Are
older Zune models going the way of the brick? We've received a handful of tips pointing us to the official Zune forums, where reports are coming in that apparently a number of the non-Zune HD units haven't been able to sync with Zune 4.0 software. Although a few people have elaborated on some steps to take (hint: it involves a lot of downgrading and reinstallation of both firmware and Zune software), there doesn't seem to be a clear consensus on its effectiveness. Honestly, it's hard to tell from our end if this is really a widespread issue and we haven't seen it ourselves, so we're putting it to you, deer reader: has your Zune device forgotten how to sync with the mothership?

I've had a Zune16 and just got my Zune HD last week and I have zero problems.
Syncing has always worked fine,
maybe once or twice did it freeze mid sync and a reset was in order.
But other then that everything is running well

@ Quantumphysics
Did we ask you?
Anyways, I've had no problems. Been able to sync up my 30,8, and HD perfectly
@quantumphysics
Completely Agree! The Fact that you have to push a button to change the volume is so ridiculous!! C'Mon Microsoft
/sarcasm
So who's this problem going to affect? A few dozen people that own Zunes? Microsoft is trying to tell older model Zune users to cough up the loot and buy a Zune HD.
No problems with my Launch day Zune 30 Brown. It had the latest firmware when I patched it with 4.0 though.
I was reading on the forums where some devices were having trouble upgrading the firmware to 3.2, on install attempt it would just hang up on 3 of 4....some people seemed to thing it was the larger Zunes(80-120GB) and a few of the smaller Flash based ones.....my 30GB is fine tho
My 4 GB got bricked at stage 3 when the process just stopped.
MS said they would repair/replace it, but I had to fight a bit to get them to do it since the warranty had expired. I have another 4 GB and it upgraded fine.
the software failed to even install over my old zune software, now i have none:(.
When I tried to sync my new Zune HD it overheated and caught on fire. Darn M$!
pics or it didnt happen...
are you serious?

You must be thinking of an iPhone.

Point, Proof, Period.
this is so funny cuz it's false.
everything works for me. my 120 and HD are both happy campers. nice scare attempt with the opening sentence tho.
My 120 stoped being reconised by the software but a reset(hold left and up for a while) of the Zune fixed everything up.
While syncing up today, it failed twice. But then after that it synced up just fine.
I do want to know who's having trouble. Maybe we can help (ya know instead of start another flame war, lol) =).
Positive outlook.......
Maybe these people are trying to sync an old zune on OSX....... Since the person who crapped out the ipod wont allow crossover at all.
I kind of ruined your positive comment..... Im sorry.....
I have run into major issues once I updated both my 80 and 8.
Both Zune's were able to sync wirelessly once docked previously to a PC that was always on.
Now, both Zunes first of all don't even seem to attempt to auto-sync when docked, and as well, never connect to the PC anymore. That, and connecting directly via USB to the PC only occasionally works, and a majority of the time requires me to restart the Zune software on the PC. This is quite a pain, since before, I would just dock my Zune/Zunes and they would just sync themselves, without having to touch the PC, which is hidden away and I access via remote desktop.
There are definite issues with the new software/firmware since there are at least some users who ran into issues, and that includes me.
I might try to start from scratch on that PC (which I was planning on doing to switch out the MB on that PC to an Atom board for power savings), but as far as I'm concerned, the new software has introduced some issues.
@N900
My red Zune 80 has stopped syncing, or is it synchronizing? Well, it hasn't synced since around the first week of this month. I've tried restarting it but to no avail. I tried wireless syncing for squat. I've tried one other usb port and that didn't work. I searched if there were any software updates, there were none. I read somewhere that you have to uninstall, then reinstall the software. But doesn't that delete all the songs in your collection? Forget that. I don't even wanna know how long that is going to take. But I might consider it if there is really no other way. Is anyone else having/had this problem? Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!
no my zune 16gb is just fine, just it's annoying when it decides to load my pictures which I dont like it to do.
i had this problem after 1-2 days. i dont know if it was to do with the Zune s/w itself or operating system but the resolution was to change the permissions on all user documents folder and take ownership on all the files and folders. i was not even able to write files to desktop.
i had similar problem with itunes s/w before. when ever i opened itunes, it just crashed while trying to fetch the music folders. this was almost 2 months before the release of zune s/w 4.0
My 120 is doing just fine good sirs!
All my zunes( 30, 80, 16, and 32hd) are still working great and even my friends 120gb is working so no problems here :) gotta get myself a new zune hd though, girlfriend took mine :( lol
Actually, some Zune's are bricking completely.
They won't even turn on.
My Zune 30 has frozen and crashed couple of times since the latest firmware update, I don't know, but something's fishy about the new firmware.
After I installed the Zune 4 software, I found that a new device driver was installed on my Zune the first time I tried to sync it, and it turned out that the driver required a system reboot after installing. Once I did that and connected it again, I was prompted to install the new (optional) firmware uprdate.) I went ahead and did that, and after doing so, everything syncs just fine for me.
There are several forums on how to reinstall the driver to get syncing back working with the new Zune 4.0 software.
Oops, I should clarify one thing: the new device driver was installed on the PC, not on the Zune itself.
mine is fine
Funny poll options, ftw!
I had this problem the day the new software came out, the solution for me was to make zune software 4.0 'forget' my zune 120, then re-register it. Tried just about every possible other solution out there first, but that's all it ended up taking for me. My device firmware was already at 3.2, so perhaps an update might be needed for those with older versions, but who knows. Certainly an inconvenience though
My Zune30, using Windows7, hasn't had any issues that I could see.
nothing but zune goodness here.
Have an old 30GB zune got all the way back when they first launched, still works great, and no issues with the latest firmware/software.
Zune 4GB, Windows XP with latest updates.
Zero problems.
if I even need to do a mass survey for school, ill let engadget know
I've got a 120, a 16 and an HD and haven't had any sync issues.
Zune 80 under Vista and zero issues. Firmware update went without a hitch and the Zune 4.0 software sycs perfectly with it. In fact I've been syncing more often than I used to since the smartdj makes it easier to find new music. This is using wireless syncing, I rarely attach the Zune to my PC.
i don't normally comment, but i had to. My zune (an orginal 30gb first gen). Willy sync fine but it does get errors. The music transfers over but on the zune software it gives me errors saying it's not transferring and saying my zune if full when it's not. I think this zune has just about had it though. Still does everything fine but the headphone jack is messed up and i have to hold the headphone jack in the port to keep sound going through. Other wise it comes out monosound and very distant sounding. I want to upgrade to a ZuneHD but I'd rather have a bigger storage space.
The Zune HD does come in 32GB, which is (obviously) 2 GB more than your current 30GB one...
don't think any issues other then this one:
Zune software on Win7 box has issues connecting to the marketplace (loging in)
Software and firmware installed fine but whenever I sync music to my Zune 80 on the 4.0 software it refuses to include the album art on the device (despite it showing up just as fine as always on the computer software).
Its Weird, My Zune Will Sync Manually, But Wirelessly, It Says Are You Signed In. Whats Wrong???
It's probably caused by unrequired capital letters.
What if the upgrade failed...
So I un-installed the Zune 3 software... And the Zune 4 software STILL refuses to install...
And when I try to re-install the Zune 3 software... IT FAILS WITH THE SAME ^%$^%&* ERROR!!!
The installer is complaining about a "Zune network service" that is required... So how can a service be needed in order to install the software that is susposed to contain the services!
ARGH!!!!!!
I told my uncle with his Zune 30 to NOT upgrade.
Install requires windows firewall service to be running.
