Are
older Zune models going the way of the brick? We've received a handful of tips pointing us to the official Zune forums, where reports are coming in that apparently a number of the non-Zune HD units haven't been able to sync with Zune 4.0 software. Although a few people have elaborated on some steps to take (hint: it involves a lot of downgrading and reinstallation of both firmware and Zune software), there doesn't seem to be a clear consensus on its effectiveness. Honestly, it's hard to tell from our end if this is really a widespread issue and we haven't seen it ourselves, so we're putting it to you, deer reader: has your Zune device forgotten how to sync with the mothership?

I have an original brown zune and would not sync after updating the Zune Marketplace software. I disconnected it and reconnected it (trying every usb port on my computer) several times to no avail. I turned my hardware off and on, rebooted my computer, closed the application and restarted, still my computer would simply not recognizing that it was connected. As I began to troubleshoot the problem searching through Microsoft's online support documentation, the standard winXP bubble appeared above the notification area in the lower right of the screen stating "Your new hardware has been installed and is ready to use." I reoped my software and sure enough it was now recognized and I could sync again.
The problem is that with all the other zune updates, after updating the software you would go back into the application and then say update my firmware. This time after updating the software, Windows automatically detects your device and updates your drivers (if you have an older device) but you never get any indication that is happening. If a little winXP bubble would have initially said, "Installing new device" then I would have patiently waited, but since I kept rebooting/unplugging my device the driver download/install was taking a long time to complete.
If anyone else has this problem after installing the new Zune marketplace software, plug in your Zune and leave it for a long time. My took about 10 minutes before it finished downloading/installing my new drivers - and that was on my speedy network.
My Zune80 has exhibited strange sync behavior since the 4.x upgrade
That fateful Tuesday, I very much expressed my disdain for M$ deciding it was for the better of the Zune brand to abandon all we loyal gen1,gen2,gen2.5 owners with no noticeable updates or improvements, coupled with flakey software behavior and overall decline in operation, not improvement. NOT a good way to win the PMP war and maintain customer loyalty.
Just look on the Zune forums for Zune team member 'skipdeez' comment about the 'older' (12-18months is obsolete now?)... 'but you had a good run with them, didn't ya!'
There's lots of unhappy people out there, me being one of them.
I'm glad karma is doing its job.

Those f you with 30s call Zune and tell them your problem. They will offer you an upgrade.
no, my Zune 30 syncs fine with Zune 4.0. the only problem I have with it is that I cant sign in anymore, living in Australia, "this functionality is not available in your region"...
First sync after upgrading to 4.0 with my Zune 80 was a bit slow and painful. Been fine since then though.
hahah pathetic.
An article about Zune failures leads to a slew of Apple/iPhone sucks comments... AMAZING.
my zune wont sync after i got the zune pass, i love zune but im a little miffed, going to get the hd but i still need my 120 for long trips, and xbox playlist !
16Gb worked fine for a couple days, but now when I try to sync it the Zune software stops working and I'm forced to restart. But haven't had any freezing of the device, so the music I have on it still works.
Tons of people's Zunes were ruined by the update from what I've read. I have seen numerous posts on the official Zune forum asking for help and getting no responses. Many of them said they are filing complaints through the Better Business Bureau because Microsoft - as usual - won't do anything about it when called or emailed about the problems.
I have a 30 GB and I will not upgrade.
