Screen Grabs: Dell's Adamo keeps patient company on House
Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.
Heads-up, folks: fall TV is in full swing, and the newest season of House M.D. has already delivered on more than one front. Aside from convincing you that a hospital really is no place to spend the majority of your day, Hugh Laurie's money maker is also subtly whispering to you that a Dell Adamo would suit you just fine. The super sleek ultraportable managed to show its face on this week's episode, and for any of you out there who doubt a glossy screen's ability to double as a mirror, we'd say this primetime showing proves otherwise. Are matte panels not covered under Medicare, or what?
[Thanks, Steven]

I love gadgets on tv shows it's like that dude on trueblood holding the iphone upside down.
That guy in that episode is making a super bad virtual reality video game too..
A cheetah, monkey, and lizard all team up with guns to shoot bats + pterodactyls.
I guess it actually sounds cool now that I've typed it out :/
Yeah that actually does sound pretty awesome.
In the show it was bad tho :(
I think that's the case with most games though. It sounded cool on paper...
I think we're missing the point that the name of the episode was "epic fail"
Still I found that they had put a great effort into making it. Models were fairly detailed, textures could've been better though. Also lighting was good and I found the movements of especially the monkey really good. For a one time use they had spent an awfull lot of time and energy in the shots.
@drumwiz86
I could have sworn the "epic fail" part wasn't referring to the game, but the fact that House solved the case instead of Foreman.
yeah, from a gamer's perspective, it was cheesy as hell, cause we know there is no way in hell the in-game characters' mouths would sync up with the players' voices that well... but it was very polished and well produced for a 3D segment on a TV show.
Friggin House rules. I love that show.
True geek have no time for tv drama.
first!
FAIL!!!!!!!
FAIL!!!!
Super sleep? :P
i supposed he can use the screen as a mirror so he dont have to go to the restroom or have the nurse bring him that pee bottle.
Because using the screen as a mirror stops you needing a piss? o_O
@va jj
This guy just seems to get everything wrong. Stop posting on engadget.
I knew it!
What is this "super sleep" you speak of and how may I attain it?
I hope they didn't pay for that. The reflection on that screen looks terrible.
It looks similar to my roommates Macbook Pro...
"I looked it up and it says here that it's lupus!"
It's not lupus.
It's never lupus.
Except that one time it actually was lupus, but we don't speak of that.
Matte might be harder to keep germ-free, or maybe it started as matte but after cleaning it with alcohol and bleech it became gloss.
They really threw around the tech jargon in that house. Web 2.0, crowdsourcing, etc
Not to mention the episode's name was "Epic Fail"
Not to mention the guy from the video game company was a massive douche. Very realistic.
BTW. Crowd-sourcing nerds for Medical Advice:....
wait for it...
Epic Fail!
Epic Fail
When did hositals start allowing WiFi access. Thought it would interfere with the equipment?
The Dell looks hot IMO.
In that episode the patient complained that his hands felt like they were on fire. Case solved - He was holding the damn computer.
Also, the video game portion in the beginning of the episode was pretty neat. Would have loved to play a virtual reality game like that :)
All the hospitals in the Duke system have free WiFi access. I would assume that the UNC hospitals do, as well, but can't speak from personal experience.
Yeah....But the guy was a dick. :\
If you have ever been sick and in a hospital you really feel for this guy.An educated patient is best able to discuss issues and treatments with doctors. If the doctors cannot handle this then time for a better doctor. Of copurse a non doctor goes down blind alleys, but the ability to discuss indepth about your treatment is a great comfort factor.
As a patient you should not have to blindly put your life into the hands of people who refuse to discuss ALL your issues. After all you are the one who will live, or maybe die, if treated with the wrong meds and procedures.
Medicine is not all science and not all linear. It's good that the producers and writers handled such issues.
"If you have ever been sick and in a hospital you really feel for this guy."
Good point. Its a good place to be when you're sick. In a hospital...
"An educated patient is best able to discuss issues and treatments with doctors."
Ha, what? You mean the doctors who are all educated, discuss the problem with the patient. Who is not educated. In other words, didn't go to medical school. Yeah that Certificate in Game Design is nice and all but... get real.
" If the doctors cannot handle this then time for a better doctor."
Yeah, in the show the Doctor basically told him, ' if you're gonna be difficult, get out of here, dweeb'

There's a difference between discussing with the patient (which every doctor on Earth does) and having the patient participate in the Diagnosis process (which is relegated, in reality-land, to questions about their recent diet, sexual history, medications, trips, etc) Leave the interpretation up to the guys who studied this stuff in, like, school, dude.
"Medicine is not all science and not all linear. It's good that the producers and writers handled such issues."
You're right, its Science + ..... Twitter?
I think you'll find that House was the one who correctly suggested the cure for his sickness (as usual).
That's not a crowd. That's a friggin' genius who's a Doctor.
If I want to ask about Hentai Porn, I'll ask the Interwebs.
Glassy... no thanks.
whatever, i like glossy screens. matte screens look fuzzy to me.
Dealing with dell customer service must have made him sick.
Just been called a "saddo" and a geek by spotting Adamo on House... aaahhh girls, they, don't understand :)
I was wondering what that laptop the guy was using was.
A pretty poor second episode of the season, however. :/
This was pretty crappy product placement, to be honest. I watched the episode on Monday and got annoyed with how he was using his laptop (it's something that has been done in every medical show of late. Especially Scrubs which has done it three or four times now) but never once did I notice a Dell logo on it. I actually just figured it was a Blackbook since that is the most common black laptop to use on screen nowadays.
But his laptop use was integral to the plot.
There's been a lot of "switching sides" this year in TVDom...
A good example is the series "Psych" on the USA Network. The character Sean traditionally used an Apple in earlier seasons. This season, the character Gus made a big deal about getting new laptops (actually weaving it into the storyline). When we next see Gus, he has a Dell laptop with a bigass circular Windows logo on it. I wonder how much it cost for THAT product placement?
I see a lot of product placement for sprint in shows lately, bit disappointing how obvious it gets too.
And less apple and dell logo's on the back of every laptop and monitor, I guess they aren't cool and/or paying anymore.
