QNAP ships NMP-1000 Network Multimedia Player
It sure took 'em long enough, but QNAP has finally come around and delivered its NMP-1000 Network Multimedia Player here in the States. If you'll recall, we actually toyed around with one way back at CeBIT, and while those camped out in Osaka have been enjoying the spoils for months now, the Yanks in attendance have been forced to wait. According to QNAP, the DLNA-compliant media streamer is now shipping in America, though a quick look around our favorite web stores has turned up nothing. We're sure that'll be remedied in short order, though.

BOY AM I TIRED! Time for me to take a QNap.
However it's pronounced...
:D
Oh QNAP.
They stole my initials. I'm suing them.
"Mommy can you turn QNAP on? I'm scared!"
"Jimmy just cause QNAP glows on the bottom and plays sleepy time tunes doesn't mean the monsters aren't going to eat for dinner tonight"
"But mommy!"
you*
Does it actually display anything other than "VIDEO" on the display?
(Drumming fingers, waiting for battlegadget with PopcornHour C-200.)
Excellent codec support. Anyone can find a solid price for this anywhere? A QNAP forum post listed $399 but that was an estimate made back in March '09. I wonder if that indeed is the price. Might not be what I'm prepared to pay.
I googled it, found a site listing multiple other sites with stock for around $515
That's kinda pricey, when you can get an Acer AspireRevo for less, and get more for the buck.
Gotta agree with gerrg, and if you don't want Windows as your media PC, you can go with the ASRock ION 330, so you sacrifice a pre-installed OS for a drive bay.

QNAP has made some interesting (and very solid) NAS solutions, but even in that category, I've found similar systems (faster CPU, more memory) for cheaper, and that includes a Windows Home Server license.
to little to late
apart from the fast network port it offers nothing over models released years ago.
This was actually released back in march to a few people who laughed at it and told qnap where to go.
it been on sale for a while around asia but please avoid it !
I love my Qnap 509 NAS so this was high on my list a while back.
But then I bought a Xtreamer, switched the fan and I am good to go until either the PCH or maybe the WDTV v2.
I'm liking Xtreamer.I have several questions for you tho
(1). How long before you received yours (assuming u reside in the US of A)?
(2). Is the UI customizable? via plugins of some sort?
(3). How is the UI compared to WD TV2 or Popcorn Hour?
(4). How would you rate this Xtreamer in relations to other competitive products in the market i.e. Popcorn Hour, WD TV2, etc?
Thanks.
The NMP-1000 ships for the equivalent to USD429 already. It is available from Swedish retailers:

(prices in Swedish crowns, SEK)
The hell... I was all ready to buy this until I saw that it uses the SMP8635. Why release a player with that old chip when the competition is moving to the much more capable 864x?

WDTV2, xtreamer, popcorn hour c-200, mvix ultio, vudu, seagate something or other, now qnap ... too many half-assed boxes
Oh hay! Ive seen one of these before! Its called a PC.
It is awesome, stylish GUI & nice features.

Sound nice, but if you have a Tivo, why bother with another box. You can copy your videos from you computer to a Tivo or Stream with software and its works pretty nice.
Why would get this over a PS3?
