Gotta hand it to LG, it pulled out the big hitting hyperbole with the launch of its otherwise simplistic GD510 touchscreen phone. LG begins with a reminder that it launched "the world's first full touchscreen phone" -- the Prada -- back in January 2007. A claim that Ericsson, Nokia, and others would rightfully dispute. LG then calls the brushed-aluminum GD510, or "Pop," the "most compact 3-inch full touchscreen phone ever made," while boasting of its simplicity. That latter claim is achieved by removing "unnecessary features" that apparently include burdensome WiFi and 3G radios since modern consumers want to browse the internet over GPRS/EDGE. Spec-wise, you get a WQVGA (note the "Q") display, 3 megapixel camera, 8GB of internal memory, and a single home key that glows green to call or red to hang-up / cancel. They've also ditched the
S-Class UI in favor of something that's presumably less convoluted. There's even an optional solar-panel battery cover which we hear is the number one requested feature on touchscreen phones... right. It does look pretty though, which is saying a lot for a phone packing a solar panel. Hitting Europe in mid October and the US at the end of October if the Bluetooth SIG entry is to be believed. Video promo after the break.

now that's actually a decent design, listening HP?
I would never use it, but not everyone wants nor need a full featured smartphone.
I'm quite intrigued by the long, long new choccolate smartphone; I know nothing about it but I like its form factor and looks.
I'll be looking at it closely.
Lack of wi-fi is not really a problem as there are hardly any free hotspots outside of London anyway here in the UK. However lack of 3G is a little stupid, although it may well mean the battery life is better than most other touch screen phones, which to some people is more important than speedy mobile internet.
"there are hardly any free hotspots outside of London anyway here in the UK."
Are you just stupid or ignorant?
/coat.
Very mature, your parents must be very proud.....
No I am neither stupid or ignorant. I am merely stating that although when I have been in London I have come across many free hotspots at all sorts of places from small cafes and pubs to public areas, I have not come across even a fraction of that anywhere else in the country. Every pub that has wifi around my area charges for it and I have searched for free hotspots all over and found very few. That is not to say there are non but they are far more rare than in London.
Insulting people without backing up your view is not clever and not cool.
Wow, I want a phone with a 4.8mm bezel!
But kudos, the solar panel rear cover is pretty cool. Seeing as how it's an LG phone, we'll see if the software is anywhere close to be usable :)
>> "a single home key that glows green to call or red to hang up"
They hate buttons as much as Apple...
should be more buttons on front bezel. on another note, meh
"removing "unnecessary features" that apparently include burdensome WiFi and 3G radios since modern consumers want to browse the internet over GPRS/EDGE." Lol... Design is nice, but i'm not an Apple person, i need more functionality.
Sorry, but i'm not a minimalist when it comes to technology so FAIL.
I'm don't know about the phone itself, but I'm liking the ideas its bringing to the table.
I love the solar panel! No 3G I'm ok with. But no WiFi? I would really like to see that, so at least so there is some possibility of speedy internet.
These companies gotta realize that software is becoming the biggest selling point, it seems to be neglected when its introduced.
Good work though LG, its a start.
It's the cookie's UI.
STAY AWAY!!!!!
He means the KP500/KP501 cookie. The interface is slow and unresponsive. As an owner of the cookie, I can tell you, this interface is terrible.
cookies? (arnold schwarzenegger in twins)
How big of a difference is those 1 or 2 millimeters they shaved off by excluding 3G and WiFi? Does anyone really think "you know, if that phone was just a millimeter thinner and lacked common features, I would buy it in a heartbeat!".
Meh.
LG seems to always pack a light punch.
with minimal functions and that solar panel at the back, this phone sure gonna last long on one charge
Is this a KIRF iFone?
Since when is having more features like 3G and WIFI "burdensome", unless you're referring to battery life? What a joke. I own an LG Vu, and I will never buy an LG touchscreen again.
I said that when I bought a Cookie.
Then the cookie broke and I swore never to buy LG again.
..
Then I bought an LG Viewty.
..
*sigh*
Sucker for Cameraphones..
I already know i'll put that shit in the sun and it will melt. then verizon will charge me 50$ to replace it!
Is it engadget? Or me? Or do we really get presented with 14 new phones every day of the year?
I can't keep track at all of what's what, but I do like the LG designs in general though.
I love my LG POP. It's the best phone I've had. It's light, stylish, cheap and has everything on a phone that i want.
I'd love to no how to get msn on it though.... let me no if you can. :]
