The World's First 12-megapixel Camera Phone with an Optical Zoom Is Launched in Korea
Following the launch of Pixon12, the first 12 megapixel camera phone in June, Samsung astonishes the world with the 12 megapixel camera phone featuring Optical Zoom.
Seoul, Korea, September 29th, 2009 – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced the launch of the 'Samsung AMOLED 12M' (Model Name: SCH-W880), the world's first 12-megapixel camera phone with an optical zoom up to 3 times. The phone is going to be sold in Korean market from early October.
The 'Samsung AMOLED 12M' is incorporated with the latest camera technology and display technology – the world's first 12-megapixel camera with an optical zoom and the world's most advanced WVGA (800 x 480) AMOLED full touch screen.
As a response to one of the most demanding mobile consumers in Korea, the 'Samsung AMOLED 12M' comes packed with a host of functions which enable consumers to easily capture, browse and share their images on the move – all on a brilliant full-touch 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED screen.
"Samsung has led the camera phone market introducing the very many first of its kind camera phone – the first 5-megapixel (SCH-V7800, June 2005), the first 7-megapixel with an optical zoom(SCH-V770, July 2005), the first 10-megapxel (SCH-B600, October 2006), and recently, the first 12-megapixel camera phone for global market(Samsung Pixon12, June 2009). The Samsung AMOLED 12M is a living proof of our continuous commitment to introduce the most up-to-date technology to enrich users' mobile experience." said Executive Vice President JK Shin, Head of Mobile Communication Division in Samsung Electronics.
The Samsung AMOLED 12M enables users to take perfect pictures quickly and easily, thanks to the Dedicated Camera Power Key which also provides a real digital camera-alike look and grip feeling. Samsung AMOLED 12M features fast image saving for next shot, so users can move to next shot within around 2 seconds. The phone also provides high quality video recording (1280 x 720) which offers 30 frames per second.
The phone provides the best photo quality by adopting innovative camera features. With Touch Auto-Focus (AF) tracking, users can simply select focus point with the touch of a finger, after which the AF function will automatically follow the object, keeping it in focus even as it moves across the screen. Moreover, Smart Auto feature allows users to capture the perfect images as the camera automatically changes the scene and mode based on its object, background and lighting. Images taken on the Samsung AMOLED 12M are worth showing off to friends and loved ones as they boast digital camera quality thanks to the phone camera's superb lens and Xenon flash.

Very cool, 800x480 OLED must look amazing!
I'd love to say it does but they haven't delivered my 40" OLED HDTV yet...
i can't help dreaming of this thing running Android :-)
why? what does COMPELLING feature android offer that this doesnt? I know google fanboys think the google sticker on the back of those shitty phones is a feature, but it isnt. neither are the crappy apps it has, nor is the stupid codenames for each update. "luolz cupcake guys@!"

Its ok to double-post by mistake sometimes but triple-post...
It needs Android or some other OS so 3rd party apps can be developed. Some possibly to take advantage of the camera, such as advanced photo blogging, Sat Nav etc. If there is to be competition against the iPhone, then versatile OS based devices need to be offered by the competition.
Why? iPhone doesn't offer a versatile OS to compete against products that do have very versatile OS'. Why would others have to? ;)
yes, yes. the phonecamera is indeed upon us
I might as well buy a powerful phone to use together with this phone camera...
i might as well carry a real digital camera instead of carrying this bulky phone.
hmm... 'ess you want THREE budges in your pants (two, if you're a lady), excluding your wallet.
I think the point is that this *is* a real digital camera. And a phone.
this is ridiculous...it has more megapixels than my nikon dslr.
Yes... with about 1/100th the image quality.
This is getting out of hand! The battery life would be terrible with all that. What's next, a DSLR/phone?? Lets be practical.
Micro four-thirds phonecameras here we come!!!
Coming next, DSLR phone.
With GPS navigation. Fix your DSLR on the dashboard to be guided home on 2.7 inch screen.
If it doesn't have a 3.5mm audio jack and a real OS, then it is a waste of time, no matter how great the camera. The former means less other gadgets to carry arround (such as a certain iDevice) and the latter will mean we can be rid of the annoying, pointless and very poorly implemented widgets that Samsung really do need to drop entirely.
Give this thing Android as some others have suggested and a 3.5mm jack (it may well have one!) and then some nice apps can be written to take advantage of the camera.
Its a phonecamera! What did you expect? 3.5mm? Android? Bleh, nobody needs it! Its a damn camera!!! xD
Gonna get meself one from my relations in Taiwan!
The phone is less thick then some 10 MP cameras. Beyond that as long as it fits in a average pair of jean pockets I don't see what the big deal is in the size department.
I would honestly rather have a decent camera with a phone that works then a phone with a decent camera.
On the flip side I'm pretty annoyed with the speed of my Omnia at times so....

Plant the seed of apple somewhere else, fanboi.
You want some phone with that camera?
Put in a real OS Windows Mobile 6.5, add the HTC TouchFLO user interface and I am sold. The current smartphones on the market all have crappy camera. This phone got a decent lens and sensor so it is very promising. And 720p video recording. That is a real bonus.
Windows Mobile 6.5 a "real" OS? WTF? Windows Mobile should be taken out back, shot in the head and thrown in the nearest dumpster. WinMo is the worst POS ever.
I'd take Windows Mobile over the godawful OS Verizon uses on their phones every day of the week.
What sensor are they using in this thing?
Amazing noone has commented on the hot korean chick. She's cute!

720p video sample
honestly who gives a damn if it doesnt have android and every other thing built into it, look at its specs for god sake, if you want gimmiky shit like that, get an iphone or something, this is a phone for actual practical use. god people just cant be satisfied these days
Should've had the girl on the main picture
Engadget, I really love the "Show Press Release" button/slideout thing you've added. You should do that with more stuff, like the complete story. I know you wouldn't get as many ad impressions, but it is so much more convenient to stay on one webpage than to click on the story, read it, click the back button, wait for the page to load again, and then wait for your browser to navigate down to the part of the page you were at before, which sometimes doesn't happen at all.
Are there any places where you aren't allowed to take a camera, but you can have a phone with you?
hope your listening Samsung, but the only reason your good phones like this arnt selling out is because you guys dont have a good OS that can compete with the iPhone and Windows mobile 6.5, that has 3rd party application. not only that, at least most phones needs a similar or the same program of installation to cuztomize your music easily. Plus have speacial application with phones like these that other phones cant have...
Does the girl come with the phone?
i think the phone comes with the girl :D lol
So any chance this would work on Sprint's CDMA network? Apparently I have someone who can get it shipped to me from Korea...
The benefits of having a Korean girlfriend, I suppose.
Is that a Samsung in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?
