RED releases high-res images of accessories, no actual accessories
When RED's Scarlet and EPIC camera bodies finally became official late last year (after seemingly endless teasing) they were pictured with an almost farcical array of accessories. Nearly a year on and neither of the bodies nor any of those add-ons are available, but you can at least now get a higher-res look at all that wallet-tapping accoutrement. Pictured are the REDVOLT battery pack and its hot-swappable cells, the wireless REDMOTE controller, the BOMB EVF, a display screen, and even a rifle-like stock called the RED GUNNER. Some of these we've already seen in the flesh, others haven't been rendered with this much detail before, and sifting through the REDUSER.net forum where they were posted uncovers some other morsels to whet the appetites of photographers who like extreme stylistic touches. The juiciest is a mention that the release dates for EPIC and Scarlet will be announced in October -- which doesn't leave much time for a 2009 debut for the cameras themselves.

Can't wait for the Scarlet to come out! Canon is one step closer to getting my money with their 7D...hopefully RED's October annoucement will have a near-term release schedule! :D
Love the smell of vapor[ware] in the morning!

These appear to all be 3D Renderings of equipment to me. A year after release and they are still not available and only have 3D renderings to show them? Original story one the "became official" link was all 3D renderings as well. Does anyone know of this equipment actually being built and in use? Sounds like vapor-ware to me, although I am not in their target market and this stuff might actually exist.
Everything RED puts out shoots at least 4k, way ahead of anyone else. The images on their site tend to be these rendered looking ones.
Here's some photos from IBC 09:

It's not vaporware since they've already released the 4K RED camera. It's more like they're following the Apple model, except instead of just tablet rumors, they're actually releasing information, haha.
There are major motion pictures that have been shot on RED cameras already..
'Knowing' and 'District 9' being the most memorable for me.
It's not vaporware, they just tease endlessly until the product is ready.
Yeah, but they advertised the RED One for a full two years before they shipped any, and they missed their release date by over a year, so... while vaporware isn't the right term, I don't expect anything except the base 2/3" Scarlet fixed lens until pretty late in 2010.
Some hands-on stills of the EPIC from IBC:

It looks pretty much like the renders, so I don't see a big deal. Clear product images ftw!
This is not 3D renders http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic
Ugly?
Care?
Now with GUN! total WAR, KRIEG'SmarINE, hard-CORE t.o.rTURE and 2nd Gen-OCIDE all yours for a the equivalent to landmine effect to bodily limbs.
I own a RED. Got mine with my companies tax break that George Bush gave companies on buying equipment. Tax break was up to 50K.
Wow, I never knew how expensive this stuff was... who buys this stuff? (seriously)
Wow, I never knew how expensive this stuff was... who buys this stuff? (seriously)
People who make feature films. Compared to renting a camera + equipment for several thousands a day this is rather affordable. Also when you have a budget of several millions I suppose a few thousand for the equipment isn't that much of a problem.
Sony makes 4K cameras that can cost $250,000.
You can outfit a 4K RED camera for about $40,000.
It's all relative.
It will be at least another year before they release anything (don't believe anything they say, they have yet to keep any actual release dates), then it will only be the basics, and then it will take another 12 months before it works properly...
RED SHMED, nice in theory, don't hold your breath...
Hense the disclaimer on their website and messages "Specifications, prices and delivery dates are subject to change. Count on it."
Everyone said don't hold your breath on the Red One...
Quite frankly, Red has delivered on their promises up to this point in delivering an amazing camera despite everyone calling it vapourware way back. While they may take awhile to release products, they are small dedicated team who are producing cameras that most other companies have been holding out on us or not developing in order to release incrimental upgrades and get us to constantly purchase new cameras.
RED is a welcomed and necessary addition to the industry. They have delivered thus far and I think everyone should believe the information that comes from them as they deserved it thus far. Go on the message boards...you will not find a company whose president and top people actively respond to messages on a daily basis as much as Red.
I've been on the msg boards and have experienced first hand how rude and obnoxious Jim and his co-horts can be. If your not the blind following the blind fanboy you are treated with contempt and disrespect...
All I am saying is don't wait for this product because it is far far away in a distant galaxy. The pressure in value large sensor cameras is now back on RED from standard DSLRs Not everyone wants REDCODE etc, just creative flexibility which is what DSLRs are staring to offer in the real world at lower prices than RED could dream of offering...
No one even mentioned the most ridiculous thing about the upcoming series of cameras...

