Taser International's six-shot Shockwave demonstration

If you're looking to incapacitate with electricity, Taser International is your go-to source. And while single-shot (or even triple shot) weapons have their place, what do you do when faced with a whole crowd of no-goodniks? For instance, take that Travis County, Texas constable who zapped a 72 year old woman this spring (she dared him, remember). What if he was confronted by a whole van full of Ragin' Grannies? That, dear readers, is what Shockwave is for. Each module holds six Tazers seated in a twenty-degree arc, and multiple units can either be stacked horizontally or daisy chained for simultaneous deployment. The unit is activated by a push-button control box that allows the operator to stand up to 100 meters away, and the maximum range is 25 feet. Never before has electrocution been this easy. Video after the break.

What happens when they all impact on one fat guy standing too close? Does he explode?
it actually would stimulate his muscles in such a way that he'd lose weight...and then it would kill him.
Yes and in that case Timmy, umm... timerider, you'd have to shield yourself from all the fat that'll be spewed out in a one block radius.
"here, let me demonstrate on Ed..."
That thing is shocking!
Are you proud of that comment?
if you think advertising a weapon as nonlethal even though tasers often do kill people, then ya this is very cool. Good job Engadget keep it up, when do I get to see other new and innovative weapons from the arms industry.
They aren't non-lethal!! They're less-lethal!
@barry99705
These are NON-lethal because of how they are designed and manufactured. They are designed SPECIFICALLY not to cause death. As mentioned before by other commenters, there will be accidental death by usage of the device but that doesnt classify it as lethal or less-lethal. Cars are not lethal, BB guns are not lethal however if they are utilized in a wrong manner or by accient they can be lethal. Ford(car) nor Hudson(airsoft) design and build their products to kill.
Like chokeholds you mean...
Tasers "often" kill people who are circling the drain anyway due to undiagnosed heart arrhythmia. I leave the occasional fatal head trauma due to falling where it belongs in the "Act of God" category.
The continual invention and utilization of devices like these is starting to severely piss me off.
I, for one, would love to see this made portable. Imagine, 6 rows formed into a shield. How badass would that be?
I still think the shock web on Sanctuary episode Instinct was cooler. Henry Foss gets all the cool gadgets!
Wow its like a claymore mine full of electricity, rainbows and unicorns...
..... as in the electricity will make you see rainbows just before it feels like a unicorn nailed you in the ass....
Ummm I'll pass.....
Like they used on the harmless G20 protesters? Randomly spraying and tasering them... I feel this device is senseless, but I guess its better than being shot with a real gun =/
What's next? Overpowered tesla coils to guard restricted areas?
The tesla coil in itself would be a great working deterrant. would you walk close to a fence of randomly firing sparks of plasma in the air? I think not Mr. Man.

this video is electrifying
Errrrmmmm, the eye balls of short or crouched people + this = POP !!!
Shocking...
Its so annoying how they keep making these things and no one takes the potential for abuse seriously. Right now, for a cop to beat or shoot someone, its a big deal, and it leaves marks. With tasers and all these "safe" pain weapons, they can just use them as much as they want with no real repcrussion...since no one takes it seriously. I hate these things.
I hope when they start deploying them as riot barriers protesters just flip or knock them over.
Well, sooner or later someone takes a shotgun to one of those cops, perhaps then some lesson will be learned.
With each innovation in Taser's stun gun, comes ways to combat misuse. These newer guns come with electronic monitoring that records everytime a shot is fired. and the newer ones are coming with cameras mounted under the muzzle so that it can take a picture the instant the trigger is pulled so that way HQ can verify that your usage was deemed neccesary.
@Nghthawk
"so that way HQ can verify that your usage was deemed neccesary."
and if it's not delete the footage.
Dear America Good Luck with all your future achievements... seriously
They have countless videos on youtube and so forth where you can see cops misuse it and every case I know of the cop wasn't even talked to because it was always up to him to determine if it was 'deemed necessary' and all that will happen with those pictures is that the maniacs will jerk off to them when they see people cringe, hopefully not while on duty...
F117, the video is an option on the taser. Many departments choose not to purchase that option, mostly for cost reasons.
Matt, yes they can be deleted. If your department has a policy of using the video feature and your video is deleted, you have some explaining to do.
Wwhat, youtube is full of videos that are taken out of context so they can get reactions. Congratulations, you fell for it. Btw: some abuses do occur, but most of the youtube videos are not part of that group.
I get the sense that the effective range of this device is "don't stick your finger in here!" So unless it comes with a double dog dare,
I'm not seeing the denial part going on here - let alone any actual area. 5 grand seems kinda pricy for the high tech equivalent of a light socket sans bulb.
Worse, it seems to have a light show stoners might congregate to enjoy - just add a trippy sound track.
Tell me that for 5 grand it's more than a low performing bug zapper you can get for 50$ at a hardware store.
Innovation in the field of civilian control devices. Very nice!
So what is the right course of action for the police? Can you imagine being a cop these days? You cannot shoot someone because that leads to death, you cannot use your stick because it may kill someone or bruise them, you cannot use pepper spray because it may travel down wind and effect a bystandard and now they shouldnt use a taser because it could possibly kill someone. I guess they should just hug it out then? Maybe sing a song and do a jig? Oh wait, thats right. Cops are below civlians. Who cares if they get hurt or killed because the crank head is jacked up on PCP and threating to stab them. Yes their are bad cops, just like every other profession. But to castrate all cops because of a feel idiots is just stupid. I guess you guys take it upon yourself when your home gets broken into all of the crap you have worked so hard to collect gets stolen.
Hate to break it to you but the world is not rainbows and sunshine. I wish it where but the sad reality is that their are horrible sick people in this world and anyone who willing goes out their to face these folks should have all the options avaiable to them.
and in related news, with this article, Dick Cheney has become an engadget reader.
Firearms kill if you aim at vital spots. Aim below the knees, many takedowns, few deaths.
Tasers rarely kill large, healthy adults - in fact, if the particular adult happens to be on stimulants, sometimes they just piss them off. They kill the elderly, the infirm, small children, people with heart conditions or a long list of other medical problems.
Tasers are INTENDED to intimidate legal but unruly protesters with the threat of random death for trivial incidents, and the Bush administration went wild using them this way. Maybe we will try to use them differently, but the best way to do that is to simply use a better tool.
