Missed the Google Wave beta? We've got hands-on!
Google Wave started limited beta testing today, but chances are you'll miss out on an invite, since the 100,000 open slots will fill almost instantly. Not to worry, though -- our in-depth impressions of El Goog's innovative new IM/email/everything service are still right here if you want to get in deep. Will Wave change the world? Only one way to find out.

Damn I forgot all about this.....
Forgot about what?
Google what? What does this do exactly?
kills twitter, hopefully.
I have no idea what it does either. I just want twitter to die, and maybe this will do it somehow.
Death to twitter!
@something clever
you just made my day.
i haven't laughed that hard at anything recently.
but yes i heartily agree
DAMN, and im/email/everything was my idea, I was hoping no one thought of it until I could get out of college and make it :p
I hate twitter, but I'm not willing to sub it with a google product.
it sounds like it is meant to be a cross between AOL's online service (web based email and chat), facebook and perhaps twitter. which could be good. or really suck. we'll see when it's live
What makes that statement so ironic is that Goggle probably "tweeted" an annoucement of Google Wave.
Actually, they did - http://twitter.com/google
This is nice!! A lil confusion to the average user but wait till devs start getting their hands on this ... omg!!! interactive porn
I was under the impression that the invitations hadn't been sent out yet, as the dev team is based out of Sydney and it's only 5 AM there.

The twitter link is a wave developer's.
"Invites will go out late in the day US time on Sept 30 - we are in Sydney and want to be awake to support you all!" - Around 10:00 this morning.
My sweep of the web tells me that developers haven't even gotten access to the "public" version of Wave. They are still in the sandbox version as well. I think this post jumped the gun a little.
I also thought that, and the developers are still on the sandbox version not wave.google.com.
Right. The invites haven't been sent out yet.
I thought so, too - but Nilay seems to speak with confidence about the 100,000 invites going out already. If that was a mis-statement, I hope it gets corrected quickly.
Ya and that image is for Dev. I hope I get one of those 100k.
I'm in the dev program and no one has gotten them in there yet. We are talking about it on wave now. The reference to later today is what is being said consistantly around the waves.
it would be nice to find one of those invites in my inbox later today... but it doesn't seem likely =(
At least they try to reinvent the wheel. Others are only complaining ...
*wave to google*
Please stop with the El Goog / El Jobso, etc stuff. It's douchey. Like wearing sunglasses indoors. :)
and doing jagerbombs
I do jagerbombs while wearing sunglasses indoors.
I do jagerbombs while wearing sunglasses and tight Aerohollistitch polos and plaid golf shorts indoors.
and popping your collar
"since the 100,000 open slots were filled almost instantly"
This is a lie.
So painfully true. I don't even think that all of the sandbox users got their invites. This, however, is slightly encouraging: http://twitter.com/larsras/status/4523460907
If knowledge is power, then Google is God.
It's hard to look at this and not wonder what role it will play in the Chrome OS
What does this have to do with gadgets? I don't see Engadget mention much about Windows Live or Yahoo! or even AOL too much, unless it's about legal battles or whatever. Should this not belong on Download Squad?
AOL !?
Did you just indicate your surprise that you don't see more AOL coverage on engadget?
You just freaked me out.
For a second I was so confused I thought I was maybe having one of the flashbacks they promised me.
Looks like... a different UI to gmail , with photos... I seriously got no idea what purpose 80% of google products serve.
Google's products serve to classify, quantify, and categorize so as to better target ads to sell you stuff. At least until the day that you become so reliant on them that they can begin charging for services that were at one time offered for free.
it will be nice to hopefully see twitter die considering the media now considers a person's twitter messages to count as a credible source and that annoys the hell out of me... but to be honest, gmail is the only thing google i use, trying to stay away from them before they take over everything with their free services haha...
I wouldn't say I've been missing it, Bob.
Fill your random Office Space quotes quota for the day?

So what is Google NOT working on? They're everywhere lately!
Gaming.
I'm honestly surprised Google isn't providing its own internet access by now.
I recall the Conan O'Brian bit that said something like, "in the future You Tube, Twitter and Facebook will merge into one social networking conglomerate called YouTwitFace".
I also read an article in Wired that was talking about Google having an ace up it's sleeve to compete directly with Facebook and Twitter for that matter. It seems the cards have been laid down.
Google wave looks like it will in some ways compete but it can also work along side both Facebook and Twitter. Good plan I think. Get everyone used to using Wave in tandem with their current social networking service, then people will slowly begin to realize that it is easier to use just Wave.
No invite for Voice.....check
No invite for Wave.....check
Fuck you Google. I literally NEED these tools. Assholes.
Google Voice invites generally go out a few days to a week after you sign up. If you haven't gotten one by now, well...
?
O_o this is great!
