percent improvement on one test, and raw CPU performance was nearly three times as fast. Yeah, those are some wild numbers -- we'll have to see what battery life is like when this thing ships, but for now we'd recommend hitting the read link and taking in the full set of benchmarks.

This mobile screen looks AWESOME!!!!
Best screen i have ever seen in any mobile, i wish the next iphone to get a similar screen instead of the current one
you win sir. Do any of you think Web Os would look great on this phone? I love android but Web Os is awesome.
House... there will no longer be an iphone after the release of this.
Is that singed hair I see on the hand in the picture?
I wonder if Microsoft will eliminate the 65k colour limitation for 6.5.1. It would be awful to experience such a nice screen with massive amounts of colour banding. At least thing is pretty much ready for 7.
Now let's hope it's got a bigger battery then that paltry 1000mah battery on the Toshiba TG01
Dr. House:
More, or Less pathetic than coming back to check how your ranking is doing? And then having a cry that it's not doing well?
I really think you're taking being downranked too personally. It's the internet, people like the color red, and to click stuff.
I'm sure people would like you in non-internet life--real-life, I think the internetted call it. You get points in my book for calling yourself DR House. (BTW, season premiere was bitchin'.)
without android it is still lacking....
@Ruben
I agree with you, but funny how no one seems to complain about Apple's use of only 65K colors in all their iPods/iPhones
"You almost had ME!?? You never even had your PHONE!"
Hardware is as good as software. WinDULL Mobile means PhoneDULL experience. :)
ATT or even TMO need to pick this up.
How's the battery life on these devices? Do those 1GHz processors have decent power-saving characteristics? These cellphones get faster and faster, but I don't think battery technology is able to keep up.
They got left behind 10 years ago.
cortex a8 has almost identical idle power usage compared to ARM11 devices. They draw a little more power under load but complete their tasks faster so they spend more time at idle. Battery life should be roughly equal give or take depending on usage patterns.
Yes, it can do more than the iPhone in 3D applications... now move on and troll elsewhere.
It might be better but there are no good games for WinMo!
The only one i found was Quake and i think XDA had a Starcraft port.
It can be 6 million times faster but if youve got nothing to use all that power???
You can open an excel spreadsheet like 2x faster now!!
Several 3D games for WinMo:
Virtual Pool 3D
Quake
Quake 2
Call of Duty 1 and 2
Dooms 1 and 2
Retro Detonation
Rage of Mages II
Pocket Mini Golf 2
Undercroft
Tank Ace 1944
Drum Kit Ace
Enslave
Pocket Wolf 3D
3D Constructo Combat
Descent
Crazy Ball 3D
Super Troope
3D House of Death
etc
etc
etc
You guys should really troll elsewhere.
Several 3D racing games and puzzles
I'm not trolling, just stating what I saw when I has winmo phones. They only game I really enjoyed was age o empires. There was a total lack and it didn't helphtc "forgot" to include 3d drivers for my device. The app store makes it slot easier to find games. There were places like handango but I still couldn't find anything great.
Lol total iPhone spelling failure on my part. Damn capacitive screen! Lol
All of you bitching about games: It's a damn phone. Use it as one.
wo0vie
The great thing about WinMo is not only can I use it as a phone, but I can also play a game in the BACKGROUND while on the phone, or in the middle of a video conference, or while editing a word document and then emailing it out as an attachment, and then switching back over to the phone "window" to collaborate with my colleague after having received my email.
iPhone what?
@ WindowsFTW
you realize that most of the things you mentioned can be done on the iphone too ...
you can get a call, and at the same time use navigation like TomTom or email or consult contacts or calendaring ...
all core Apple Apps run in the background ...
even play your favorite game and listen to the iPod function ...
So most of what you mention just works,
there are things that do not work like for example listening to pandora and use other apps ...
WindowsFTW, so you expect people to belive you're sitting there waiting on an email to come in, with your colleague on hold, getting in a game of Minesweeper?
Someonehow I doubt that, and you don't actually use your phone for business anyway. You sound like some kid who needs to justify your failed purchase
Dang. Assuming luke is right about power draw, this is serious business.
Engadget shouldn't gray out the rating box. It makes it hard to rate the bastards down further. MWAHAHAHA!!!
First to be down ranked!
I'm in love. With the capacitive touchscreen, this would be the perfect device to get a build of Android working on as well.
+1 for Android on this device.
I believe the Leo reaches a milestone - it will do everything you can throw at it without noticeable lag. Hardware-wise I think what remains to be tackled on mobile phones are cameras and then projectors. Both offer significant physical challenges - size and power respectively. Oh and of course batteries are a lagging element.
BTW I mean decent-quality cameras and projectors.
Also, this thing better be 300% improved at getting here to the states too!
yuk yuk yuk
wow that phones nice. makes my lg rumor look like crap. not that it didnt do a good job of that on its own.
you have a first gen Rumor as well? I can feel your pain. At least mine hasn't been as bad as my sister's. I"m looking forward to December when my 2-year phone rebate is available. Sprint is getting some sweet phones this year.
Makes EVERYTHING look like crap.
This is as good as it gets, and they better port this damned thing to the US like FAST!
This just went up 300% in my desirability rankings.
Like, from 10% to 30%?
Sounds like your as fast as this phone.
AT@T.......... MAKE WITH THIS PHONE ALREADY!!!!!!!!
Totally gonna skip the TP2....
Have been considering replacing my 3GS with the LEO. Not sure if its a good idea or should I wait for the 4"+ phones to mature a bit
Or wait to see if it's coming to the US at all...
Do you always replace phones every three months?
Wow....I'd never pay 600 Euros for a phone. But...If I ever did pay 600 Euros for a phone, I'd spend it on this one.
That thing is...beautiful.
You can always get Acer variant - 3.8" and $500. Same Snapdragon, but UI is simple.
Just got my HTC Touch Pro 2 and am quite happy with the speed. But if this phone runs 3 times faster, I wouldn't complaint :) HD2 is definitely a worthy upgrade to HD.
hey engadget - thx for posting this article (even if it was posted at 10:14 EST on a Sunday evening when most humans are sleeping) - I so desperately want this to be available in the US soon.
"Gimme gimme gimme. I need, I need, I need."
Really? "...most humans are sleeping"? At 10:14 pm Eastern Time? Actually, you said 10:14 EST when most (if not all) of the Eastern Time Zone in the US is in EDT. It's 7:14 pm in California, never mind the other three fourths of the US, never mind the other half of the world that's in sunlight. Should we all go to bed at little Ineed911's bedtime?
BTW, nice quote from What About Bob?
That's what she said.