@sintricate - Motion Picture studios and indy filmmakers with too much money hahaha
@Guy - yeah ok. 'cept they're pretty much the best digital movie-making solution out there, and as expensive as they are, they're still pennies on the dollar what "competing" (if there even is such a thing, highest resolution non-RED cinema camera I know of is 1080p still, but I could be grossly ignorant) models cost (I had read the Sony cameras Lucas used, for instance, are in the quarter million dollar range before optics)
There is also the Dalsa Origin II, which also does 4K, but with a CCD sensor (so no rolling shutter effect I suppose). Apparently it isn't available anymore, and you could only rent one (and after a few days would have been able to afford the Red One...). The Panavision Genesis has a higher resolution CCD than the Red One, but it can't output it (!?), so all you get is 1080p. So there are competitors, it's just that they are very, very expensive.
I'm a broadcast cameraman and, although I've never used a Red, they look like the most uncomfortable and impractical things to operate.
We used RED 4k for our short film this year, and the cam is really suited for tripod work. On first day of shooting HDD connection kept fucking up and a tech had to be called in to fix it - other days it was fine. I've also heard of another RED being used for a music video, and data cable kept getting reset with a slightest touch. It might not be the best field camera imo.
Hey Engadget, that's a funny headline but not strictly true as there were demo units of the camera and some of the accessories at IBC...but why let the truth get in the way of a sub-Onion headline ;-)
Mmmmm.... RED tasty.
Been watching RED for some time now. The RED one is about the only thing you can actually buy. (and that was being advertised for almost 2 years before release) Most people I know need to invest for non-RED lenses and adapters cause RED's are so crappy. Just saw "The Informant'' since Soderbergh has been one of the first to actually use the camera. I thought I needed new classes. The image was soft and muddy and looked like a really bad DI. Maybe it was the theater but man I hope movies don't start looking as bad as this one. Otherwise a good flick!
What you saw was what Soderbergh wanted you to see, you'll notice that not everything on this list looks like The Informant:

BOMB EVF, RED GUNNER. Come on red, some people are going to have to fly on planes with this gear.
Gawd, that is so hideously ugly. It looks like a bunch of 12-year-olds designed The Most Awesomest Camera Ever.
I don't demand a lot from my cameras in the aesthetics departments, but as a general rule they should not strike you blind on looking at them.
"The RED one is about the only thing you can actually buy."
I think the poster meant try buying a Genesis or an F23. Panavision doesn't sell cameras, they rent them. Most cinema level prime lenses cost more than the Red One body.
You can make Red footage look any way you want to; be sure to watch "Trauma" on NBC tonight, which is an all Red TV show.
Bottom line, to my knowledge there are no cameras planned or in existence at this time that will touch what Red has done or is preparing to do. Me, I'll be a first day buyer, when they actually announce what day that is of course.
I suppose red, scarlet, and epic keep in the spirit of Jannard's previous endeavor: http://images.google.com/images?q=oakley%20headquarters&sourceid=mozilla2&oe=utf-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi
RED = cameras & accessories as designed by Darth Vader (with the same unyielding performance [until Lucas made into a whiney wuss in Ep. 1-3]).
Looks totally incompatible with anything else, so absolutely everything to do with these cameras will have to be bought from RED.
Fair enough, that is their business model.
I hope these things are going to be more reliable than the Red One.
Hopefully the image quality will be way better than the Red One as well.
Assuming they actually get these cameras out one day.
Anything Red makes works with all the standard Arriflex accessories...dovetails/baseplates, 15mm/19mm rod standards, PL mount, etc etc.
Having shot all my jobs with the Red One for two years now, and having owned one for one year, it's reliable enough. You have a problem here or there, but nothing crazy. Yes there are anecdotes on the net, but my experience and the experience of my professional peers is that it works 99% of the time, and they're closing in on 99.99%
Your image quality remark doesn't make sense, until you get comparing it to the F23, the F35/Genesis, all $100K+ cams.
I can't defend the system without sounding like a fanboy, but holy crap there are a TON of people talking out of their ass here. It's like a Radio Shack employee convention.
And as to your comment about "assuming they get these out one day"...I completely agree. They're perpetually late/teasing things before they're ready, and it gets old. But they do eventually get what they say out.
One fact that some seem to me missing is that its a completely modular camera system, which is revolutionary to the industry. From now on you won't have to buy a new camera just a new sensor or brain, this blows the business model of the existing camera companies out of the water. The Scarlet will outperform the Red One for a fifth of the price and a fraction of the size as well as being able to shoot both Still and Motion with a 150 FPS burst rate at 3k. For $3750 you will have the ability to make a film with unrivaled image quality and mobility as you can run all functions of the camera via a wireless remote which makes for endless mounting possibilities. This new system isn't a game changer it actually reinvents the game entirely.
To be able to shoot with available light in a digital format allows for virtually anyone to make a stunningly visual film. It eliminates any and all excuses.
